Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Why doesn't Panasonic put gear rings on lenses rather that make users install them over the standard rings?

A: The Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-35mm f/2.8 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens (Micro Four Thirds) is not a cine lens but can be used to capture video. Only cine lenses have a built-in gear ring.

Q: 2. Does this lens work on an Olympus camera?

A: The Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-35mm f/2.8 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens with Filter Kit (Micro Four Thirds) is cross-compatible with all Micro Four Thirds camera systems.

Q: 3. Can i use it on BMPCC4K ?

A: Yes, the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-35mm f/2.8 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens (Micro Four Thirds) is compatible with the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K.

Q: 4. Can this lens be used as a step zoom?

A: The Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens must be zoomed manually by turning the zoom ring built into the lens. The lens does not have automatic zoom and does not provide step zooming.

Q: 5. Is this lens ver2 or ver3?

A: The Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-35mm f/2.8 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens with Filter Kit (Micro Four Thirds) is the redesigned replacement of the Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 II ASPH. POWER O.I.S.

Q: 6. How many stops of stabilization does this have on a camera without IBIS?

A: Although Panasonic does not state a specific number of stops the stabilization provides in the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-35mm f/2.8 lens, it is safe to say it will be about 2-3 stops. But also when using a wider angle lens camera shake blur is less noticeable as compared to a telephoto lens. Plus by having an f2.8 aperture the lens can achieve faster shutter speeds which also help reduce the risk of camera shake blur.

Q: 7. Does the minimum focusing distance remain the same at all focal lengths?

A: No it will change as the zoom/focal length changes.

Q: 8. This claims to have "micro step aperture control." How do you activate it with a Panasonic Lumix G9 II?

A: The Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-35mm f/2.8 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens (Micro Four Thirds) Micro Step Aperture Control is always available when changing the aperture priority while recording motion pictures. -M.

Q: 9. I am wondering if it is better to buy this lens or the Panasonic leica 8-18mm lens?

A: Distortion on both lenses are minimal. Yet, I prefer the 12_60 lens because it is versatile & light weight. Images produced by the super wide 8_18 lens are too small for me.

Q: 10. Is the zoom ring linear or does it accelerate when used with a GH6? I have a pair of Panasonic Leica lenses with sliding zooms.

A: The focus ring on the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-35mm f/2.8 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens is not linear. It uses a focus-by-wire system, where the speed of the focus adjustments depends on how quickly you turn the ring. So it's acceleration, the faster you turn the ring, the more the focus changes.

I use this lens almost exclusively for video work but included 2 toss away pics for zoom illustration purposes. I am not a photographer by any stretch. Pros: I love this lens because the 12-60 gives me exactly what I want / need: 1) Zoom - a decent wide angle and zoom without losing too much quality. I know the 12-35 is a little sharper but I need the longer reach. Most people can't tell the difference anyway and I didn't wan't to trade action for the extra sharpness. And I really don't like hassle / risk of changing lenses outdoors especially when my subjects are escaping from view. 2) Stabilization - Awesome image stabilization feature to match the GH5, critical for on the run video shots. Shake is not cool and hard to edit out. 3) Weatherproofing - Well weather proofed for outdoor work - a must for me. Nothing more disappointing than lens failure on a trip. 4) Weight - 320 grams is pretty decent when hiking / climbing. Cons: 1) Lens Cover - I don't like the lens cover at all. Too much fidgiting. 2) Aperture Range - Wish it had more aperture options on zoom but that is the trade off. Hope these comments help a little. So many good options out there. But I think Panasonic was right to recommend this 12-60 for the GH5, given my experiences so far.

I have the Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8 OIS. I viewed this as the ultimate "walk around" lens until I purchased the 12-60 f/2.8-4 OIS. Now I view my new lens as the perfect M4/3rds "One lens".

Like many, I've moved away from heavy full-frame rigs. Don't get me wrong. I love my Sony a7RIII with it's exceptional (but very heavy glass options) and it's awesome low light capabilities, but the ergonomics and mobility of my Panasonic gear is a game changer.

I've always compared the Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8 with my Canon 24-70 f/2.8 and found them both almost without fault. The 12-60 produces images on par with the 12-35, but gives me more reach, particularly with candid portraits. The difference in length and weight between the two lenses is insignificant. With all of these lenses I see a bit of vingneting especially when shooting wide open, but this is easily forgiven as it is easy to fix in post.

I've been experimenting with the G9 and the 12-60 f/2.8-4. I've been impressed that I can hand hold the camera and get good results indoors without a flash shooting with shutter speeds as long as one second. The dual OIS is truly amazing.

There's no going back for me. My only wish is that the manufacturers would put some serious effort into improving the M4/3rds sensors at ISOs greater than 1200.
