Love this new lens. I've so far only used it on a tripod for sports photography (and auto-focus is unbelievable when coupled with the Sony A6700), but I plan to use it for low-light nature photography soon, as well as hand-held captures of the kids. I'm expecting the new G2 image stabilization to really impress.

Pros:
1. Super compact. It allows me to shoot cityscape at night, 1/30s hand-held, successful 90% of the time!
2. Great sharpness enough for my A7RIII.
3. Good bokeh if you don't always need to zoom in to 100%. Round point light bokeh across the frame at F/4.

Cons: onion rings bokeh visible if you zoom in to 100%, and a lot of lemon-shape bokeh at F/2.8. So I always shoot portraits at F/4.

Overall a perfect lens. I would rather not go for the super heavy and expensive GM.

I was back and forth between ordering this and other standard telephoto offerings for SONY E Mount. Based on some reviews on YouTube and the more compact form-factor, I decided to go with the 70-180 and I couldn't be more happy with it! The auto-focus is shockingly excellent on my Sony a7c - anecdotally, it feels as quick and sticky as my SONY 35mm GM. I love that it's small enough to travel comfortably in my small sling (Peak Design Everyday 5L) and can be added to a carry without any real weight consideration. The image rendering is lovely and the close up performance is very impressive which has made it more versatile than I'd expected. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

We originally bought this lens to use with a Sony A74 for portrait shots and video. We like the image it produces and the versatility of the zoom to change focal lengths on the fly. Tamron makes a quality product, comparable with those at a higher price point (which we own). We have since then purchased two additional lenses for use with Sony FX6 cameras use for live production in a house of worship.

I am 100% happy with this lens so far.
I tried out several telephoto zooms in the B&H showroom and thought the 70-180 G2 was the best mix of features, quality and cost. (I did not try the Sony 70-200 GM ii.)

Positives:
In the field, it handles well, focuses quickly, is light and compact to carry.
Image quality is excellent with the Sony A7RIV-- you can count the dog's eyelashes in the photo shot from six feet and you can count every brick in the factory wall from a quarter-mile away.
I have not used image stabilization often but it appears to work very well.
I do not see much deterioration in image quality at the edges and corners.

Negatives:
I do see some vignetting and rectilinear distortion in RAW images, but not a lot, and nothing that the processing software can't clear right up.
The lens has struggled a bit to focus in dim low-contrast scenes; I don't think it has more trouble than other lenses do in similar situations.
The lens extends when zooming; ideally I would like an internal zoom mechanism, but not at the likely cost in money, weight and length.
Focus mode and image stabilization are controlled through the camera menu, which I don't mind but some photographers may consider a drawback.

This will be my second version of this lens, I have the Nikon branded one also. This lens competes against the manufacturers 70-200 f2.8 and it does extremely well, smaller and lighter is a big advantage and has greater significance than the extra 20mm reach and tele-converter use, when I need those I rent the equipment. I don't notice the optical stabilization is as significant as I was hoping but the bodies with ibis make this almost insignificant.
