Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. At what focal length is f/4 no longer the fastest aperture?

A: Unfortunately, as of today April 9th, we have not received the lens yet and cannot check at what focal length it is no longer f/4.

Q: 2. Compatible with the 1.4x and 2.0x Z Teleconverters?

A: No, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR Lens is not compatible with neither the Nikon Z Teleconverter TC-1.4x, nor the Nikon Z Teleconverter TC-2x.

Q: 3. Does the zoom lock on this lens work at any focal length in the range or only at 28mm or 400mm setting?

A: The lock switch on the Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR Lens works at 28mm only.

Q: 4. Adapter to use this lens on a Canon mirrorless camera?

A: Currently, there is no adapter for the Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR Lens or any Z-mount lens to adapt to a Canon RF mount.

Q: 5. Aside from the longer zoom range, how does this compare to the Z24-200mm lens?

A: The Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR Lens and Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR Lens are in a similar class of lenses, but there are a number of differences between the two. Here is a side-by-side comparison chart: https://bhpho.to/4cJHq8Q

Q: 6. How does this compare to a DX55-300 4.5/5.6 with FTZ converter used on a Z6II for night soccer?

A: The Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens (BH #NI55300GAF) is not a full frame lens, so if you were to use it instead of the Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR Lens on the Z6II you would have a vignetting issue unless you were to crop into the image. The Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens does have a less restrictive aperture range as you zoom in, so it would be slightly better in low light situations. However, since most soccer fields tend to be pretty well lit, lighting likely won't be as big of an issue.

Q: 7. Does this lens have a manula focus function? if so, how do I get to it?

A: The back ring on the Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR Lens allows you to manual focus.

Q: 8. As Nikon Z8 IBIS has "VR" built-in, what does this zoom's VR add to stabilization vs. Nikon Z 24-120mm F4 S for Z8 IBIS?

A: Because In Body Image Stabilization is not as effective with telephoto lenses as it is with wide-angle lenses, it helps to have both types available.

Q: 9. How does this lens compare to the old 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 lens (w/ FTZ adapter) on a Z8, in terms of sharpness and auto-focus?

A: The Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR Lens will be sharper and have more reach than the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens with the Nikon FTZ II Mount Adapter on the Nikon Z8 Mirrorless Camera.

Q: 10. Anyone using this with the ZF? I'm sure you would need the small rig grip, but just wondering how this lens would balance. Thx.

A: Due to the weight and length of the Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR Lens, it is not necessary to use with a tripod collar or support grip on the Nikon ZF or any other Nikon Z model

I was surprised that this lens did a decent job catching bird photos/action. Bokeh was pretty OK, given the long range of the lens. I enjoy nice close-ups as well, and best of all, it is light to carry around with my Nikon Zf camera. I still use my D500 and 500Pf lens for serious bird photography, but I can't carry it around very long, and it lacks the versatility of this lens (and camera). A happy compromise.

Nikkor lenses always had great glass - and this sense does not disappoint - in fact it makes me so happy because it is so light weight - and at my age of 76 , after 6 decades of making photographs and using Nikon equipment - I am grateful for that light weight in such a quality long lens.

I've been using this lens for almost 4 months and am loving it. What makes this lens work is the use of high ISO's. Newer software is amazing at correcting this and it will get better. I have shot softball tournaments from 10am until midnight under field lights. Never missed a beat. Birding? Landscapes? Does great. Nikon Z lenses are a new standard.

I wanted a lens for my Nikon Z6 iii that would be good for wildlife both at a distance and close up. My main lens is a prime 500 mm...great for distance but not for when wildlife is near. I ran the 28-400 through three days of tests. All outdoors from sunrise to sunset. I was worried that f8 at 400 mm might be soft...it wasn't. Would be happier if it was 6.3...but it's not and I am still happy.

I provide photo and video services for construction, industrial and real estate. I usually leave my Z28-400 on my back up camera body to make sure I don't miss any shots. It has performed well. images are crisp. I also have started using it as my go-to walk--around lens. A bit heavy buy I need the exercise.

Good lens. Performs as advertised!

I'm still testing this lens but so far, I'm very much impressed! It's so convenient to be able to pack a single lens for a full day of shooting!

I had the 28-300 F lens and this new lens is much lighter and sharper. It also doesn’t have the lens creep that always drove me crazy with the F lens.

Bought this lens for a trip to Italy where I knew I would be walking around most of the day, and wanted one lens. Happened to see Ken Rockwell's review, and ordered it on the spot. Perfectly matched his review. I saved morning sunrises and sunsets for the 24-70 f2.8, but everything else with the 28-400 was wonderful. With the zoom range, boy did I get some terrific shots I would have missed without the large zoom range, Very happy with the performance within the parameters others have commented on.

For photographing my kids events (sports, scouts, etc.) and travel this lens is perfect. I had the old F mount versions (18-300 DX and 28-300 FX) and this was the first Z mount lens I purchased as I’ve found they’re the best bang for the buck. You can’t beat the focal length range and while I’d love if it was a fixed f5.6, f4-8 works with only a very rare occasion wanting for a faster f stop. I’m not a professional photographer and I don’t interrogate every pixel, but I’m sure if you are this might not work for you. However, if I have to limit what I take with me this is the first lens I grab. My only complaint with the lens is you do get a lot of barrel creep and if you’re going to walk around with it on a shoulder strap you’ll want to use the zoom lock. If you’re looking for a really good does most everything really well, I think you’d be happy with this lens.

Great lens for the money. I have the 100-400, but it’s too heavy and when you need the focal length, without the weight, the 28-400 is the answer. A bit soft on the edges, but this can be easily corrected in post. Highly recommend. It’s also great for IR, no hot spot.
