Designed for demanding visual creators, this ultra-wide zoom offers no compromises regarding image quality, autofocus performance, or movie-making functionality.

  • Engineered for use with full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, the lens's constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the entire zoom range.

  • Features a combination of three ED elements, two AA elements, one ED aspherical element, and one standard aspherical element to effectively eliminate chromatic and spherical aberrations while also rendering excellent edge-to-edge sharpness and color fidelity.

  • Rounded 9-blade aperture provides deep, soft bokeh.

Offering an enhanced feature set for both still photography and videography, the FE 20-70mm f/4 G lens delivers fast focusing performance, improved tracking, and a series of attributes specifically designed for videographers.

  • Two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors provide smooth, silent, and precise autofocus performance as well as improved tracking performance for photos and videos.

  • Internal focusing system maintains the overall length of the lens and does not rotate the lens barrel while focusing, enhancing the use of circular polarizers and variable ND filters.

  • Updated optical design effectively eliminates focus breathing, focus shift, and axial shift to prevent unwanted movements and angle of view variations during movie recording.

  • Aperture ring with On/Off click switch and iris lock switch prevents the aperture ring from being accidentally moved between the f/4 and f/22 settings.

  • Optimized for filming, the lens supports active mode image stabilization and micro-step aperture control for smooth and seamless video capture.

  • Two programmable focus hold buttons and a focus mode switch for intuitive focus control.

  • Minimum focusing distance of 9.8" with excellent close-up performance at all focal lengths.

Compact and lightweight, this highly-versatile ultra-wide standard zoom offers a unique and expansive field of view for everyday shooting.

  • Hybrid construction uses both metal and plastic components to maximize both durability and a low weight design.

  • Fluorine coating on front lens element repels water, dust, fingerprints, and other contaminants while also making it easier to clean the front of the lens.

  • Dust and moisture-resistant design includes a rubber ring to seal the lens mount for working in inclement weather conditions.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Which lee filter system will work on this lens, i wanted to buy one nd filter big stopper, adapter ring and filter holder system compatable with this lens, suggestion will be highly obelized ?

A: Hi Amit, The list of accessories compatible with this lens may be viewed here: http://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/cscs/accessories/?area=gb&lang=en&mdl=SEL2470GM -Jerome

Q: 2. Does the barrel on this lens turn as you zoom in, or does it go straight out without rotating?

A: This lens has internal focus but not internal zoom, so lens goes out when zooming.

Q: 3. How does this lens preform on the a7ii? I heard about some autofocus issues and if so, will the update firmware fix this?

A: I had it on A7Rii, but I would assume that it be a same on A7ii. I did return this lens (B&H was really good about it, never hesitate to buy anything from them - they stand behind their products). My problem was with auto focus. I don't know if lens was defective or it just works this way. I do have the latest firmware update but taking a photo-shoot of about 200 pictures of the same person from about the same distance and same light conditions I had about 70% of pictures slightly out focus. Not enough to show on camera screen or smaller size prints, but enough to see if enlarged. I have 55mm Sony-Zeiss , 25mm Batis, 85mm Batis and 70-200 mm f4 Sony G. Never had any problems like that with auto focus on any of my lenses, so I know it was not a camera problem.

Q: 4. What is the 35mm equivalent?

A: On full frame it is 24-70. I'm guessing you're on micro 4/3s like an a6300 or a6500. I think it is a 1.5 conversion factor for those:36-105.

Q: 5. Any problem of dust when zooming (because the extension of the barrel)?

A: The Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G Lens (Sony E) is sealed to prevent dust issues.

Q: 6. When this zoom and the barrel moves in and out, does it pick up rain and dust in the air?

A: The Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G Lens (Sony E) has a weather-sealed design that prevents moisture and dust from entering the lens or the camera.

Q: 7. is the zoom automatically and manual ?

A: The zoom is operated manually on the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G Lens (Sony E).

Q: 8. I plan on using this on the recently announced Sony A6500. I'm a cinematographer coming from 1080p so tell me fellow videographers, just how SHARP is this? I definitely don't want to be disappointed after spending $2000+ Thanks everyone!

A: I shoot stills only,it's one of my sharpest lens for that.you can also go to DXOMARK web site to find out.

Q: 9. Does this lens work well with the eye and tracking focus features of the Sony A7SIII?

A: Absolutely! The Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM lens is one of the best lenses to take advantage of the A7SIII's great AF systems.

Q: 10. How is this lens with the Sony A6300? may this be to much lens for the body? Should I wait to see if something more compatable comes out?

A: Works great. I love the lens. Super fast focus. No problem with the 6300.

This lens is a joy to use. I have had it for over 2 months now and I am very pleased with my purchase. I love the 20mm wider angle. 24 or 28 mm often is just not wide enough for me. In addition to this the lens has a short minimum focus distance allowing for an excellent maximum magnification of 0.39x. These 2 characteristics allow you to be much more creative than other similar lenses. The lens is also well constructed, quite sharp and has a nice bokeh for an f/4 lens.

I'm new to Sony mirrorless cameras and jumped in the deep end with an A7RV. This lens was chosen for its relative compactness and suitability for travel and landscape photography.
So far I'm impressed with how sharp are the images, which therefore allows me to crop from the 60 MP sensor.
I've tried a few night shots (on a tripod) and been pleasantly impressed.
And lastly the 20mm wide end does give me some great landscapes.

This Camera was a "dream buy" for me. Canon didn't offer a considerable Military Discount, which was also important to me!

I am presently using the Sony 20-70 G lens for a light everyday walk around lens to compliment my Tamron 35-150. I was using the Tamron 20-40, but it just didn't work for me, especially in video. It would go out of focus while zooming in and out. This new Sony is outstanding when it comes to video. For photography, the IQ is also top notch. It's loaded with features that more expensive newer GM's lenses have like my 14, 24, and 35 GM's I own. A great purchase!

I've been using this lens for more than 3 months now, having bought it to replace my Sigma 24-70mm, which replaced my Sony 24-105mm, and am very pleased with it. The extra 4mm on the wide end is quite useful for the kind of shooting I do, and I don't miss the faster aperture (and the extra bulk and weight) of the Sigma. When I want to carry only one lens, this one fits the bill 99% of the time.

I got this lens specifically to use with the just-released Sony A7RC--with the goal of replacing two other lenses--SonyZeiss 16-35 and Sony G 24-105 and take advantage of the 60mp capacity of the A7RC and enabling me to carry and use only 1 lens..., avoiding the annoyance of changing lenses..., dirtying the sensor..., and reducing the payload from 44 ounces to 17 ounces.

It has done so with absolute brilliance. The loss of 4mm at the wide end of the focal range is not a big deal, even in fairly close interiors; 20mm is really wide enough and avoids some apparent depth distortions and foreground exaggerations that often need to be cropped out at 16mm.

The quality of the lens--better than the 24-105--and the 60mp crop-zoom have been a godsend..., the images are sharp--did I say sharp?--yes!..., up to 100% which is the size equivalent to about 170mm.

And...with a touch of Topaz Gigapixel AI, it is possible to go far beyond the equivalent of 200mm.

Some reviews complain of barrel distortion at 20mm but I have not experienced that. The A7RC has an internal auto-correct for lens distortion. Maybe just a smidge, easily corrected in Photoshop.

P.S. I sold the two lenses for just about what this one cost!!!

I am happier than a happy camper!!!

Have a Sony 24-105, which experienced a bit of water damage. I think that is why the manual focus quit working and subsequently decided to replace it. Really enjoy manual for landscape photography.

Was at a quandary as to whether to replace it with the same lens or choose the new 20-70mm. Decided for the newer, smaller lighter lens. I've had it out a couple times to test and after reviewing the images zooming to 200%, I am satisfied with the performance.

The extra range of the 24-105 is nice if you have no other lens but this lens gives you the wider 20 mm of course. The newer lens will now cause me to switch lenses when I need a longer reach and put on my 70-200 GM.

Even though I have limited use so far, it does produce sharp, clean results and the colors seem exceptionally vibrant!

I bought this lens as a general workhorse for nature photography while hiking. I was a little concerned about the lens extending/sagging while stomping around and hanging pointing downwards, but it firmly keeps its position. Yes, there's a lot of distortion and vignette wide open at 20mm, but it's easily correctable in post (DXO PL has profiles). Nice and light, compact for what it is, sharp, bright enough, overall a solid lens.

Feels more like a F4 G-master. Traded my 24-105 F4 OSS for the extra wide angle and slight weight advantage. Was surprised to find out how sharp a zoom in this range can be. Steady shot feature is not missed at all. Very happy with my purchase decision. I must mention that my first copy had a noise issue during large focus change which could not be tolerated for video shoots. This copy is totally quiet.

When I opened the box I knew I had made the right decision. That extra 4 mm hits the Goldilocks zone of focal lengths for me, creating the perfect all-around lens (I love to shoot wide). Not too heavy, not too big -- just right. You won't regret this decision.
