This 5 x 5" Tiffen ND Filter is a solid neutral density filter providing a 0.6-stop exposure reduction. This 0.2 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By increasing your aperture or slowing your exposure time, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. This filter measures 5 x 5" / 127 x 127mm.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. 72mm is my biggest lense thread so Ill buy 72mm , but I also have a 55mm lense and 67mm lense which i would use step up rings. How will this variable ND filter fare with the smaller lenses? Will i get bad vigneting or anything else?

A: I've used it on smaller lenses, it works great for me.

Q: 2. Is there a touchbased LIDAR capability to track subjects similar to DJI Pro grip?

A: While the Teradek RT - CTRL.5 does not currently have a Touch to Focus feature, Teradek is planning to include a similar feature on later firmware updates. Whether tracking is included is not known at this time.

Q: 3. Would a 25-30 second exposure of a waterfall be possible on a partly sunny day at f/22?

A: The best I could tell you is to try it and see. It all depends on what partly sunny is. I have used the 1.2 with a 15 second exposure at F16 and got a great result. But that was a cloudy day. Remember that you can always adjust your ISO to 100 to help some.

Q: 4. What's the pitch of the threads?

A: Not sure about "thread pitch" however, I can say that is threads on & off my Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens just fine.

Q: 5. Will this Tiffen ND filter provide true color images? i.e., convey the same color compared to without the ND filter?

A: No, the Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter, will function like a polarizer to achieve the variable effect, which will change the hue of the image, similar to a polarizer.

Q: 6. Can I control camera setup such us ISO and other stuff with the ctrl.5 and the MDRX?

A: Teradek does plan integrations of camera control for ARRI cameras via Wi-Fi on the Teradek CTRL.5 3-Axis Wireless Lens Controller.

Q: 7. does it work with 100X100 Lee Filter Holder?

A: Yup! The Formatt Hitech 3-stop 4x4/100x100mm filter will fit the Lee 100x100 filter holder. This should have no problems fitting into any 100x100 2mm-thick filter holder.

Q: 8. For the 77mm version, is the reported green cast, X uneven fading AND/OR image degradation (softness, etc) starting to appear more easily in 24mm focal length or wider (on Full Frame cameras)? And are those issues appearing WITHIN the Start and End marks? At what point aprox.?Thank you!!

A: What green cast are you referring to? There are no known issues with green cast with the Tiffen VND filter, perhaps you are referring to the IRVND?The X Bar effect is a function of optical physics when combining two circular polarizing filters to make a VND. This effect happens with all manufacturers VND filters and does not indicate a problem with the filter. The X Bar effect typically appears when shooting at wide angle and at higher density settings on the VND filter, you will see this effect appear sooner with a full frame camera than with a cropped sensor camera. To correct this look through your viewfinder and reduce the density on the VND filter, change your focal length by zooming in or a combination of both until the effect goes away. The X Bar effect can happen within the Min and Max settings, especially at darker densities on full frame cameras. You should never adjust the VND outside the Min and Max settings.

Q: 9. Does it have IR protection ?

A: It is not rated for IR, This is a Neutral Density filter, but I yet have to come up an IR issue using it with my Sony A7RII. If you have IR issues with your sensor often like color shifts I suggest you correct those with a proper IR filter first. A Variable Neutral Density filter works by juxtaposing 2 polarizing filters so there is a highly modified light spectrum left, I wonder if you should be worring about IR at the end. Enjoy. This filter is a game changer specially on travel and run and gun.

Q: 10. Will this filter fit the Canon 70-200 lens?

A: The f/4 version, no. The f/2.8 version, yes.

I used this right away. It arrived in a timely manner and packaged securely from bhphoto. Once the ND filter arrived, I took it to the beach to test it out. I shot at mid -day, partly cloudy skies . F/11, iso 50 , 2-5 seconds of exposure (depending on how much ambient light was available, ie : shade etc. ) The Formatt Hitech filter, performed very well. It allowed me to keep an F/11 which kept my photo to be extremely sharp, instead of F/18+ which softens the image a bit. This in turn resulted in a high quality slow exposure shot, with the desirable silky water look. I can't imagine what I can do with it at sunset or in lower light settings. I believe there is a slight color cast towards warms, which I noticed with my other Formatt Hitech Nd filter as well. However this is not a game changer if you shoot in raw. The ND filter also came in a protective sleeve, and is well priced for the quality of product.

This is my second ND 1.2 filter (I also own a Hitech grad filter). Fits the Cokin P holder; no vignetting on my Nikon 17-35mm 2.8. Great product!

I used this to shot a waterfall in the late afternoon and got a nice 8 second shot on iso 100 at f/11. Love this!

Formatt always makes great products, I'm very happy with the results! If you take care of them, they rival glass in quality.

Well I should've gotten at 72 so I have to hold the filter with the camera or tape it every time but other than that its great.
