You can use TeraStation Essentials as a private cloud to easily back up data on the network, or integrate cloud services to the NAS storage to establish a hybrid cloud. The NAS server supports popular cloud services that you already use, such as Amazon S3, Dropbox, or Microsoft Azure/OneDrive. You can also keep non-essential workloads and data in the cloud while storing sensitive or essential data in your local TeraStation Essentials NAS for an extra layer of security.
The TeraStation Essentials NAS runs on a closed system, and not even the system administrator has root rights. The closed system on the TeraStation NAS bypasses third party apps and the potential vulnerabilities from them to keep the NAS safe. The TeraStation NAS also provides 256-bit AES encryption for the drives, preventing them from being read on another device if they are removed.
The NAS storage also offers encrypted file transfers so you can access and share data securely, boot authentication that prevents a lost or stolen TeraStation from booting, and a Kensington lock slot for physical security to further protect your data. Buffalo also offers an optional Anti-Virus Protection license (sold separately) as a security option to further protect your data from multiple cyberthreats.
TeraStation Essentials utilizes two-factor authentication (2FA) to add a key layer of login security to ensure that only authorized users can access the NAS. When enabled, users logging in to the TeraStation will also need to enter a verification code along with their username and password.
This extra layer of protection helps secure data on your NAS against hackers and ransomware. 2FA can significantly improve data security for your NAS, as it ensures that your login information cannot be easily compromised by threat actors, especially if you are logging in remotely.
Please note that you will be required to download and install the latest firmware version to access this feature.
Multi-gigabit Ethernet can increase network performance to enable faster data transfer speeds. The native 2.5 GbE port on the TeraStation Essentials NAS is ideal for those who are not ready to commit to the deep end of 10 GbE NAS storage. By using the same Cat5e cables that are already widely installed around the office, you can enjoy notably faster network speeds around the multi-user network environment at much lower costs.
The TeraStation Essentials NAS is a secure, straightforward data storage and backup solution designed to keep it simple yet effective. With pre-tested hard drives included and pre-configured RAID, the TeraStation Essentials NAS provides out-of-the-box reliability and data protection. Active Directory support and advanced NTFS permissions let you control file permissions at the subfolder level, and you can set up folders and user access as you see fit to easily store, back up, and manage your data on the NAS storage.
Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. What's the rebuild time for a lost disk when using large disks such as 18TB (144TB)?
A: RAID rebuild time is not something that can be calculated with any degree of real accuracy. Ultimately it will depend on which RAID mode you are using and the amount of data that needs to be restored as well as many other factors so we could not speculate on how long it would take exactly.
Q: 2. What drive speed to you get when on RAID 5 configuration ??
A: RAID5 affords 2x read speed with 1x write speed and one drive redundancy loss capability.
Q: 3. Does this come with the drives or the price is only for the unit without any hard drives ?
A: is the voltage of the prouduct suitable for 220v?
Q: 4. What type of drives are in this JBOD? SAS-3 12Gb or SATA III 6Gb? Who is the drive manufacturer and what model?
A: The manufacturer only specifies that it is 8x 6GB drives. They do not specify the models used.
Q: 5. My Mac is on OS-X 13.6.6 due to old Drobos. will it work with my Late 2019 MacPro?
A: Yes, the SanDisk Professional 96TB G-RAID Shuttle 8 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array (8 x 12TB) is compatible with macOS 10.15 and above. 13.6.6 will be compatible.
Q: 6. Can I plug two macbooks into this and edit off both of them at the same time from the two USB-C ports?
A: No, the SanDisk Professional G-RAID Shuttle 4 96TB 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array (4 x 24TB) can only be used with one computer at a time.
Q: 7. What is the transfer speed when configured to raid 5?
A: Unfortunately the manufacturer does not specify what the transfer speed may be when configured to RAID 5. This is likely because speeds may vary depending types of drive you use and other variations with computer spec.
Q: 8. Does it include CPU and Memory?
A: Yes. The server includes a set of twelve 6TB 3.5" hard drives and a 800GB NVMe SSD. As well as Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v3/v4 family (up to 145 W TDP) Dual Socket R3 (LGA 2011)
Q: 9. Does this hard drive enclosure come empty or with hard drives enclosed?
A: It comes with 2 x 4.0 TB HGST deskstar NAS hard disk drives.
Q: 10. Is there an advantage to buying the ThunderBay pre-loaded with drives? If the drives are purchased separately, it would be substantially less expensive (about $1,300).
A: These drives pre-included are enterprise level drives. So the quality may vary on model.
