The 12TB Red Plus 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD from WD is built to handle the workloads of RAID-optimized NAS systems with up to 8 drive bays, including home offices and power users, small to medium businesses, and consumer and commercial NAS systems. This 12TB drive operates using a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, a 256MB cache, and a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, which all help to ensure uninterrupted data transfers with a rate of up to 196 MB/s. This drive also features high levels of reliability, with 600,000 load/unload cycles, < 1 in 1014 non-recoverable read errors per bits read, a workload rate of 180TB per year, dual-plane balance control technology, and a 1 million hours MTBF. WD's NASware helps increase system compatibility, allowing Red Pro drives to be more easily integrated with your existing network infrastructure, while noise and vibration protection is provided by Rotation Vibration (RV) sensors.

Western Digital's exclusive NASware technology fine tunes drive parameters to match NAS system workloads, which helps increase performance and reliability.

Since your NAS system is always on, a reliable drive is essential. WD Red Plus hard drives are designed for systems that operate 24/7, giving users the confidence of knowing they can reliably access their data.

Western Digital partners with a wide range of NAS system vendors for extensive testing to ensure compatibility with most NAS enclosures.

WD Red Plus drives are engineered to use less power (versus previous models) and run cooler, which reduces operating costs and helps reduce heat in thermally challenged NAS boxes.

Despite using less power, the drives have plenty of bandwidth to handle the mixed performance demands of multi-drive NAS systems.

Hard drives that are not properly balanced may cause excessive vibration and noise in multi-drive systems, which could reduce hard drive life span and degrade the performance over time. WD's enhanced dual-plane balance control technology significantly improves balance and increases overall drive performance and reliability.

Western Digital stands behind their NAS storage solutions with the assurance of a limited 3-year limited warranty and world-class support services for hassle-free data storage.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. will it be compatible with Synology DS415Play?

A: This HDD is compatible with Synology enclosures.

Q: 2. Is the 12TB N300 or a N300 (non pro for that matter) a CMR drive?

A: The Toshiba 12TB N300 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD is a CMR Drive.

Q: 3. Will these work in a Drobo 8D?

A: According to the specifications from Drobo, the maximum volume size for the Drobo 8D is 128TB. This would mean that, theoretically, each bay could support up to 16TB. However, we wouldn’t be able to guarantee a drive like the WD 20TB Red Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD, B&H # WE201KFGXSPB, would work with the Drobo 8D and give you the full 20TB capacity.

Q: 4. what is a 4tb model number?

A: The model number for the WD 4TB Red Plus 5400 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD (BH #WE40EFPXSPC6) is WD40EFPX-SPC6CN0.

Q: 5. Will this work on synology DS423+?

A: Yes, the WD 12TB Red Plus 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD is compatible with the Synology DiskStation DS423+ 4-Bay NAS Enclosure.

Q: 6. I have old PC based on Asus P5B deluxe. Will 12TB WD120EFBX with this MB. if not, what is the largest EFBX I can use?

A: The Asus P5B Deluxe has SATA ports, so modern drives such as the WD 14TB WD140EFGX Red Plus SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD will be backward compatible with it. However, you will not be able to achieve full speeds with modern drives as there is a substantial spec difference between SATA and SATA III.

Q: 7. can this be used as a spare for wd 4100 16 tb?

A: I believe the WD 4100 comes with 5400rpm drives (model# WD40EFRX). They're a little cheaper.

Q: 8. Warranty

A: The WD 4TB WD40EFPX Red Plus SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD (CMR, Retail) is sold with a Limited 3-Year Manufacturer Warranty.

Q: 9. Is this compatible with g-technology g-raid thunderbolt model?

A: Yes, these WD 12TB Red Plus 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD 2-Pack Kit are compatible with the G-Raid Thunderbolt Enclosure.

Q: 10. If I replace the WD Red NAS 5400 RPM drives in a My Cloud EX2 Ultra with these, how much of a performance difference can I reasonably expect to see?

A: Almost no difference, unless you're using these drives as regular OS drives, where application read/write speed is more critical. If building a NAS I would recommend 5400s, the read speed is fine for streaming, they last longer than 7200s on average, and they're usually cheaper. I got these 7200 at a great price, so it made sense for me at the time.

As per the subject; they work as advertised. I purchased a set of 4 as a capacity upgrade to my NAS. The WD Red+ 8TB drives have the capacity I need, and have a bit lower power consumption than some of the others. The upgrade went smoothly, one drive at a time of course. No surprises is good when it comes to storage.

I bought three of these to use in my Synology NAS Disk Station 1517+ to run in Raid Configuration for the purpose of backing up my 5 office computers and my new NAS DS1722+ daily at 4:00 AM. I am using the Synology software program called, Active Backup for Business. This will allow me to do a bare metal restore if any of my backed up units have a catastrophic hard drive failure. The drives are eerily quiet, running cool and just doing their job. My prior 2011 WD Enterprise Series drives were running fine after 95,000 + hours but just did not have enough storage capacity to accommodate my current backup needs. Reasonable price and prompt damage-free shipping too.

Western Digital products hold up better than any other manufacturers hard drives. When you want dependability , when you want your data ready when you are, when you want to safely store data then you should use Western Digital drives.

I installed 2 of these WD RED Plus 10TB drives in my WD My Cloud Ex2 Ultra and set them to Mirror RAID. I reloaded 6 TB of data which took 7 days and the drives worked flawlessly. These drives are quiet, fast and well worth the money. If you have a lot of data to store, I highly recommend these drives for you. My old WD Red 6TB drives worked for 6 years, until I ran out of space, with no problems so, I trust the WD Red drives to hold my data and so should you.

I loaded up a bunch of competitor's 12TB drives in my Synology 1522+ NAS and used it for Apple Time Machine. At that time, I didn't understand that if I had a hot spare, I only needed to implement SHR and not SHR2 RAID, and I wasted an entire drive's worth of space.

Fast forward and I found a cheap DX517 expansion module on an auction site, which I stocked with Western Digital 12TB WD Red drives. I stopped the SMB file services, moved the shared folder to the expansion module, re-formatted the base unit's drives, the moved them back.

No errors and everything is now running again, letting me use the DX517 with the WD Red drives to hold my music and video libraries. Unlike the other brand of drives, the WD Red were verified and are running properly in a minimum of time with a minimum amount of fuss. Will buy again!

Work as advertised, so far so good. I had heard these were noisy drives, but I dont hear a thing. Sometimes when writing large quantities of files it may make a little noise, but otherwise Id never know they were there. Only time will tell how they perform but Im happy with these drives so far.
