Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I use this to take practice photos of the sun for the upcoming solar eclipse?

A: Yes, you can use the DayStar Filters 70mm White-Light Universal Lens Solar Filter can be used to take practice photos of the sun, to get ready for photographing the upcoming solar eclipse. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/tips-and-solutions/how-to-photograph-a-solar-eclipse

Q: 2. I have a 24-120 mm using a 77 mm filter. The lens hood diameter is 110 mm. Should I use the lens hood during the eclipse?

A: It is a matter of opinion but I would recommend using the hood always. Even if the sun is directly in the frame and the hood cannot stop the flares, the hood still provides safety protection in case the camera is dropped. Since the Daystar filter is not large enough for the hood, this screw on ND filter can be used for solar protection instead: https://bhpho.to/2m7h8oX

Q: 3. Can I use this to take photos of the sun for practice of the upcoming solar eclipse?

A: Yes. The DayStar Filters 70mm White-Light Universal Lens Solar Filter can be used for solar photography with or without an eclipse.

Q: 4. would this filter fit on a Sony SEL1670Z 16-70mm f/4?

A: I agree with Nathan, the 65-89mm filter would be too big unless you wrapped something around the lens first. The Day Star 50mm sounds perfect for your lens. The B&H site is now showing the larger filter as discontinued at this time anyway.

Q: 5. Will I need this to take picture of the eclipse with my Sony A99?

A: Absolutely! All cameras risk (will sustain) light sensor damage when imaging the Sun without a proper filter with the exception of the 2 minutes or so of totality of a total eclipse. This only takes place in the ribbon of totality which during the upcoming Aug. 21st event will be only 70 miles or so wide and at very specific times per location.

Q: 6. Why do you need the filter if you are wearing proper safety glasses?

A: You need the filter to protect your camera's sensor before and after totality. You should remove it during totality. Also, use the camera's display screen and not the viewfinder to protect your eyes.

Q: 7. Does this come with a carrying bag?

A: A travel case is not included with the Manfrotto VR PIXI EVO Kit.

Q: 8. What is the difference between this product and a Neutral Density 5.4 Solar Eclipse Filter besides the price?

A: The difference is safety and your vision! The solar filter is ISO 12312-2 Compliant. The neutral density filter is NOT. Read the ISO Warning on the product. ISO 12312-2 Compliant Warning: Viewing the Sun without proper protection can cause permanent eye damage, blindness, and equipment damage. Always use an approved ISO 12312-2 certified solar filter when observing the Sun through optics or cameras. Never use photographic neutral density filters for direct solar viewing, viewing the sun through an optic, or when using cameras with an optical viewfinder. Ensure the solar filter is ISO 12312-2 Compliant. And buy from a reputable source like B&H. Many of the answers to this question are inaccurate and dangerous. I have flagged those answers to B&H so hopefully those answers have already been removed. When you are looking at the sun either directly or through optics, get your answers from experts in the field.

Q: 9. How does this work on uneven terrain? Does the foot pivot?

A: The Manfrotto VR PIXI EVO Kit is designed for flat surfaces and floors. The length and angle of each of the feet can be adjusted to work on slightly uneven terrain, but I would not recommend this tripod for very uneven terrain.

Q: 10. What size should I get for a Nikon 18-200 lens? The current screw-on filter says 72mm.

A: The 65-80 MM works perfectly on my Nikon with a 72mm lens cap. Since the camera will be pointing UP, it can't just fall off. As to folding the tabs, it doesn't matter which one you start with, just fold down the little tab on the left side first (looking at the word side). The little tab will be at a 45 degree angle, Makes it easier to get the big tab located on the adjacent right side into the notch, then fold the little tab back up to hold the right tab in place.During an eclipse, you want the filter to slip off/on super easy!

Had some image deteriation on one of my Nikon lenses due to an inexpensive UV filter. Replaced it with the Nikon NC filter and have perfect performance. It protects the front element of my 70-200mm VR lens with no effect on image quality.

I keep this filter screwed on my lense all the time. This provides a great protection from scratches and dust. Transparancy is amazing. There is no impact on pics taken with this filter

OK, it's just a piece of clear glass, but why put a 15 dollar filter on a 1K lens? It's Nikon, can't tell it is there until you need it.

I wouldn't spend thousands of dollars on a lens and not spend a couple dozen more for a filter to protect it. Every new lens I buy I order a Nikon filter with and as soon as it comes out of the box screw it on. There's no reason a fine lens should ever have a scratch on the front element.

I have these on all my Nikon lenses. It doesn't make sense to pay top dollar for Nikon lenses and then put anything less than Nikon glass on the front as a filter.
