Flexible zoom range, fast design, and compact profile, the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD is a unique take on the ubiquitous and popular telephoto zoom. Designed for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, this lens spans a useful short-telephoto to mid-telephoto range and is characterized by its f/2.8 maximum aperture to suit working in available light conditions and for controlling depth of field. A sophisticated optical design includes a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements to correct a variety of aberrations and a BBAR-G2 coating helps to reduce flare and ghosting for high contrast and color accuracy. Additionally, a floating elements system is used to ensure consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, from 2.8' to infinity. Autofocus is handled by a pair of VXD linear motor units, which deliver notably fast, accurate, and quiet focusing performance, and full-time manual focus control is also available. Suiting this lens's use in inclement weather conditions, it also features a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to protect against fingerprints and smudging.

Versatile telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 105-270mm equivalent focal length range.

Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent brightness throughout the zoom range and offers improved control over depth of field.

Six low dispersion elements, including both XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and LD (Low Dispersion) designs, greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to realize improved clarity and color accuracy.

Three aspherical elements, including both glass-molded and hybrid types, help to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for high sharpness and accurate rendering throughout the zoom range.

BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting to achieve greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

Two VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motors deliver impressively quiet, quick, and precise focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. This focusing system offers a minimum focusing distance of 2.8' at all focal lengths, and a 1:4.6 maximum magnification at the 180mm focal length for working with close-up subjects. Full-time manual focus override is also possible, and it is compatible with Sony's Direct Manual Focus function or fine-tuned manual control.

Two VXD units work in conjunction with a floating elements system to maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range.

When working with manual focus at the 70mm focal length position, it is possible to focus as closely as 10.6" with a 1:2 maximum magnification ratio, however peripheral image quality may be reduced.

A moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Zoom Lock switch prevents unwanted barrel extension during transportation.

A: At this time, there are no compatible teleconverters for this lens.

Q: 2. When I use my Tamron 28-75mm, my A9II Struggles to shoot at max Electric Shutter Burst. does the 70-180 have this problem?

Q: 3. Does the image stabilization work on a Sony camera?

A: The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens for Sony E does not have image stabilization in the lens. If you are using a Sony camera with image stabilization in the camera it will work with this lens.

Q: 4. In which direction does the focus ring turn? Canon or Nikon direction? You know what I'm talking about.

A: In Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens for Sony E, the zoom / focus ring turns in the same direction as Nikon's zoom lenses, increasing focal length while being rotated clockwise.

Q: 5. Is the 0.5x maxiumum maginificaton only achieved at the 70mm focal length and 27 cm from the image sensor or is 0.5x possible at longer focal lengths and distances?

A: The 0.5x magnification is only achieved at the 70mm wide-angle end in manual focus (MF). Additionally this lens has a close focusing distance of 0.85m (33.5 in) across the entire zoom range. This allows for a Magnification Ratio of 1:4.6 at 180mm.

Q: 6. I just received my copy. Is it normal to hear a slight clunking sound when tipping the lens forward and backward? When I put it on the camera and turn it on, the sound goes away.

Q: 8. I am new to this type of camera/lens set-up. I had a Sony RX10 that was stolen. Now considering a Sony A6400. I want to take photos of my high school aged athelte - soccer, basketball, track. Class A school meaning we are not in a huge gymnasium and can be fairly close to the soccer field. I don't live near a camera store where I can check things out in person. Would this be a good lens for what I want to do or is there something you would recommend more - bear in mind - new to this type of camera and lens, want quality and decent action shots, need zoom but no nosebleed seats where I am, I do not have a trained eye but recognize decent photos, I do load photos onto my computer and crop/edit a bit. Open to suggestions - need to be careful not to buy more than I need based on my limitations but also mostly what I need while keeping budget and lack of skill in mind.

A: The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens for Sony E is a great choice for outdoor action shots with the Sony a6400 camera. It is fast and has great range. Please keep in mind that you will want to keep the shutter speed above 1/400 at f/2.8 for indoor gymnasium shots.

Q: 9. On the barrel, Tamron writes: "Designed in Japan". Where is it actually built?

A: The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Lens for Sony E country of origin is Vietnam.

Q: 10. Just received it and it's working great. Was wondering if it was suppose to come with a warranty card or do I just register online for warranty?

A: Just register the lens online. All you need is your proof of purchase.

I use the Sony 200-600mm for sports photography in daylight, but once the sun starts to set, or indoors, that lens struggles. Instead of spending $2500 on a 70-200 G Master, I opted for the much less expensive Tamron 70-180 f/2.8.

No complaints at all. The lens is sharp (images after significant cropping look more than fine by me), and auto focus is super fast on a Sony A7 iii.

I ended up shooting a polo match with the 70-180 once the sun started to set. After culling through everything, 70% of the keepers were from the 70-180 - which is remarkable given the distance to the action at the far end of the field.

No complaints with this lens, which is light enough to hand hold; comparatively I mount my beloved 200-600 on a monopod. In bright daylight, the 200-600 is still my go to lens for sports - but in any other situation I shoot with the Tamron with no problems whatsoever. I would buy this lens again in a heartbeat and have no reason to not recommend it to someone shooting fast paced sports.

I shoot 200mm on an APS-C, but that is effectively 300mm, so I can't speak to the loss of 20mm versus a 70-200.

This lens has the sharpest IQ of all my lenses. I use this lens on the Sony a7iii body. This is a pro lens as it has a constant f2.8 aperature which makes it good for portraits to sporting events.

So far I am very pleased with this lens!!! I needed a zoom, but the traditional 70-200 was out of my budget. This lens has solved that problem for me with it's extremely reasonable price point. I also really am enjoying the additional macro feature. I can't stress enough how pleased I am.

I've been using this lens for a year and so far this lens does not disappoint! I use it for wedding video and it's been great. I don't feel like I'm missing out on that extra 20mm of zoom, because the A7III has the ability to go into APS-C mode which will get me the extra zoom if I need it without losing video quality.

First time buying a non Sony brand lens and I don't doubt my decision at all. By no means I'm a professional photographer. But I do like new tech and photography. The pictures I took with my Sony A7 III using this lens came quite good. Raw pictures processed with Luminar 4.

Lightweight in this range. Super sharp and beautiful bokeh especially on the longer end. Fast and smooth focus. I just wish it has that 200mm range.

Using this for sports. It's larger than you'd think but still portable. Weighs little for the size. Would absolutely recommend for the sports videographer-the non-variable aperture makes it amazing.

Images are crisp at all zoom ranges. I dont see any fringing or vignetting. Especially impressive is close focus, and at 70 mm image size is 1/2 for closest focus, not much more extending through the zoom range
