As a unified storage system, the Jupiter Callisto 160TB 8-Bay NAS Server from OWC / Other World Computing can function both as a NAS (network attached storage) and as a SAN (storage area network) at the same time. Tackle most any data need from general document storage to video production with Ethernet speeds up to 10 Gb/s coupled with advanced data protection, optimization, and flexibility via Callisto's ZFS-based storage architecture. Mini-SAS expansion supports up to seven OWC Jupiter Kore storage racks and can be expanded into petabytes of managed storage from a single Callisto box.

OWC's Jupiter Castillo features a 2 RU form factor and is equipped with eight drive bays that support 3.5 and 2.5" SATA or SAS drives, although this model has 160TB of storage that is configured as 8 x 20TB SATA III 3.5" HDDs. It is driven by a 2.2 GHz Intel Xeon Silver 4210 10-Core processor and 128GB of 2666 MHz DDR4 ECC Registered RAM in an 8x 16GB configuration, which may be upgraded to 512GB. Network connectivity is achieved using dual 10GbE ports, while storage expansion is accomplished using two 12 Gb/s Mini-SAS 8644 ports that allow for four SAS-3 compliant channels. Additional connectivity includes 2 two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 (3.1 Gen 1/3.0) ports and two USB-A 2.0 ports for direct/local system updating and mouse/keyboard support, a serial port, and IPMI 1GbE RJ45 port, and a VGA port for accessing Console Setup to determine the unit's management IP address if you're using a DHCP assigned IP address. For users who need RAID capabilities, the Jupiter Castillo comes configured as RAID Z1, but may be reconfigured as RAID Z2 or Z3.

OWC's Jupiter Callisto 8-Bay NAS Server operates using dual redundant 380W power supplies and the TrueNAS SCALE OS. It is compatible with systems running Windows 10 or later, macOS 10.15 or later, and Linux. Included are two power cables, two slide rails, two rail extensions, eight M5 pan head screws, twelve M5 cage nuts, and four M5 enclosure securing screws.

As a unified storage system, OWC Callisto provides both NAS and SAN functionality on Ethernet networks. This means that Callisto can integrate easily into existing Ethernet-based storage networks, or can be the heart of a brand new storage infrastructure to provide iSCSI storage to a server or file sharing SMB to Mac and Windows computers.

Utilizing ZFS storage architecture, advanced data management features come standard on OWC Jupiter Callisto:

  • Storage pools to ensure easy future expansion and optimal data usage
  • Caching to provide additional speed
  • Automatic data integrity management to prevent data loss
  • A robust set of RAID level options to ensure the best balance of speed and redundancy
  • Snapshots, replication, and clones for easy backup and recovery
  • Compression and data deduplication so data takes up less space

Jupiter Callisto's web-based management provides a straightforward interface to: configure storage, manage users and permissions, manage storage reallocation and expansion, monitor system health, and more.

When Gigabit won't do, you can use the built-in 10GBASE-T Ethernet interface for speeds up to 10 Gb/s while maintaining compatibility with 1GbE computers and hardware. Since Callisto provides 10GbE over 10GBASE-T ports, as opposed to SFP+ ports that require costly transceivers and cabling, you can utilize lower cost CAT 6a and CAT 7 copper cabling at distances up to 328' in a single run. Callisto does all that while maintaining compatibility with 1GbE networks, so you can upgrade computers to 10GbE as needed. With the option of adding 40GbE or 100GbE uplink interfaces, Callisto can support much larger network environments with drastically lower latency.

As your storage requirements grow, you can easily add up to seven OWC Jupiter Kore systems for a total of 2500TB (2.5PB) of centralized storage without the need to migrate data or take the system down. Simply install a Kore system into your rack, connect it to your Callisto system via Mini SAS, and with a few clicks in the management interface your new storage is ready to be utilized.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I have an older imac with thunderbolt 2. Is it possible to connect this, using a dongle, to convert thunderbolt 3 to 2? Am I losing valuable performance?

A: It is not recommended to use this device with any other connection aside from Thunderbolt 3. The lack of bandwidth in Thunderbolt 2 could cause a whole variety of issues, including data loss.

Q: 2. Does this drive come with software

A: The SanDisk Professional G-RAID Shuttle 4 24TB 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array does not come with software.

Q: 3. What model number are the 20TB drives in the 160TB version? Are they CMR or SMR drives?

A: The SanDisk Professional 160TB G-RAID Shuttle 8 8-Bay RAID Array (8 x 20TB, Thunderbolt 3 & USB 3.2 Gen 2) BH #SAGPH48H8160 does not specify the drives in the enclosure as they can vary.

Q: 4. If I want to get a full 160TB without any RAID (Redundancy), will I be able to get that?

A: You can use the full 160TB when in JBOD mode on the SanDisk Professional 160TB G-RAID Shuttle 8 8-Bay RAID Array (8 x 20TB, Thunderbolt 3 & USB 3.2 Gen 2) BH #SAGPH48H8160.

Q: 5. Does B&H stock replacement caddies for this drive, or can a potentially faulty drive just be replaced with an Ultrastar Enterprise on the faulty drive's caddy?

A: A drive can be replaced using the original caddy included with the device.

Q: 6. Are replacement drive caddies available for this drive, or can the drives just be replaced with Ultrastar Enterprise drive on an existing caddy if a drive fails?

A: Unfortunately B&H does not carry a replacement drive caddy for this enclosure. Should a drive fail, I would suggest contacting the manufacturer first for warranty service before attempting to replace the internal drive yourself.

Q: 7. I have the G-RAID Shuttle in 24tb. What replacement drive is recommended - is it just any internal drive of the same speed and capacity?

A: Any RAID compatible drive, 7200RPM and same capacity size. For example, WD Red Pro, or Seagate Iron Wolf Pro.

Q: 8. Are these units compatible with Dell Alienware Thunderbolt 4 connections?

A: Thunderbolt is a standardized protocol, so the SanDisk Professional G-RAID Shuttle 4 will be compatible with any Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 connection.

Q: 9. Is USB-C fast enough to edit 4K video from this external array or can I only use thunderbolt for that purpose?

A: The SanDisk Professional 160TB G-RAID Shuttle 8 8-Bay RAID Array (8 x 20TB, Thunderbolt 3 & USB 3.2 Gen 2) will still offer suitable speeds for 4K video editing from a USB-C host connection.

Q: 10. Can I use 4 drives in this array to create 2 RAID 1 mirrors and the rest as RAID 5?

A: Yes, you can use 4 drives on this SanDisk Professional 160TB G-RAID Shuttle 8 8-Bay RAID Array to create 2 RAID 1 mirrors and the rest as RAID 5.
