Q: 1. Any recommendations for affordable lav mics to use with this recorder for podcasting? I have some inexpensive lavs that work OK with my current recorder, but they use button batteries. I tried my more expensive Sennheiser lav and got no signal at all. I would prefer lavs that didn't require batteries.
A: Jason, are you looking for a wired or wireless Lav? I personally always try and use a wired Lav wherever possible ... high fidelity, clear quality audio is critical to most forms of broadcast digital media. If you're happy to go with a wired Lav I'd highly recommend the Shure MX150 Subminiature Lavalier Microphone (Wired XLR) .... you tuck into the collar/chest area of the talent, run the thin Shure cable out of the shirt and then attach a pro studio XLR cable and run it into the Zoom H6 XLR inputs ... really delivers stunning audio quality and works every time without having to worry about RF interference and batteries dying.I have a couple of them and can either record them as separate mono tracks in the H6 or mix them as a stereo pair.I purchased both my H6 and the two Shure MX 150s from B&H and have been totally satisfied with the set-up ... you pay a bit more for a pro Lav but the peace of mind and audio quality is well worth it ... and besides which B&H prices are always very competitive and if you have any issues, B&H service is second to none!Cheers,Neil
Q: 2. Does it come with editing software? if not any recommendations?
A: Nope, it doesnt come with a software but it is a great tool for recording outside or in the studio. I've even used it as an audio interface and it works fine. Very good quality. The only thing I dont like is that it is advertised as 96khz but when you use it as an audio interface on a multitrack session the audio output is only 16khz.
Q: 3. does this hold one kit or multiple kits?
A: According to Teradek: "This case is for Bolt XT 500/1000/3000 or XT Sidekick Sets, It can fit 1 TX and up to 2 RXs with or without dual Canon/Sony battery plate." https://teradek.com/products/protective-skb-case-for-2-bolt-xt-rx?variant=13699845947437
Q: 4. Does this case have rails for hanging file folders?
A: Unfortunately this case does not have rails for hanging file folders.
Q: 5. How do these devices fear for double usage.. : Use it as a Musik player SD cards, as a Walkman, in the car or home HiFi stereo ) ? Does it play all tracks of a folder..? No playlist I presume - and interface just impossible for navigation ?Would need a better playback chip ?Just wonder as I do need an excellent recorder sometimes, I could often listen to good music between these occasions ;-) (I do use my mobile phone and a dedicated mobile player but still I wonder)
A: I don't use mine for playback only for recording. It's an amazing recorder for live music. I download the wave files for further editing
Q: 6. How do I record my i-phone to the zoom h6 recorder?
A: I think the line cable (aux cable) would work better specially if you want to record a call or convo from your phone
Q: 7. Phantom
A: The Zoom H6 Portable Handy Recorder can supply 12, 24, or 48V of phantom power to the XLR jacks.
Q: 8. I am new to audio recording. I make short films at what db level I should record the voice and sounds? At what gain number (1-10) I should keep the channel knobs while recording.
A: There is no universal setting that works in all situations. You should try to get the levels as high as possible, without them ever maxing out, clipping. That will always depend on where the mic is in relation to where the actor is, and how soft or loud they will be. While they rehearse set the levels so they only hit red a tiny bit. It's always best to have someone attending to the sound so they can adjust the levels if the actors get louder than rehearsed. Break a leg! ;)
Q: 9. Are USB microphones compatible with this device?
A: No. You'll need microphones with 1/4 or XLR plugs.
Q: 10. Does the device allow you to create unique file names? When relinking media during editing I don't want to have multiple clips named "Zoom 1" etc.
A: You can change the project names for recordings created on the H6 to use a unique name. Although the root portion of file names within a project can be the same for multiple files, there will not be duplicate file names since the extended name of each file will be different. Here is a link to the H6 user manual for more details (see page 25 for folder and file structure, page 50 for changing project names): https://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/534154.pdf
