Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. does this printer have a paper feed tray on the back like the canon pro-100?

A: No this would not.

Q: 2. I would like to use all pigment ink cartridges from the beginning. Will that work on this printer?

A: Only the PGBK Black the PGI-250 for this printer is pigment, all the other 5 inks c/m/y/k/g CLI-251 are dye based. Canon doesn't make any in pigment that fit this printer. Using aftermarket inks in my experience clogs the printheads. If you do it, it's @ your own risk.

Q: 3. I have El Capitan operating system - is this printer compatible?

A: It works with both, my MacBook Pro laptop and Mini, yes! Now, the ink is another issue, it would not last long if you use the printer once a week/month. In between, it just dries out. Every day use, that's OK. Big prints - amazing!

Q: 4. Want to replace Epson Stylus Photo 1400 with Canon iP 8720. Operating system Windows 7. Possible?

A: Yes, the Canon PIXMA iP8720 Wireless Inkjet Photo Printer supports Windows 7.

Q: 5. Can this printer handle fine art paper like William Turner?

A: This printer can handle paper weights up to 200 gsm. The specific paper you are asking about is the Hahnemühle William Turner 310 gsm, the answer is no.

Q: 6. GSM maximum for this printer? Will it accept Canon Pro Premium Matte paper with 210 GSM? How about other brands with 265 GSM?

A: Yes, the Canon PIXMA iP8720 Wireless Inkjet Photo Printer (B&H# CAIP8720) can use paper such as Canon PM-101 Photo Paper Pro Premium Matte (13 x 19", 50 Sheets) (B&H# CAPM1011950) which is 210gsm. Given that Canon lists this printer as compatible with their Canon Pro Platinum Photo Paper 4 x 6" (50 Sheets) (B&H# CAPPPP4650) which is 300gsm and also their Canon MG-101 Magnetic Photo Paper (4 x 6", 5 Sheets) (B&H# CA3634C002) which is 670gsm, it would seem unlikely that you will experience any difficulty with any paper that is not card stock. Canon does not, however, list a specific gsm limit.

Q: 7. Is Canon Premium Fine Art Smooth paper compatible with the iP8720? 310 GSM, 16.5 MIL

A: Canon does not list its PIXMA iP8720 Wireless Inkjet Photo Printer (B&H# CAIP8720) as being compatible with its Canon Premium Fine Art Smooth Paper (13 x 19", 25 Sheets) (B&H# CA1711C004), nor vice versa. To be clear, Canon officially gives a listing of the Canon papers that will work with this printer (see p.195 of the manual) and the one you asked about is clearly excluded. Notably, it’s 50 gsm heavier than the heaviest of them. Speaking generally, in such a situation, even if such especially heavy and thick paper does make it through a printer (which is likely in this case), it can happen that the springs used to give the rollers the right amount of tension to grip the paper may be overly compressed by the paper’s weight and thickness. The consequence of that excessive compression can be that the tension is reduced and so the rollers subsequently have difficulty gripping thinner papers. There are also cases in which a printer’s print head may even experience too much friction with overly thick papers and thus the prints come out poorly, if at all. Having said all of that, there's no question that the paper itself would do well with the ink, and if you use individual, flat, and unbent sheets of such paper in the top-rear feed then you will get the best result possible. For all the reasons mentioned, we just cannot endorse doing that.

Q: 8. Does this printer driver support Mac OS Big Sur 11.1?

A: Yes, the Canon PIXMA iP8720 Wireless Inkjet Photo Printer BH #CAIP8720 is compatible with Big Sur.

Q: 9. how fast do the cartridges dry up. I am an on and off semi-pro photographer so the same would go for printing. printer might sit for 30 days unused then might spend half a day printing continuously. It would be dedicated to photo only I have a dell laser scanner printer for documents. I do take night shots and do dusk and dawn silhouettes so I am concerned about the halo effect expressed by another owner. Is there a different canon printer that doesn't have this issue? or should I be looking to another printer altogether?

A: I've found that I can let the print sit idle for well over 30 days with no hit of drying. After that I will print 15 photos and have no issues with the print quality at all.

Q: 10. Is this printer capable of manual duplexing?

A: Of course, just flip the paper over and reload it blank side up.

Superb color on 1st print out of the box using Image garden, very sharp prints. If you learn to use your Print Driver completely you will be very satisfied with this printer. Mine is USB connected on an iMac.Replaced a broken Pro-100 with this and its all I needed...

We use this in one of our art studios and it has performed very well for us. It prints the most accurate color on plain paper, and will do oversize prints (our last project was 10 x 26 paper, which it handled quite well.) It does an even better job on photo paper. Very reliable too.

Impressed and satisfied with the quality of this printer and
prints. Certainly, a bargain at the
price point.

Coming from owning a Canon Wide Format 24" printer for over
a decade it does more than an adequate job. It does not have all the bells and whistles but delivers high quality
prints.

The versatility / controls for this printer depends on the software
program from which you print.

Important Note:

The printer is shipped with a CD / DVD with installation
software etc. whose version is 2013.

My Win 10 desk computer does not have a CD / DVD reader. I am not a computer savvy guy so I struggled trying to download the latest software drivers etc. from Canon's web site and installing
them, without success.

Eventually I decided to see if the computer recognized the
printer via the USB connection. Control Panel Hardware & Sound View Devices & Printers. Double clicking on the iP8720 icon immediately went to the internet and brought up the latest software and allowed l me to make the installation, fantastic.

Really appreciate B&H's fast delivery!!

I've read a lot of bad reviews of this printer. The biggest complaint seems to be wifi printing. I must admit, I can't get that to work correctly. But, I don't care. The quality of the prints that come out of this machine is so good for the price point, I can look past the WiFi issues. I bought this machine a number of years ago and didn't print to it for over a year. I started it back up and amazingly, the prints that came out of it had no issues. I highly recommend purchasing the Canon-branded photo paper (my favorite is Luster). Again, the print quality is top-notch. For the time being, this printer is working great. When it's time to replace it, I will absolutely look at what Canon has to offer for inkjet photo printers. Again, the quality is amazing to me. And if the photos are stored correctly and you are using the Chroma inks and not knockoff cheap inks, the photos could last 300 years! I'm very happy with this printer.

Very happy with it. I still miss my old Pixma Pro, but this works for me.

Good choice if you still want a quality photo printer without paying PRO-line prices. I was genuinely surprised how well large prints came out. Even with only 6 colors, the prints are very colorful and detailed.

We use these printers at the office. It's been over 4 years at least. No problems, easy to use, prints on DVD surfaces with good client presentation quality. Large format is also good. Wifi for some of these pixma is a hassle, so we just wired it to the network. But we need solid color printers and this pixma fits the bill. The more functionality you add, the more chances that something will go wrong, so keep it simple if you have time-sensitive work. What is wrong with the canon review form? It works badly on DuckDuckGo.
