All monopods are handy, but the 2000 Tall Monopod with Grip-Action Head from Oberwerk is in a league of its own. Its maximum height is 78 inches, much taller than most monopods, allowing the use of large binoculars for stargazing. Oberwerk reports a 6-foot-tall person can stand up straight and comfortably look through the eyepieces of astronomy binoculars pointed straight up at the night sky. Imagine sweeping the Milky Way with only a pair of binoculars and a collapsible staff.

The monopod comes with a grip-action ball head—squeeze the grip to tilt up or down, release it to lock the optic in place. The included quick release plate has a 1/4"-20 mounting stud. Of course, you can use the Tall Monopod for regular binoculars, a spotting scope, or a camera, up to 8.8 pounds.

Q: 1. Hi, I have one question. Can the fluid head be removed from the center column? I understand it might be a stretch, but if it is removable, how much does that fluid head weight?

A: Yes, the head is removable, revealing the world-wide standard 3/8" connecting thread.

    Q: 2. Hi , can I use for canon d80? Thanks

A: Hi, The canon 80D will be too heavy to fit on this unit. The Vello ActionPan Professional Grade Stabilizing Action Grip/Handle, B&H # VEVB1000, would be better suited for a DSLR.

Q: 3. I have fully loosened the pan and tilt locks and still feel like there is lots of tension. Is there another way to reduce the tension for quicker panning/tilting?

A: You can adjust the counterbalance on the side of the video head. This will loosen up the drag and allow you to pan and tilt more smoothly.

Q: 4. Is the 22 inches length with the head still on, or does it get even shorter with the head removed?

A: The 22 inches length is with the head on. With the head off it will be about 18 inches.

Q: 5. Will this be compatible with a Canon EOS 90D?

A: The Vello VB-2000 ActionPan Pro Stabilizing Action Grip/Handle will work for the Canon 90D.

Q: 6. Is the weight of this really 7lbs? I only see the shipped weight listed

A: According to Padcaster the weight of the tripod will be between 6 to 6.5 pounds.

Q: 7. Is anyone can tell what are specs for this tripod ?

A: This tripod has a load capacity of 13.2 pounds, a max height of 71", folded length of 22", converts into to a Monopod and has a 3/8"-16 Accessory Interface on it.

Q: 8. Will this work on the Cannon Vixia HFG50 Camcorder.

A: The Vello VB-2000 ActionPan Pro Stabilizing Action Grip/Handle will work for the Canon HF G 50.

Q: 9. Does it have the arca swizz plate to fit in tripod? what is the load bearing capacity ?

A: Although this action grip does not come with an Arca Swiss type plate at the bottom, you can attach one via the 1/4" female thread below the camera knob.

Q: 10. What is the warranty for this model?

A: The Oberwerk 10x32 Sport HD II Monocular includes a Limited 2-Year Manufacturer Warranty.

When I started investigating heads, I saw this mentioned on a blog, I also looked at some other options, particularly the Really Right Stuff MH-01. After reading several reviews of each, I opted for the Kirk MPA-2. I've only started to use it, but am highly impressed.

The metal finish is incredibly smooth but also feels solid and durable, The knobs are well designed, easily distinguished by feel, and provide great ergonomics. And the action is every bit as smooth as the finish.

The top plate can be rotated 90. (You'd want this mainly to switch between a mounting plate on the camera perpendicular to the line of sight versus a mounting plate on the lens in line with the line of site.) An allen screw needs to be loosened to do this. But the level of craftsmanship in this unit covers that: an allen wrench is included, and stows directly in the plate. (In the product image in which the KES logo can be seen, the allen wrench is the light-colored item seen on the end of the top plate.) That was a delight to discover!

Just used this monopod head for 3 days at Bosque del Apache with Nikon 200-500 f5.6. Took a little getting used to, but works very well. The locking knob is very precise and has a broad range of preload force. This is nice since I also used it with Fujifilm x-t2 for landscape photos. The included allen wrench and ability to reorient the clamp is great. I would buy this item again.

If you need or use a monopod then you need a monopod head and you can do no better than the MPA-2 by Kirk. This monopod head has the added convenience of being compatible with the arca swiss style quick release plates and is of sturdy design and construction so as to make it the first choice for larger lenses. I haven't found anything wrong with this monopod head yet and don't think that I will.
