Ideal for podcasts, scripted or unscripted dialogue, panel discussions, house-of-worship applications, and more, MixAssist Plug-In for MixPre-10 II works by intelligently attenuating the gain of microphones that are not in use to reduce unwanted noise, feedback, and comb filter artifacts in multi-microphone applications. The result is a cleaner and more consistent recording. MixAssist automixes post-fade signals to the left and right buses and does not affect the prefade ISO tracks.

Download MixAssist to your computer and move it to your SD card. Insert the SD card in your MixPre-10 II and install the plug-in.

General
CompatibilitySound Devices MixPre-10 II

  • For each microphone, an ever-changing and automatic threshold is continuously calculated. This per-channel threshold has a slow-attack and very fast decay.
  • When an incoming microphone’s signal is instantaneously above this threshold it can be turned on. Steady-state sounds (air conditioning, etc.) will not turn on a microphone—only varying speech-like signals does.

  • The envelope of all microphone signals is logically compared together to get the instantaneous peak of the loudest microphone.
  • Each microphone envelope is continuously compared to this Maxbus; if the envelope is greater (and it meets the NAT criteria), then it is gated on. If a talker speaks into two or more microphones, it will only gate on one of the microphones, eliminating any comb filtering.

  • The last used microphone remains on, creating a seamless mix.

  • When a microphone is turned off, it does not turn all of the way off, instead it is attenuated by a certain amount, typically 15 dB. This results in a more transparent sound.

  • You can use MixAssist at sampling rates of 44.1, 47.952, 48, and 48.048 kHz, and at either 24-bit or 32-bit float bit depth.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Do both batteries need to be mounted at the same time? The mixpre does not offer an option for a 7.4 watt power source-only the 14. Can I power with one and select that output? Or is it recommended to utilize both? If I can power with one battery at a time, what power setting do you recommend selecting?

A: I am not seeing an option for both batteries to be used at the same time.

Q: 2. is it possible to use the ambeo in conjunction with additional microphones in inputs 5-8?

A: Yes. The Sennheiser AMBEO VR 3D Microphone BH #SEAVRM offers 4 Matched KE 14 Cardioid Capsules in Ambisonics A-format arrangement: 1: front-left-up (FLU) 2: front-right-down (FRD) 3: back-left-down (BLD) 4: back-right-up (BRU) Mixing to B-Format: W: FLU + FRD + BLD + BRU X: FLU + FRD - BLD - BRU Y: FLU - FRD + BLD - BRU Z: FLU - FRD - BLD + BRU A split cable 4XLR is included in the box..

Q: 3. am I crazy or does this device shut off all mic inputs other than 1-4 in ambisonic mode? this would mean while using the ambeo i cannot plug in any other microphones?

A: That is correct, only channels 1-4 can be operated for ambisonic recording .

Q: 4. Is it best practice to turn off phantom power before turning off the device in beginner mode? Thank you for your time.

A: You do not have to turn off the phantom power before turning on the MixPre-10 II. It is advisable that you do not have the phantom power turned on when only using dynamic mics, or battery powered mics, as it will consume more battery power from the recorder unnecessarily.

Q: 5. Hi! I have TalentCell Rechargeable Lithium Ion 12V Power Bank batteries and Hirose cable connector. Is it possible to power the equipment that way? Will the Phantom Power of all tracks work? And all system functions? Thanks!

A: Hello Eisejuaz. The MixPre-10 II requires 10 to 18 volts of power at the hirose power port, so your 12-volt power bank should work perfectly. The MixPre-10 II should operate normally on 12 volts.

Q: 6. Do I need a buy an external Time Code or the integrated one is good enough?

A: This unit has a built in time code generator, although it will sync if you prefer to use an additional generator.

Q: 7. Does this only mix to stereo or can it upmix to 5.1?

A: The Sound Devices MixPre-10 II Field Recorder will only mix to stereo. For a 5.1 mix, you can upload the tracks to your computer's DAW.

Q: 8. Can I connect a black lion word clock when using this as a recording interface?

A: Yes, the Sound Devices MixPre-10 II Multitrack Field Recorder can be connected to a Black Lion Word Clock. As per Sound Devices, just set your BNC input and/or output to WC.

Q: 9. are you sure that the 2 x TA3 3-Pin Female Balanced Line Output are Female and not Male which is more logic?

A: They are male. Each port has 3 pins (not holes).

Q: 10. If I use two extra mics, and plug them into the mini inputs, is there a way to control the input level on those extra mics? I see only 8 input controls on the face of the unit.

A: The Mix-Pre-10 II has a single 3.5mm menu-selectable input that can be used for microphones with plug-in power, as an unbalanced line level stereo aux input, or for timecode. This aux input can be assigned as an input source for any of the channels which will allow you to use the level control for that channel to control the mic. The other 3.5mm connection next to that is a headphone output.
