The Tiffen Series 9 Warm Soft/FX 4 Filter diffuses strong light entering the lens and produces a glowing effect. While the resulting image appears softer and ethereal, there is little loss of clarity or detail. This filter works by diffusing the light entering the lens with small aberrations; by spreading the light more evenly, a soft glow is created rather than the sharp, well-defined image when shooting without a filter. This filter has a 4 density, providing a noticeable amount of softening.

This filter also combines the diffusion effect with an 812 warming filter for providing a general warmth to the image and for improving skin tones. This warming effect also helps to reduce blue sensitivity and for cutting through overly cool tones within the scene.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings. This filter is compatible with Series 9 filter holders.

Diffuser filter provides an ethereal quality to photographs, resulting in a dream-like atmosphere.

Soft image quality does not detract from the overall detail of the image.

Light entering the lens is diffused by small aberrations, creating a soft glow rather than the sharp, well-defined image when shooting without a filter.

Warming filter helps to reduce bluish casts and provide more balanced skin tones.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. In general, as far as quality goes, how do the Premier cables compare to Mogami?

A: The Warm Audio Premier is comparable with the Mogami Gold as an option for a high-quality audio cable for use in stage or studio applications. Both cables use high-quality quad-conductor construction and gold-plated connectors. The Warm Audio cable uses a braided shield while the Mogami Gold uses a spiral shield which are both effective designs to prevent Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) and Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI) from affecting the signal.

Q: 2. Are these a good solution for using with Rokinon cine lens (which don’t have a filter thread to screw anything into)? Trying to work out how I use fixed ND and polarizer filters with the Rokinons without a matte box (when using on a gimbal).

A: It entirely depends on the Rokinon lens you are speaking of. Virtually all the Rokinon cine lenses take filters (on exception would be the 14mm) whereas the Rokinon Xeens cannot and you would most likely use this: NiSi 114mm Shatter-Proof Protector Filter B&H # NIR114EXP Generally on a gimbal, a matte box is not used and only one maybe two screw on filters would be considered for obvious size and weight issues. In order that we may further assist you, please write telling us in more detail of what you wish to do. sales@bhphoto.com.

Q: 3. I'm ready to sell this filter because on my camcorder......Panasonic AG-AC90 it makes everything kind of reddish...Like the trees....and even the sky is kind of weird.Any advice?I'm doing something wrong or what? Thanks

A: The Tiffen XLE Advantix filter is designed for shooting extreme long exposures with still cameras to capture motion (waterfalls, streams, clouds, etc). This filter is not designed for video cameras. Here is the Tiffen product description:The Tiffen XLE Series ADVANTIX filter is designed to be used on DSLR cameras in B&W or Color mode, plus APS-C sensors in these modes when used in combination with lenses approved for IR photography. Designed to take extreme long exposure photographs in manual set up, the ADVANTIX filter will allow you to blur any movement in your image. The intensity of this effect is achieved through adjustments in manual mode of aperture, shutter and ISO settings. Designed to remove the near IR polluting light waves, the ADVANTIX removes these polluting light waves by introducing an active absorbing element. This element adds a slight greenish color cast to the filter, which can be adjusted for, either in your cameras white balance settings or in your post software afterwards. If shooting stills, the reddish cast in your image can be fixed by adjusting the still cameras white balance or in post with Lightroom. Q: 4. does it create a X in the final photo like some of the variable nd filters?

A: I have not encounter any X with this filter, love it for long exposure pictures. I only saw X on variable nd filters so far. I hope this helps.

Q: 5. Can we use z cokin filter on Lee holder?

A: Sorry that I can not help but I use the Cokin filter holderPeter

Q: 6. How does the cokin filter holder attach to the camera lens?

A: The Cokin filter screws on to the front of the lens like a normal filter. When buying id recommend knowing your lenses diameter.

Q: 7. Hi, is it possible to buy 2 of these, and screw on 1 or 2 more filter holders to a single unit? I'd like to be able to use up to 3 or 4 filters at once, and see they have a small screws on the front which seems if you remove would let you add more holders.

A: I see no way to do this with the Tiffen holder. However, Lee makes A 2x foundation kit with tandem adapter that looks like it solves the problem. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/352443-REG/Sigma_F309306_EM_140_DG_Macro_Ring.html

Q: 8. Can I use a 4 x 4 filter with this?

A: The Tiffen Pro 100 is designed to accomodate 100mm Tiffen filters (4mm thick), which are 4x4 or 4x5.65.

Q: 9. Hi, does the 43mm diameter filter also have a front thread?

A: Yes, this filter has a 43mm front thread if you wish to stack filters.

Q: 10. Does the filter holder rotate like the Lee system?

A: Yes, the Cokin Z-Pro holder rotates.
