If auto-focus can't find something in the focus area to use for focus, the lens (any lens) will hunt -- going back and forth between the extremes of close and far focus to signal to you that it can't find anything to focus on. If your camera has continuous focus capability, the lens will continuously focus as the subject moves. Take a look at your camera manual to see if the camera has this feature. The 50mm f/1.8 is a good lens, I use it a lot and I'm always happy with the results I get.
