Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How do I know that the lens is made in Portugal or Germany ? You are not stating this detail.

A: The Leica Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH. Lens BH #LE282SM • MFR #11672 that B&H sells are made in Germany.

Q: 2. which leica film bodies has a 28mm window?

A: reference from a Leica forum: The only M-mount viewfinders that showed "what happens around" with a 28mm lens were all on film cameras: the special low-magnification 0.58x finder of the M6 (available a la carte for the M7/MP/current film Ms)

Q: 3. Would this lens be a suitable macro and ultrawide for the Leica SL2-S?

A: Yes, the Panasonic Lumix S 14-28mm f/4-5.6 MACRO Lens is suitable for macro and ultrawide photography.

Q: 4. When using the 28mm lens do you need to use the Leica Universal Wide-Angle Viewfinder for M System. What is this viewfinder typically used for ?

A: The Leica Universal Wide-Angle Viewfinder for M System would not be needed when using this lens on an M series body.

Q: 5. Is this lens fully compatible with film cameras, like the 35mm CL and/or M2, with good results?

A: The AstrHori 40mm f/5.6 Lens (Leica M) is fully compatible with a Leica M2. However, with the Leica CL, an APS-C L mount camera, you will need an adapter.

Q: 6. Is the lens mount user-swappable?

A: Yes, the AstrHori 18mm f/8 Macro Probe Lens (Canon RF) can be put on or removed just like any other Canon RF lens.

Q: 7. There are two versions of the M28 ASPH produced, one in Germany the other in Portugal. Is there any markings or visual clues on the lens that indicates where it was produced ?

A: Aside from the engraving on the bottom of the lens, the price is also less if it's made in Portugal

Q: 8. I am debating to buy either old or new version of this Leica Summicron 28mm lens. The price is about $1000 difference. Can anyone tell me if it is worth to buy the new version?

A: Excellent question. Here's my take I owned the most recent prior version of this lens (the version you're referring to as heavily discounted). I was always very satisfied with that lens. However, when this newest version was announced earlier this year, I took a flyer and sold that lens, anticipating eventually buying this new version. My motivation was based on Leica's statements that they had redesigned the optics for a flatter image more attuned to digital sensors. I own a first generation M Monochrom and recently wanted to do some landscape and ruins shooting, so I purchased this new version of the 28mm Summicron. I have not been disappointed and in fact I have been even more satisfied with this newest 28mm Summicron than the prior version, which as noted I felt was very good. I know this is much more info than you were looking for but when buying a $4K lens it's important to take lots of factors into consideration. The most important factor I think is will this new lens (or any lens) produce the kinds of images you want to take. I do a lot of landscape shots (and LOTS of trees) and the improvement in edge to edge sharpness from f2.8 on up was worth the expense to me. Even at f2, this lens is great but the difference between the two lenses is not particularly noticeable. By f4, watch out! Hope this helps.

Q: 9. Is the aperture ring clicked or de-clicked?

A: The AstrHori 40mm f/5.6 Lens (Leica M, Silver) aperture ring is de-clicked.

Q: 10. Does this product come with both the 90 degree tube and the straight lens tube?

A: Yes, the AstrHori 18mm f/8 90-Degree Direct View Macro Probe Lens (Micro Four Thirds) comes with both lenses.
