Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this a continuous-tone film, or a "lith" type emulsion (very high contrast) for repro work?

A: The Ilford Ortho Plus Black and White Negative Film (12 x 20", 25 Sheets) is Orthochromatic B&W Negative Film. It is high contrast. Ideal for Tech. & Half-Tone Applications.

Q: 2. Is it okay to open the box in daylight? Are the film sheets protected enough inside the wrappers in the box?

A: I would advise against opening a box of film in daylight.

Q: 3. expiry date?

A: B&H buys and sells film in bulk. In general we regularly maintain fresh film stock. All of our film is at least 6 months from expiration (typically much longer). Anytime film stock is less than 6 months from expiration we sell it in a separate section and label it as short-dated film and also price it with a slight discount (again due to the volumes we sell this rarely occurs). Unfortunately we do not have access to our inventory to hand inspect the expiration date of any of our films prior to purchase.

Q: 4. Hi, is this trimmed for use in 4X5 film holders?

A: It is sized as standard 4x5 film for film holders.

Q: 5. manufacturing date ?

A: B&H buys and sells film in bulk. In general we regularly maintain fresh film stock. All of our film is at least 6 months from expiration (typically much longer). Anytime film stock is less than 6 months from expiration we sell it in a separate section and label it as short-dated film and also price it with a slight discount (again due to the volumes we sell this rarely occurs). Q: 6. Will the film give me a positive or a negative of the image?

A: in normal development it is negative, if you really want a positive you can send it to dr5.

Q: 7. First time I've bought film not in a roll. Using it in a pinhole camera. How does it come packaged? Is each sheet in its own lightproof sleeve or is it all bundled in one lightproof sleeve? I ask because I need to put it into 5x7 film holders in the dark and I want to know what to expect. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I have a darkroom with a red light bulb I can dim way down. Should that be okay for processing in trays?

A: Sheet film is packaged in a trip box..... The 25 sheets of film will be in a black plastic bag and then contained within a box with an additional lid. The combination of black plastic bag and the double-boxing keeps the film light tight. Sheet film comes with a notch code in the top corner. If you are loading your holders with the opening flap at the top; the notch code should be in the top right corner when loading. Film is panchromatic so it must be loaded and processed in complete darkness. Your red safelight can only be used when making contact prints.

Q: 8. Will this work in 4 3/4 x 6 1/2 in film holders?

A: This size of film will have to be cut down to the size you need.

Q: 9. It loads the same as conventional 4x5 film, in the film holder?

A: Yes, it loads the same as conventional film.

Q: 10. Does all the film come in a single bag, or are there multiple bags inside of the box of 100?

A: Four bags x 25 sheets each.

HP5 Plus is a specialty film for me. I use it in the studio for portraits under tungsten light. With an ARRI 650 Plus main light and a Smith-Victor, A-80 fill light, I can get a good negative by exposing at f/5.6 at 1/30 second. I can get high-quality, 16 x 20 prints from my 4 x 5 negatives. This set up works for me; why don't you give it a try?

HP5+ works well in every developer I've used, from D-76 to XTOL and now to Pyrocat. It's not easy to find reasonably priced 8x10 film, and it's a format I'm drawn to. I expose this film at EI 200, a function of my testing and a preference for denser negatives that hold detail in shadow areas.
