Optimized for close-up shooting, the Sony E-mount 150mm f/2.8 Macro Dragonfly Lens from IRIX is a sharp telephoto prime featuring a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification and a 1.1' minimum focusing distance for photographing nearby subjects. A bright f/2.8 maximum aperture enables working in a variety of lighting conditions and also offers greater control over depth of field for isolating subject matter. The 12 element, nine group optical design features a Neutrino coating, which helps to suppress lens flare and ghosting in order to achieve higher contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the optical assets is a robust physical construction, dubbed Dragonfly, which incorporates extensive weather sealing to guard against dust and moisture. This manual focus lens also features printed focus distance and depth of field scales to benefit fast and accurate focusing, and a rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth bokeh quality. Additionally, the included tripod collar has an Arca-type compatible foot for seamless compatibility with a variety of tripod heads.

Q: 9. how does this lens compare to the Sigma 150 2.8 macro os ?

A: The IRIX 150mm f/2.8 Macro 1:1 Lens is a weather resistant manual focus Macro lens with sharp glass and a haze coating to create more contrast in the images. The 1.1" minimum focusing distance for the IRIX lens is similar to the 1.25" for the Sigma lens. The Sigma APO Macro 150mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Lens is a auto focus lens with a image stabilization, in a well built, (not as weather resistant as the IRIX), lens body. The Sigma specs say: " The optical design employs three SLD elements to virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color rendering. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied for greater contrast when working in strong lighting conditions" Both lenses will work fine for macro photography, the Sigma is autofocus, more durable and offers more edge sharpness. The IRIX focuses closer and cost a bit less.

Q: 10. Is there some reason that this is not listed as a "Portrait lens"? Seems like it would be marketed for that as well, considering the Focal Length and Large aperture. Makes me suspicious about the image quality.

A: This is a low (looks like nearly zero) distortion lens with 1:1 true macro capabilities. Of course you could use it as a portrait and it will, no doubt, be tack sharp giving pleasant bokeh with the 11 blade round aperture shooting at f/2.8. But it is more than just a portrait lens (on a full frame...a crop frame may be too tight), it is a true macro lens which requires exacting optics and 1:1 magnification or better. In other words, on a FF camera, this lens would be fine for portraits.
