Celestron's CGX GoTo EQ Mount Head improves on their venerable CGEM platform to provide users with a heavy-duty research-quality mount for large optical tube assemblies (OTAs), accessories, and imaging rigs. Engineered to carry a 55-pound payload, it has high-torque motors and heavy-duty belt-drive system to improve tracking stability and reduce backlash which enable it to smoothly and accurately track near- and deep-sky objects for long periods of time. Its Vixen/Losmandy dual dovetail saddle makes the mount compatible with most plates in use today.

The brain of the CGX EQ is the NexStar+ computer controller. Equipped with a database of 40,000 objects, including the planets, stars, nebulae, galaxies, and the complete Messier catalog, it can also be programmed with up to 100 user-defined objects and filters for custom lists. Its intuitive menu-driven user interface allows you to observe the heavens with nine slew speeds and three tracking rates, plus anti-backlash compensation and Permanent Periodic Error Correction (PPEC) for smoother movements in the motors and improved tracking over time. Features such as guided tours, extended information on 200 popular objects, and multiple alignment options make the NexStar+ controller easy to use for new users and experienced stargazers.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can the magnification be changed? Like if I want to see it at a 100x? And then change it to 480x?

A: The only way to change magnification is with a more powerful eyepiece ( lower mm) or by a 2X Barlow lens which will increase the magnification of your existing eyepiece by 2X

Q: 2. What do I need to use 2 inch EPs?

A: You need a 2 diagonal (I use a Televue) and a 2 Visual Back to mate it to the optical tube. You can use a 2 to 1.25 adaptor to mount 1.25 eyepieces into the 2 diagonal so you can switch to a high power eyepiece without having to remove the 2 diagonal and visual back.

Q: 3. What is the Celestron nexstar evolution 9.25 WiFi band? (2.4G? 5G? other?). Thanks.

A: The Celestron NexStar Evolution 8 203mm f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain GoTo Telescope uses 2.4Ghz wifi.

Q: 4. Would this set up be capable of nebulas/galaxies as well as some planets for astrophotograhpy?

A: Yes the Celestron EdgeHD CGE 8" f/10 Aplanatic Schmidt-Cassegrain GoTo EQ Telescope is capable of viewing planets, nebulae and galaxies. It is also suitable for use in astrophotography when used with a camera.

Q: 5. Does this still have the RS232 port or has it been upgraded to USB?

A: The Celestron NexStar Evolution 8 203mm f/10 EdgeHD Aplanatic Cassegrain GoTo Telescope with StarSense AutoAlign has been upgraded to a USB port.

Q: 6. Can this scope with EdgeHD optics and Evolution mount be purchased without StarSense?

A: Yes it can. Here is a direct link: https://bhpho.to/2iAedkk

Q: 7. What is the Celestron nexstar evolution WiFi band? (2.4G? 5G? other?). Thanks.

A: It is 2.4ghz.

Q: 8. Does this telescope and mount stay fixed on the celestial object for astrophotography, similarto equatorial mount ?

A: Yes, this mount does track celestial objects and does a pretty good job. The problem is that it is an altitude-azimuth mount and so there is an effect called "field rotation" that will always be present. This is worse directly overhead and gets less pronounced as you go towards the horizon, but is always there. You can get around this somewhat by taking lots of short exposures and stacking them with software. I can take up to 15-second individual exposures and have combined these to make the equivalent of up to a 1-hour long exposure. Overall though, this is not a serious astrophotography mount in its stock form. You can buy a "wedge" to turn it into an equatorial mount and I've heard that works pretty well. I like the Evolution mount for its ease of use and setup. It's a great star party mount and I've had a lot of fun doing casual astrophotography of the brighter astronomical objects like the Messier Catalog. But if you want to take magazine quality images of an obscure nebula, you'll need an equatorial mount.

Q: 9. 1. Can you attach a phone to take pictures? 2. What is an economic mount we can get for this?

A: To attach a smartphone to the Celestron EdgeHD CGE 8" f/10 Aplanatic Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope (OTA Only) you can use this adapter: https://bhpho.to/3bqiPIf. The Celestron advanced VX Mount would be recommended for the Celestron EdgeHD CGE 8" f/10 Aplanatic Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope (OTA Only): https://bhpho.to/3FW892P

Q: 10. Can I attach a Nikon Z9 with appropriate adapters or is it too heavy?

A: The Celestron CGEM II 800 8" f/10 EdgeHD Aplanatic SCT GoTo Telescope can be used with a Nikon Z9 camera with this Neewer adapter: https://bhpho.to/48kjNBq
