Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. dose this come with a lens cap and a rear cap?

A: Yes.

Q: 2. How is the corner sharpness on this lens? And the ultrawide 21mm converter? I've seen mixed reviews.

A: I have been surprised by the quality on this lens - I may have a good copy, but corners have been fine for me. Distortion has been easy to fix (no profile in Adobe raw that I have seen). Build quality and overall rendering are a touch behind the zeiss branded 35 and 55. I have not tried to converter.

Q: 3. But, if I have Sony A7S2, can I zoom?

A: With any prime lense you cannot zoom, but the quality is that much better.

Q: 4. Does this product come with both the 90 degree tube and the straight lens tube?

A: Yes, the AstrHori 18mm f/8 90-Degree Direct View Macro Probe Lens (Micro Four Thirds) comes with both lenses.

Q: 5. Does this lens come with a lens hood? I do not see it listed, nor is it an option.

A: Yes it does, a little bayonet mount petal hood.

Q: 6. Does this focus to infinity?

A: yes it sure does! It's a very sharp lens and does focus fast and accurately from about 11.5 inches to infinity. This lens outperforms a lot of others - one of the sharpest sony makes and it's also one of the lowest priced. Can't recommend it enough. I pair it with the ultra wide 21mm adapter and get twice the use out of it. And I'm incredibly picky and a pixel nerd because I'm a retoucher and photographer by trade - so I don't say these things lightly. :)

Q: 7. Is the focusing/aperture action on the FE 28/2 louder than other FE lenses? Or is this unique to the used copy I just purchased? Focusing at f2.0, my copy is surprisingly loud with a bit of vibration/roughness. Its similar to screw drive lenses. Considerably less stealth than any of the other FE lenses I've used (55/1.8, 90/2.8, 28-70 kit). I'm considering returning it, but wonder if another (new) copy would be similar. Others have a similar impression? Any thoughts appreciated.

A: I just tested mine and it is nearly silent - certainly no louder than my 35 or 55, in fact a touch quieter than the 35, but all are very quiet.

Q: 8. Im looking into purchasing a ND filter for this lens on my a7sii so I can shoot in slog2 in the daytime without having over exposure issues. What size filter would be purchased?

A: I use a 49mm UV filter on my lens. Im sure the ND filter would be the same size.

Q: 9. How is this lens for astrophotography?

A: Great lens, very sharp. But most people prefer to have wider than 28mm for astrophotography.

Q: 10. How does this lens compare to the Sony FE 35 f2.8?

A: Hi--it's difficult to compare two lenses with different focal lengths, but these two are somewhat similar in optical quality, with the 28mm lens being somewhat better optically, as well as having a wider maximum aperture of f/2 vs f/2.8 for the 35mm lens.

Fast aperture, fast autofocus and sharp images for 200 grams or so. It looks bigger on the pictures, but performs really well. I use it for video on my Sony A7S II and I call this the Low Light Combo Monster :) F2 is really good for shooting at night and I haven't had issues with autofocus speed even with the A7S II's CDAF. I was used to Nikon DX format so it was a little wider than I expected but in a good way (so much so that I'm planning to use it for vlogging). Anyway, awesome lens for video from my experience.

This lens is always in my bag. I take this and my Sony 24-240 when traveling and find that Im using the 28mm most of the time for landscape and street photography. Its light, its sharp, and it fits my budget. One of the best Sony lens purchases Ive made.

The quality and value of this lense is great. The price was good for its value. I am impressed with Sony effort put on this lense almost close to Zeiss 55 mm. I am looking forward to buy also the Sony 85 mm f1.8.

I bought this to have as a nice walk around lens for my a6500. It performs very well in that regard and is not too big. The sharpness is also very good, no complaints. I like that you can make it wider with the optional Sony attachments (expensive though), but I won't do that unless I also have a FF body someday.

This lens is the perfect mate to the A7 series. The size is perfect, small and easy to carry — ideal for travel.I just took this to New Zealand as my main lens and it covered a lot of ground. It's sharp, focuses quickly, and does incredibly well in low light. It's wide enough for landscapes, architecture and astrophotography, but holds surprisingly well for portraits and groups of people.

I purchased this lens to use on my a7s and gimbal, however I found that it gives an interesting look for photography as well. I've used it in a couple weddings so far and this lens is very sharp and has good auto focus. For video, this is a great focal length for a stabilizer. It is not so wide that you have to stand a foot away from what you are recording and it is not so narrow that you have issues with movement speed. I was considering the 35/2.8, however that extra stop of light is nice for receptions. The lens does have some distortion, however it is to be expected on a wide lens. It doesn't bother me at all and just use it to create more interesting photos.

Clarity across. I was disappointed at first until I realized that not all software reads raw images the same. ACDSee for example opens the raw image but the image is slightly blurred compared to the JPG that I thought I had a camera or lens problem. Then I used Capture One software for Sony Cameras and the images are crisp and clean and when converting from raw to JPG is excellent using Capture One. Just keep that in mind.

Bought this initially to have another wide angle lens to double with my 16mm2.8. Comparing both lenses the 28 is nice and tack sharp. Shallow dof works nicely for closer portraits if needed and the f2 is awesome for astrophotography. Love it

I bought a Sony 24-70 mm for my new Sony 7Rii but it is just too heavy (1.95 pounds) to use as a travel walk around lens. The 28 mm is light & perfect for my needs.

I love the detail on this lens and taking some long exposure with an 8x ND filter the pictures came out great. My zeiss 35mm 1.4 is great but its huge. It's not great walking around with it. I found the color sharp and loads of detail using a full size sensor. Also for food shots, you can get a lot of the scene into the image and then just crop if needed. I think the 28mm is a fun focal length for everyday shooting. I will carry my zeiss 55 for anything more up close. Overall I couldnt be happier.
