Q: 1. I understand some users are having issues with the TB 3 connection dropping some drives randomly. (Note: similar problem existed with TB2 version and certain Macs, I experienced that myself). Has there been any resolution to those connectivity issues?
A: Peter,I had this problem extensively when I first bought the Thunderbay 4 enclosure. But I've since solved the problem. It now has happened only one time since then. Please bear with me while I explain how I fixed the problem. BTW no amount of searching the internet will help you. This took months of trouble shooting to figure out the solution.I have a new (2017) iMac Pro base model. I have the ThunderBay 4 enclosure and an OWC Thunderbolt 3 dock. The dock is used to add some much needed extra ports, most needed was the legacy Firewire 800 of which I have many FW800 external drives. There are two buses on the iMac Pro for the four (4) Thunderbolt ports on the back. The first two ports are on one bus, the last two are on the other bus. Being the neat freak that I am (and why I buy Apple products) I had both the TB4 enclosure and the TB3 dock connected to the last two thunderbolt ports, thus being on the same bus. You cannot do this (why, I don't know). You can check this by clicking on the About this Mac in the (black) Apple menu (top left corner) and then go to System Report. Go to Thunderbolt and you'll see Bus 1 and Bus 2, you'll see what I'm talking about.SOLUTION: You MUST have the TB4 enclosure and TB3 Dock each on it's own bus. So, connect one device to either the first two ports and the other device to one of the last two ports. Since then, I have only had a drive drop once (and that was when I had another external USB-C drive connected to the same bus as the TB4 enclosure). So I would guess this would be a problem on any Mac. Keep the TB4 Enclosure on its own bus and I'm guessing it's fine. So, at the end of the day, it's a GREAT enclosure. Compared to my other RAID drives, it's way quieter! Still some fan noise, but way more tolerable than my Sans Digital 2 bay RAID. The TB4 Enclosure sleeps and wakes with the iMac - Nice!. You do get the SoftRAID software, which is pretty nice. The only issue there is the drives do not show up in the Storage tab of the About this Mac window. So you have to do a Get Info on the drive from the Finder window to see how much storage is available on the drive.Lastly, if you do have an iMac Pro, be sure to contact tech support when you set up the drive. Apple has installed some unique security settings on the iMac Pro that need changed. OWC will be happy to walk you through the fix.Hope that helps.
Q: 2. Is TB3 support Power delivery to MBP?
A: There is only 15W available, so in effect there is no power delivery.
Q: 3. Does the TB3 port supply power to a MacBook Pro?
A: No, it does not.
Q: 4. I have never owned a RAID 5 device before. I will be needing it for large video projects. 1) If a drive goes down will the rebuild automatically happen when a new drive is swapped in? 2) Will this rebuild happen even if the computer I am using at the time doesn't have SoftRaid installed? 3) Will the system be able to continue to run even with one drive down? (While I am waiting for a new drive? 4) How often in your experience has a drive failed?
A: The answer is that if the Thunderbay comes pre-formatted (and it should), then it will work -- you just have to pay attention when the computer warns you there might be a format or journal error on the hard drive and make sure you replace the damaged drive with the exact same model internal hard drive. It's also recommended that you spend the extra money now to purchase that exact internal hard drive now just in case its discontinued later and so you can swap it out immediately if there is a problem. The extra drive is an expense but it's better than losing a project. As an archivist, I would also recommend getting an LTO tape drive for backup, but as a small company, I admit we don't do this while I'm working -- only after a restoration is completed. What I do is duplicate my files out on other hard drive systems for safety. (Yes, I have a lot of hard drives.) I have two Thunderbays and two Mercury Elite Qx2 and only had one of the latter failed so far -- a lost journal -- and Data Rescue software saved everything.
Q: 5. Can these be operated while laid on their side or do they have to remain upright?
A: The OWC Gemini 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 Raid Enclosure is made to operate upright.
Q: 6. Can I use the thunderbay enclosure with several sets of HDDs? for ex. projects 1, 2, 3 on separate multi-HDD volumes I can swap
A: Once configured in a RAID array, drives should not be removed from the enclosure unless absolutely necessary. Changing the order of drives or removing functioning drives while the enclosure is active could damage the array and cause data loss.
Q: 7. Can I install 2 8 tb & 2 3 tb drives and have Raid 1 on each of them seperately? Which version do I need? Can I move over from an old OWC Thunderbolt 2 enclose the hard drives that are set as RAID 1 and 2 new drives of 8 tb but one has DATA & the 2nd 8tb is pending for the Raid 1 setup.
A: You can have two different RAID families in this box, however moving drives from another box with a RAID family already configured may not be compatible.
Q: 8. Can I use my Mac's RAID management in disk utility with this drive?
A: Yes, you can use your Mac's RAID management in disk utilities with this OWC Gemini 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 Raid Enclosure.
Q: 9. Is this Thunderbolt 2? It seems the cable is a regular thunderbolt cable.
A: Yes, it's TB2
Q: 10. I purchased one of these units - along with 4x16TB 3.5inch drives, and am running this in Raid 5. I have filled up the drives and just wandering - Can I purchase 4 new drives and set it up as a fresh Raid-5, but still have the option in the future to plug back in my old drives and access the data? Will the enclosure recognise previously created volumes?
A: In order to create a new RAID setup with the OWC ThunderBay 4 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Enclosure, you will need to purchase the SoftRAID XT software from OWC. That will allow you to have a new RAID setup. But when you put in the old drives, the enclosure will recognize the old drives. Make sure that you number the drives and input them in the same bay as removed.
