The black DS-R5 MKB from Direct Audio is a workhorse ribbon microphone, ready for a wide range of instrumental recording applications, including guitar amps, drums, horns, and strings; it can also be deployed on vocals where a more "vintage" tonality is desired. The mic's ribbon element is 62mm in length and 0.002mm thick, providing a fast transient response while the figure-8 polar pattern picks up audio from both sides of the dynamic capsule, allowing you to capture room tone or sources on both sides of the mic. The DS-R5 features a wide frequency response from 20 Hz up to 18 kHz and provides a rich, dark, and natural sonic signature.

The DS-R5 includes a shockmount that isolates the mic from vibrations and handling noise for smoother recordings without low-end thumps that can ruin a performance. A carrying case is also supplied for storage and transport.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the MD-46 or the Electro-voice RE50 better in windy conditions? Which handles wind gusts better without a fur wind screen?

A: Neither one is going to handle wind well. Get a fur wind screen! Probably the MD46 is better, but that's not saying much under windy conditions.

Q: 2. Sennheiser MD-46, where is the serial number located and how do I get to it?

A: I couldn't find teh serial number. This mic really disappointed me. It was very expensive and produces an annoying noise. I thought was my mixer, but I tried oder mic and the noise have disappeared.

Q: 3. is this simply plug into an outlet ?

A: the Bogen Communications DDU250 does not require any power to operate. The unit will ship with a bare wire cable that needs to be wired into an existing PA or intercom system.

Q: 4. how do I convert 4 wire output to xlr ?

A: All you will need to attach a male XLR connector to the Bogen Communications MGN19A Dynamic Omnidirectional Gooseneck Microphone is a wiring diagram for a standard 3-pin male XLR connector using 4-conductor wire. Here is an example: https://www.belcom.co.uk/technical/starquad-wiring/starquad-wiring-balanced-xlr-xlr-connections/

Q: 5. How sensitive is this mic? Would it work well plugged directly into the xlr port of a canon xa series camcorder or would it need a stronger preamp?

A: Being that it is a dynamic mic, any recording device with an XLR mic input, will perfectly work with this mic.

Q: 6. Do I need to buy accessories to connect it to my computer?

A: Yes. There are two ways to connect to your computer; a cable/adaptor, which will allow connection to the 3.5mm (TRRS) mic into computer or, better, connect to an audio interface, which provides higher quality audio. B&H Product #'s: MOTCB2 RORCC10USXF

Q: 7. What does the other end of the cable look like? Can I connect it to a laptop via USB? I want to pass voice from a classroom to a teacher on the other end of a Zoom call. Thanks.

A: There is NO connector: Unterminated Four-Conductor Cable

Q: 8. Will this work with an XLR terminal plug adapter using the un-terminated wires? Like with the Rolls XLM113 3-Pin XLR Male Termination Plug for Bare Wire Connection. I read it has 4 wires and not sure what the 4th wire is for.

A: It wont work as a push to talk function, however it may work as an always on.

Q: 9. I'm getting a lot of handling noise with this mic. Does anyone have a suggestion/best practices on how to minimize, or eliminate, the handling noise? I almost can't use the audio recorded because of this issue.

A: Swap out the XLR cable. The mic shouldn't be generating much handling noise in normal use. I'm on my second one now after taking my original one around the world doing interviews for six years, and finally retired it. The most likely cause is a bad connection inside the XLR connector on the mic end of the cable, since that's where most of the stress is placed in routine use.

Q: 10. Not going into a PA system. Will it work ok with putting a XLR connector on going into a board for talk back?

A: It should work without issues. The paging functionality it's important when you are picking up the Amp, witch is the device that attenuate the music when the pagin relay on the mic it's activated.
