Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this lens suitable for cinema camera use? The balloon shape end makes me think it would be difficult to attach a matte box for instance. Also, does the lens extend and retract during focus?

A: Yes. We suggest the following Matte box when using this lens. Cavision 3 x 3 Swing-Away Matte Box Package with 15mm Bracket for DSLR Cameras BH #CAMB3485S15B • MFR #MB3485S-15FBSA-DSLR https://bhpho.to/3xg7a8v

Q: 2. How many blades does the diaphram have? Are they rounded?

A: The lens has 9-blade circular aperture.

Q: 3. Have they fixed their aperture communication problem with Sony? Loxia lenses have issues with bodies newer than A7iii

A: The Zeiss Nano Primes do not share components with Loxia, and are fully compatible with all Sony E-mount cameras. Zeiss has tested them extensively on everything from an A7IV to the Burano & Venice and they have discovered no compatibility issues.

Q: 4. I see aperture ring and numbers in the product image. If this was used on D7200, does the camera recognize the aperture selected on the ring? And how do the 1/3 aperture stops work?

A: The aperture selection on the ZEISS Milvus ZF.2 lenses can be done using the ring on the lens barrel, or via the sub-command dial on the camera. This choice needs to be made in the set-up menu on the camera (refer to the D7200 user manual for more information). When the aperture ring on the lens is chosen, the aperture is changed in 1/2 stop increments. When the aperture is controlled via the camera using the sub-command dial, then the aperture can be controlled in 1/3 stop increments. When using this method, the aperture on the lens should be set to the lowest level until it clicks into place. Otherwise you will see EE readings in the camera menu.

Q: 5. Can I Use this lens with Sony A7models with an special adapter ?

A: The best adapter is this one to use the ZEISS Otus 28mm f/1.4 ZE Lens for Canon EF on a A7 series camera, https://bhpho.to/46wH423. Note the mfr does not list that lens specific but should be find.

Q: 6. Does this lens have internal focusing? I would be using it with a matte box and would like to keep the option of filters open.

A: The ZEISS Milvus 1.4/25 features internal focusing and there is no front telescoping of the barrel while focusing.

Q: 7. Is anyone using this lens on a Nikon D800? If so, how easy or hard are you finding it to nail focus where the subject is not perfectly still?

A: It takes some practice. I did a shoot recently with the milvus and I missed a lot of shots. I made it a point to keep the lens on my camera most of the time. I find using the guage in the view finder helps a lot.

Q: 8. Would the Zeiss Large Lens Gear fit this or do you recommend a different one for cinemod?

A: The ZEISS Lens Gear (Large) is not compatible with the ZEISS Milvus 15mm f/2.8 ZE Lens for Canon EF.

Q: 9. Is this lens compatible with the Nikon D500?

A: I have used one on the D850 for four months and it is exquisite. The dynamic range is better than I remember the scene with my naked eye. Doesn't seem possible but the proof is there --- shadow detail, no washed-out highlights.

Q: 10. I love Zeiss lenses & currently own milvus 25mm & APO Sonnar 135mm lenses. I currently have Sigma 85mm Art lens & thinking of buying a Milvus 85mm or Sigma 105mm Art lens & sell 85mm Art later. I shoot portraits using live view, so manual focus is not an issue. From purely optical quality perspective, which lens is the better in terms of bokeh, color, micro contrast, sharpness an subject separation ability?

A: My recommendation is to rent the lens and compare. Many of the attributes you call out are subjective and cannot be measured / compared between brands. The only way to know for sure is a side-by-side comparison using the same camera, lighting and subject matter.
