Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is it compatible with macOS Monterey to back up time machine?

A: Yes. The SanDisk 2TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 is compatible with Mac OS.

Q: 2. I have this 2tb Pro SSD with the (theoretical) 2GB/s speed. I've run TechTool's speed test on this drive when plugged into a brand new 14" MacBook Pro. As others have stated, I'm only seeing about 1GB/s (half speed). I've tried the included USB cable, as well as a Thunderbolt 4 cable. I guess there's no way to get full speed from this SSD on even the newest Macs. Any suggestions on how to do it?

A: The SanDisk 2TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2, (B&H # SAE812TB), requires a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C connection which Apple computers do not support. It is not possible to reach these speeds with a Mac, at best it will reach 1GB/s which is what you are reaching now so the drive is working as it should. If you want to reach higher speeds with an external SSD, you would need to look into a Thunderbolt 3/4 SSD like the SanDisk Professional 2TB PRO-G40 SSD Thunderbolt 3 Portable SSD, (B&H # SAS312TB).

Q: 3. Can anyone weigh in on real-world sustained read and write speeds? Anyone experience heat throttling? Considering the Pro V2 or T5 for mobile video editing of ProRes RAW files.

A: The SanDisk 4TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 is Up to 2000 MB/s Read & Write Speeds. The Samsung T5 is Up to 540 MB/s Data Transfer Rate. If you are concerned about speed, the SanDisk 4TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 would be the right one for you.

Q: 4. Does this work with the ipad mini 6 ?

A: Yes, the Sandisk Extreme Pro drive can work with an iPad Mini 6th gen.

Q: 5. If I pair this with a MacStudio for storing my RAW files for editing in Lightroom will I be happy with the speed?

A: The SanDisk 4TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 has up to 2000MB/s speed.

Q: 6. Does anybody achieve the advertised read/write speed on the new 14-16" MacBook Pros???

A: The SanDisk 4TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 is Up to 2000MB/s read and write speeds. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors

Q: 7. Does this drive need to be reformatted to work well with Photoshop on a Mac book Pro?

A: No, this SanDisk 2TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 does not need to be reformatted to work well with Photoshop on a Mac book Pro.

Q: 8. Can I connect this to my laptop Thunderbolt 3 port? Is so, which cable should I use, and what speed should I expect?

A: Yes, Thunderbolt3 is backwards compatible with USB-C speeds and will be able to connect in the TB3 port. You should get USB 3.2 transfer speeds.

Q: 9. Is this correct - basically 2000 vs 200 read speeds? I'm comparing drives to edit 4k video. "Up to 2000 MB/s Read & Write Speeds"? I'm considering the SanDisk Professional 4TB G-DRIVE PRO External HDD (Thunderbolt 3 / USB 3.2 Gen1, Space Gray) that says "Read Speeds up to 200 MB/s".

A: For this Sandisk 2TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2, the read speeds are indeed up to 2000 MB/s. Although that is a maximum speed for sequential data, the read speeds are always going to be much faster than a hard disk drive.

Q: 10. Can this SanDisk Extreme Pro work initially with a PC, and then work with an iMac when the PC is replaced? Would I lose all my files if I had to reformat it for IOS? What would work best for this goal of backing up files from PC and using them again in the future with a Mac? Thank you for help.

A: Yes, the SanDisk 2TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 can be used initially with a PC. To ensure cross compatibility I would reformat the SanDisk 2TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 to ex-Fat. Anytime you have to reformat the drive you would lose any data that is not backed up to a second source.

I bought this drive to supplement the non upgradable 500Gb internal ssd on my wife’s IMac. It’s been in place for about a month now and is working great. The drive has Thunderbolt connectivity so it’s as fast or faster than the internal ssd. And it’s quiet (no moving parts). Time Machine backup works fine on it as well as the internal ssd so no issues there. All in all a good fit for additional storage.

I have been using G Tech drives for editing in Final Cut for 17 years because my instructor told me they work best with Macs (compared to La Cies, etc.) With San Disk's recent purchase of G Tech, I tried one of these. Although it get quite hot - simply as a result of being mounted to the desktop without actually being used by an app - I like the speed and portability, including being able to edit using only the battery of my Mac Book Pro during a thunderstorm! (I place mine in a plastic bag surrounded by cold pack from the freezer for sustained video editing.). While rotating HDs are not nearly as susceptible to the over-heating issue I truly like the high speed rendering capability of an SSD. Development of these portable SSDs seems to have plateaued at the 4TB capacity....

This SSD takes full advantage of Thunderbolt 3. I use it with my MacBook Pro. I know that it should not be as fast as the internal SSD, but I have not seen any noticeable delays while using it as the main location for certain data. Significantly outperforms any SSD that uses a USB interface.

Overall, I am quite pleased with this SSD. The Thunderbolt 3 is very fast and seems to work better on the Mac Sonoma than the Extreme Pro that I now use as a mirror drive to this one. Price is not that much different, so this is a worthwhile upgrade. It is bigger than the Extreme Pro, however. Please note that if you are on Mac Sonoma, you are likely better off re-formatting the drive with APFS regardless; I had a lot of issues not doing that with the Extreme Pro, and it seems to have gone away after reformatting it.

In switching to a new Apple computer with a processor 3x's faster than my old one, I couldn't afford an upgrade to the 4TB internal drive and instead went with the SanDisk PRO-G40. After running several Disk Speed Tests this is almost as fast as an internal Apple SSD and it cost less than half. Shipping as always from B&H was super fast and I couldn't be more pleased with this SSD.
