Tiptop Audio Grain De Folie Granular Synthesis Cartridge For Z-dsp Eurorack Module
- Product Code: ga144133

Generate news sounds from existing material with the Tiptop Audio Grain De Folie, a granular synthesis cartridge with 8 expressive programs, custom designed for the Z-DSP Eurorack effects module. The effects combine multiple grains of differing lengths, amplitude, pitch, and speed to create new sounds, a technique that Xenakis claims to have invented for Analogique A-B, a composition of tiny tape splices of pure tones. This composition is credited as the first piece of granular music back in 1959. You can now experiment with this technique within the confines of your Eurorack modular synthesizer.

- Granular Synthesis uses small slices of sounds (grains) to compose new sounds from existing material.
- By combining multiple grains of differing lengths, amplitude, pitch, and speed, new sounds are created which are often very different from the original sound.
- In the context of the Z-DSP, a block of memory is set to hold digital samples for playback. The Z-DSP has one second of memory for the audio used in processing. From this audio buffer, the grains will be sampled and modified for playback, with the number of grains determining how dense the overall output sounds. These programs have 3, 4, or 6 grains for playback. Each grain plays from a random point in the audio buffer and has an independent envelope controlling its duration. The envelope time is the Grain Size parameter in many of the programs.
Four Spread Grains 1
- Four independent grains have a random playback position with control over the length of each grain and the randomness of the position. Two grains are sent to left output and the other two to the right creating a spatial spread.
Four Spread Grains 2
- Four independent grains have a random playback position with control over the length of each grain and the randomness of the position. The grains all have the same size, which lessens the stereo spread. This program is very useful for rhythmic processing.
Pitch Modulated Grain1
- Four independent grains have a random playback position with control over the pitch of each grain (LFO modulates the pitch). Two grains are sent to left output and the other two to the right, creating a spatial spread.
Pitch Modulated Grain2
- Four independent grains have a random playback position with control over the pitch of each grain. The difference between this and program 3 is that the pitch-shift amount is lower. Two grains are sent to left output and the other two to the right, creating a spatial spread.
Three Pitched Grains
- Three independent grains have a random playback position with control over the pitch of each grain (pitch shift is a fixed amount for all grains). One grain is sent to left output, one to the right, and the third circulates in the stereo field.
Six Grains Stereo
- Six independent grains have a random playback position with control over the size of each grain. The two size controls each set the size for half the grains so two different textures or rhythms can happen at the same time. Three grains are sent to left output and the other three to the right creating a spatial spread.
Three Flying Grains
- Three independent grains have a random playback position with control over the size of each grain and the panning speed. The panning creates a stereo spread.
Three Modulated Grains
- Three independent grains have a random playback position with control over the size of each grain and modulation of the size. Modulation of the size makes the duration of each grain less static for more variation in rhythm and texture. The grains are spread out in stereo.
Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. Can it still produce positives from original negatives. And how would you recommend someone develop this type of film?
A: No, this film is for producing negatives and or internegatives from positive film. KODAK Developer. D-96
Q: 2. Is this film meant to placed emulsion to emulsion with the original? Or some other way?
A: That's used if you are making a contact exposure, but we have found that different customers have different preferences and beliefs with respect to their darkroom processing procedures. We recommend you use the procedure that you find to produce the results you prefer.
Q: 3. Will this charge the battery that came with my GX9?
A: It will fit in this battery charger, but it won't click and lock into place properly so it might fall out. However, all of the pins are the same and it will fit and charge.
Q: 4. Will this charge a battery for leica v lux 5? Thanks
A: The correct charger for the Leica V-Lux 5 is the Leica Battery Charger BC-DC 12 For V Lux 4, BH#LEBCBCDC12V
Q: 5. Will this cartridge work for my Technics SL-Q350 turntable?
A: Yes. This will fit any turntable with a P-Mount stylus.
Q: 6. will this charge a panasonic battery charger nca-yn101g battery?
A: The Panasonic DE-A79BB Battery Charger will charge the Panasonic DMW-BLC12 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery (7.2V, 1200mAh) or any off-brand replica of this battery.
Q: 7. What can this do that a curtain rod cut down to 24 inches and some Unbuffered Interleaving Tissue paper couldn't do for about 30 bucks?
A: Rick - I researched these things (a lot) before buying one (reading blogs, discussion boards, etc), since they are indeed pricey for an apparently simple device. My conclusion was that no one trying the DIY solutions ever created a solution they were happy with. Whereas, the reviews of the real product by actual users seemed 100% positive. I am a pro that often needs to de-curl final prints quickly & reliably. I can't have a home-made de-roller damage a client's print (forcing the time and expense of a reprint). The cost is indeed an ouch, but I am extremely happy with the decision to buy one of these. They work perfectly and (practically) instantly. They are insanely well made and surprisingly a much, much more sophisticated device than everyone imagines. If you are a pro who needs consistently reliable gear that does what it's supposed to, then this (expensive, dumb, well-made) thing is absolutely worth the expense. I hope this helps.
Q: 8. Will this charge a battery for a Lumix LX-10 (battery DMW-BLH7PP)?
A: The Panasonic DE-A79BB Battery Charger is not compatible with the BLH7 series batteries. You can use this Watson charger instead:https://bhpho.to/46z1nf4
Q: 9. What is the ISO of this film ?
A: There is no specified speed/ISO for the Kodak Eastman Fine Grain Duplicating Positive Film #2366 (35mm, 2000' Roll); it is designed for a range of low speeds.
Q: 10. For sound triggering, can you adjust the sensitivity of this device? Also, can you set it to delay the shutter release after it detects the sound? If so, for how long and what increments? Thanks.
A: I have only used the Captur Pro once while target shooting so far but I intend to do so more often. I had some confusion about the sensitivity but that was more not reading the directions carefully first. The lower the number the less sensitive the unit will be and I needed to make sensitivity number very low to react only to the sound of discharge and not wind noise (it happened to be a very windy day and it took a while to get the right setting to compensate for wind moving over the unit). I don't remember exactly the delay setting I used but it was around one or two milliseconds. You will have to play with the timing. The movement of the slide mechanism is very fast but I was able to capture images of spent cartridges being discharged from the pistol. As a side note I also use the unit as a remote for my Canon 60D. The button between the Lock and the Start/Stop buttons is the remote trigger. Hold halfway and it focuses, press all the way down and activates the shutter. Also, as a bonus it works with my old Canon 20D. You have to order the cords separately but they are not very expensive. The other option is to order the remote controllers but I decided not to do that just yet. Hope this helps.
