The Shure SM81-LC is a cardioid condenser microphone used in live sound, broadcast, and recording scenarios. It features a flat-frequency response between 20 Hz and 20 kHz and provides a switchable low-pass filter that can be set to either 6 dB/octave or 18 dB/octave.

Other features, such as a lockable -10 dB pad and SPL handling of 146 dB (with the pad on), make the microphone well suited for a variety of situations.

This mic sports a cardioid polar pattern that helps it achieve a high level of gain before inducing feedback, ensuring the mic will work well on the stage. This polar pattern also sports excellent off-axis rejection, helping to retain isolation in live and studio recordings.

The SM81-LC offers the kind of durability one would expect from Shure as well as low susceptibility to RF issues in the field. Its steel construction ensures the mic can be used in a variety of conditions, though phantom power is required to operate the SM81-LC.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. may be dumb question but will this stand on a desk without falling over or does it need mounted?

A: The desktop stand in this product should hold up the mic properly without falling.

Q: 2. can this mic be mounted using a shure mic clip and a stand?

A: Not at all. it is designed to mount to a podium or a conference table.

Q: 3. Can the mic hang upside down with the shock mount?

A: Yes, it could hang upside down.

Q: 4. what cable to use with SM81-LC?

A: xlr3 cable! like any mic..

Q: 5. which Mic is better for talk, the shure beta87a or the shure Beta58A?

A: This is very dependent on the person who will be using it and also the area you will be using it in. Female vocals will sound very different than male vocals. Regardless on the frequency response alone, the Beta87a being a condenser it will give you much more clarity and more definition for speech. where the Beta58a will give you a more well rounded sound and will be better in louder environments. It very much depends on who and where you will be using these microphones.

Q: 6. I need to practically swallow the 831cW for it to pick up my voice. Is there a omni-directional mic that would work better? What am I doing wrong here?

A: We have not had that issue with our mic , it was purchased as an upgrade from the mic that came with our wireless unit. It was a big improvement . It has always been clipped on tie not the lapel. Cables are very sensitive on all units we have used so don't wrap them. A lot depends on receiver position & how much power you have for system.

Q: 7. can it be used with a standard 3.5 mic plug, or if it connect to an XLR can it be used with an adapter for input to a Camcorder or DSLR camera?

A: I'm using an XLR to Mini Jack cable (B&H# COCMMXF10), and I can plug it into a DSLR

Q: 8. Does this mic need power? I would like to use it with a sennheiser xswd which would require me soldering a trs tip but the sennheiser does not put out power as far as I know

A: The Audio-Technica AT831cW - Mini Cardioid Condenser Mic requires an unspecific amount of power from its connection to the AT UniPak transmitter or similar.

Q: 9. What is the best mic stand adaptor / gooseneck adaptor combination for mounting this mic or a similar gooseneck mic on a stand? The mic will be used for a church cantor and announcements. Plus, sometimes a small choir will sing around this mic. Maybe we should use a small body condenser that comes with a stand adaptor. Ideas?

A: This mic may be mounted to a desk/table stand or to a permanent flange-type mount typically used on a podium: Shure - Centraverse Desktop Base (Black) - B&H# SHCVDB ----------- Shure - A400SM - Recessed Shock Mount for Gooseneck Mics - B&H# SHA400SM

Q: 10. How do I connect this mic to a laptop?

A: You would need to use a USB audio interface that has phantom power, like the Polsen XLR-USB-48 XLR to USB Audio Interface for example.

Used for live sound with Allen & Heath WZ4 and QSC 16 kW system. Clear and crisp, very controlable especially going into low note vocals. This is a new purchase. Will have to see how it performs a few more times.

I’m not a career sound person. I do videography part-time (nights/weekends). My points of reference are built-in camera mics; DLSR add-ons like Rode’s Pro (short shotgun) & Stereo Pro; and built-in mics on portable recorders, like Zoom H5 & H1.

Compared to those, my Shure PGA81-XLR’s have been a step up. The balanced line XLR cables pick up less ambient RF noise, giving me less audio clean-up work in post, and better audio results for the clean-up that I still do. And the cardiod pick-up pattern helps reduce audience noise, and phase interference between mics used in xy pairs for stereo.

These are built like little tanks. I’ve had them 2 years, and use them every shoot. Seem indestructible.

They list at 40-20,000 Hz (I guess all the dogs & toddlers listening to my videos appreciate the 10k+ end; I can’t hear it). Since these have no built-in low-cut (a.k.a. high-pass), I use them in shock cages on mic stands and don’t handle them during recording. This works very well. (Tip: in floor-pounding environments like theater, I like to put the mic stands atop a hand-cut circle of Damplifier automobile sound dampening foam.)

I’m not qualified to comment on the ear-love from these: how “warm” or “sizzly” or “present” or they are (“with hints of oak, hominy, and spent transmission fluid”). But I am very fussy about sound, and these have been my go-to mics for best capture. I’ve used them for 50-piece orchestra projects; the conductor said the recording “brought tears to his eyes.” (Yeah, yeah, I know: happy tears!)

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them, at least for anyone like me, looking to up their audio game from the non-XLR realm. But if your first use is run-and-gun video, then consider instead something like the Audio-Technica AT2022 or AT875R, since both are designed for DSLR-mounting. The 2022 is for low background noise settings and where stereo is important. The 875R is for high ambient/competing noise settings and where monaural sound is no big sacrifice.

After doing much research I settled on buying 2 of these. I had done some previous recording with 2 SM57's, but the SM81's have a flatter sound. I have only used these to record trumpet, but they sound is great and handles the loud sound and quick response very well. I also bought a Fathead Cascade to put right at my bell, and I personally like that sound better when I'm running only one mic. The 81's are going to sound great in the hall though. I do wish that they made one box for two mics.

I was looking for an SM-81 to record acoustic guitars anyway - it was recommended to me by a friend who teaches recording engineering - and I thought the bundle was too good to pass up. It did not disappoint. The SM-81 is clearly legendary for a reason. I've now made multiple recordings with it, with several different guitars, and the tracks sit perfectly in the mix with no additional EQ and no fuss. Today I tracked a vocal with it and was stunned by how well it captured my voice. Very very impressed with this mic and I'm not sorry I sprung for the extras.

Purchased two SM81-LC - Cardioid Condenser Mic by Shure to use for drum overheads. The bomb! These mics do not color the sound. What you hear when you play is what you will hear out of the mixer. Fantastic mics. I don't have any other instrument condensers to compare them to, and I will never need to. It couldn't get any better than this. I'm using recorderman setup with two additional mics on bass drum and bottom of snare. This is perfect for recording drums. Sounds fantastic on conga too!

This mic was recommended to me by a saxophone buddy who used this for both live performance and recording. This has served me well in both capacities and I was able to move around during the performance and play comfortably!

I bought a pair of these to mic my C7 and classical guitar. Although I am still experimenting with various placements, all placements that I have tried have produced excellent results. Seems to be flat and accurate.
