Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What size should I get for a lens using a 77mm filter, Canon 100-400?

A: Get the 65-89mm OD (outside diameter). I have a 77mm lens and it fits perfectly.

Q: 2. What is the difference between this product and a Neutral Density 5.4 Solar Eclipse Filter besides the price?

A: The difference is safety and your vision! The solar filter is ISO 12312-2 Compliant. The neutral density filter is NOT. Read the ISO Warning on the product. ISO 12312-2 Compliant Warning: Viewing the Sun without proper protection can cause permanent eye damage, blindness, and equipment damage. Always use an approved ISO 12312-2 certified solar filter when observing the Sun through optics or cameras. Never use photographic neutral density filters for direct solar viewing, viewing the sun through an optic, or when using cameras with an optical viewfinder. Ensure the solar filter is ISO 12312-2 Compliant. And buy from a reputable source like B&H. Many of the answers to this question are inaccurate and dangerous. I have flagged those answers to B&H so hopefully those answers have already been removed. When you are looking at the sun either directly or through optics, get your answers from experts in the field.

Q: 3. What would be the best size for a Nikon 18-200 lens? The current screw-on filter is 72mm.

A: Measure diameter at end of lens with out a lenscap. See specs for this filter and see if it slides over your lens.

Q: 4. Can I use this to take photos of the sun for practice of the upcoming solar eclipse?

A: Yes. The DayStar Filters 70mm White-Light Universal Lens Solar Filter can be used for solar photography with or without an eclipse.

Q: 5. Are these left over from 2017? That's the date on the product photo.

A: The DayStar Filters 70mm White-Light Universal Lens Solar Filter (Single, 65-89mm OD), that B&H offers are not left overs at all.

Q: 6. would this filter fit on a Sony SEL1670Z 16-70mm f/4?

A: I agree with Nathan, the 65-89mm filter would be too big unless you wrapped something around the lens first. The Day Star 50mm sounds perfect for your lens. The B&H site is now showing the larger filter as discontinued at this time anyway.

Q: 7. What size should I get for Canon 70-200?

A: If you go to Daystar website or call them on the phone, I think that is where I read that if you have the 77MM pro lens, meaning it is 77MM in diameter then get the 65 - 89 Solar filter. I have the 70-200 F2.8 non IS lens. I did not put it on yet.

Q: 8. Why do you need the filter if you are wearing proper safety glasses?

A: You need the filter to protect your camera's sensor before and after totality. You should remove it during totality. Also, use the camera's display screen and not the viewfinder to protect your eyes.

Q: 9. What size should I get for a Nikon 18-200 lens? The current screw-on filter says 72mm.

A: The 65-80 MM works perfectly on my Nikon with a 72mm lens cap. Since the camera will be pointing UP, it can't just fall off. As to folding the tabs, it doesn't matter which one you start with, just fold down the little tab on the left side first (looking at the word side). The little tab will be at a 45 degree angle, Makes it easier to get the big tab located on the adjacent right side into the notch, then fold the little tab back up to hold the right tab in place.During an eclipse, you want the filter to slip off/on super easy!

Q: 10. What color does the sun appear - blue, yellow, red?

A: The sun's not yellow, it's chicken. - B. DylanActually it looks yellow through the eclipse filter. I've made some packing foam shims to hold it to the lens. It can be difficult to find the sun with your camera. I need a wide open f stop, and 1 or 2 seconds shutter.

Great protection for your lens without degrading the image quality. The Nikon clear filters are made from the same optical glass as the lens elemnts.Beware of counterfeit NC filters from China being sold on e@. Buy from B&H if you want to be sure you are getting the genuine Nikon product!

I use it as lens protector for my 7-200/f2.8 Nikon zoom lens, and effects on lens and pictures are negligible. A bit more expansive than other brands, but I do not want to put any other filters on my prime lens rather than Nikon.

Not much to review about a filter. This is a great filter, optically perfect, slim, no vignette. It seems that there is some discussion about whether or not to use a filter to protect a lens. Is the protection worth some interference by another piece of glass in between the sensor and the subject? In my experience, heck yeah. Why do you think I'm replacing this filter. A scratch on a $ dollar filter or a scratch on the surface of an 80-400. No question for me.

This filter is great! Thin, light & a sharpness to it that far surpasses other filters. We had Hoya for a bit but tried a Nikon filter once for the experience..and then permanently ever after. A terrific buy & a must for every lens.
