This is a great close up light for macro work as well as close-in portrait work. I highly recommend it, but don't be intimidated by the big ol' box it comes in. It's a snap to set up and use.

It really is complete! Flowers are fun with the close-up lighting possibilities. Yet these little lights can become their own remote light sources off camera to highlight faces in a group portrait, or backlight product photography. Has an all-in-one case for storage, but each piece has its own protective pouch to carry along in the field pack.

I am a wildlife and nature photographer (www.lalithphotography.com)has been a Nikon user throughout. Recently I have added Nikon Closeup Speedlight R1C1 system to my Nikon armoury. I am still in the process of using, but found it is a must for macro. Little worried about the cost of batteries; ideal if these were rechargeble.

I take closeup photos of reflecting objects such as small metal items and antique light bulbs. Before I had the R1C1, it was a struggle with incandescent lighting systems and lighting tents. Unsatisfactory. I've had the R1C1 for only two weeks. What a difference! Goodbuy lighting tents. I don't attach the speedlights to the lens, so I can even use lenses that change length when focusing. I now have a total of five SB-R200 speedlights. The R1C1 comes with only two. I've attached the SW-11 Extreme Close-Up Positioning Adapter (diffuser) on all five. Sometimes only two speedlights are enough, sometimes I use more. I'm an amateur photographer. I find the R1C1 very easy to use. My camera is a Nikon D3200. The lenses are the general-purpose AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR that came with the camera, and an AF-S DX Micro Nikkor 85mm f/3.5G ED VR for very close closeups.

This is a perfectly built unit for lighting directly in front of your macro lens. The ability to change the position of the flashes on the ring as well as the angle is inspiring. The possibility of adding additional flashes is comforting. The versatility of being able to use these units off the camera and in combination with existing flashes from my collection is astounding. I was initially interested in a couple of the pieces individually. Once I started pricing them, I realized what a great deal the R1C1 was and decided that I had to have it. I really think this item has been under-marketed.

This is a very flexible lighting system for close-up. I use it primarily handheld in the field. With my D300 it gives consistently good results. The ability to vary the lighting ratios and position the flash heads contribute to good modeling on the subject. I would recommend the SU800 option even if the camera has CLS built in, because of the ease of setting lighting ratios. The Lithium batteries have a long life with lots of flashes and quick recycling.
