The NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 (SE) from Nikon is an ultra-compact and lightweight FX-format prime lens with a traditional Nikon heritage design. This Special Edition lens inherits its design from the classic NIKKOR lenses released around the same time as the Nikon FM2 film SLR camera, with features that faithfully reproduce the designs of that time, such as knurling, and a prominent control ring. The lens is designed to be a versatile wide-angle lens well-suited to a range of subjects, including landscape, architecture, and reportage. With an f/2.8 max aperture, this fast, bright lens offers beautiful details at a standard focal length. Complementing the optical design, a multi-focus system, which employs two stepping motors, helps to realize impressively fast, accurate, and quiet focus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to suit both stills and video needs. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings. It makes for a great carry-around lens for spontaneous moments at any time of day.

The position of the focus groups is precisely controlled, resulting in extremely accurate and high-speed AF control

Enables an easy transition from autofocus to manual during AF operation

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Where is this lens manufactured?

A: The Nikon NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 (SE) Lens is currently being made in Thailand. This is as of December 2021.

Q: 2. Is the 100 macro or 50 macro z best for digitizing slides?

A: The Z MC 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens has a shorter focusing distance, therefore it would be better for digitizing slides.

Q: 3. How fast is the autofocus? I use Nikon's 60mm macro for pet photography and I need to know if this new lens will be comparable

A: The autofocus on the Nikon NIKKOR Z MC 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens would be just as fast as the Nikon AF-S 60mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor.

Q: 4. is this a dx or fx lens? it states on your website that it is fx format.

A: This is a full frame format Z mount lens which can be used on both DX or FX Z mount bodies.

Q: 5. Does anyone make a square lens hood that will fit on the 28mm Z mount lens?

A: Nikon NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 (SE) Lens has a 52mm front thread. You can use a low-profile circular or petal shape lens hood. The lens does not have a bayonet mount for a dedicated lens hood nor there is a square lens hood with a 52mm clip or screw-on option.

Q: 6. What lens cap should I buy to replace one I lost?

A: The replacement lens cap for the Nikon NIKKOR Z MC 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens is the Nikon LC-46B 46mm Snap-On Front Lens Cap: https://bhpho.to/4dGGa5T. Or, as an alternative, you can use the Sensei 46mm Center Pinch Snap-On Lens Cap: https://bhpho.to/4f4D4cK.

Q: 7. How does this compare in terms of general practical application to the Z 1.8s 50mm prime lens?

A: You are losing over a stop in comparison to the Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S Lens. If you want to Macro then this is the one you want. If Macro is not that important, I would go with the 50mm f1.8 linked here. https://bhpho.to/3pdkYwJ

Q: 8. Could you use this lens on a Z6II for street photography ?

A: Yes, you can defiantly use this for street photography.

Q: 9. I am a bit confused, it states that it is a DX format lens, but states it is compatible with the Z6/Z7 cameras. Will it function in FX mode on a Z6/Z7 camera? If so, I could see this lens being a nice compact video lens with a gimbal.

A: When using this lens on an FX camera, the FX camera would go into DX mode, and you'd be using the center most portion of the sensor as opposed to the full size of an FX sensor.

Q: 10. See previous questions. Two different answers from "Staff" on FX or DX lens: on FX camera it stays FX sensor or crops to DX size? The lens description is "FX"

A: This is indeed an FX lens.

I am basically a portrait photographer, but I also enjoy the outdoors and adventure wild camping. I've often needed a wide angle lens for many situations but never seemed to have one in my kit.
I was so pleased when Nikon released this Z 28mm and was able to round out my kit. It is a beautiful lightweight addition with beautiful results.

Solid construction, considerably fast auto-focus, razor sharp images, versatile lens. I paired this with my Z6, and I've just fallen in love with photography all over again. It's a great combo and I keep getting amazed and how great the quality of the images this lens produces is.

Geat on FX is amazing on DX Tiny, and cheap It performs consistently with minimal aberration and has a top-notch and quiet autofocus motor making it additionally beneficial to videographers. If you are looking for a lens to fill in the gaps between the other focal lengths or simply want a very affordable walkabout lens for travel and street photography.

Got it a few days ago for my Nikon Z6 II. Kudos to B&H's bombproof packing job. The tiny lens box was wrapped in tons of bubble wrappings inside a box that is eight times larger in size. Thank you, B&H. You're the reason why I always buy from you.

For the lens, I intend to use it as both a walk-around lens for my street photography and webcam for online meetings. First, the look/feel is exactly that of Nikon AI/AI-S lens. The focus ring is as butter, super smooth just as any AI-S manual focus lens. Thank you, Dear Nikon. It's Deja Vu all over again. The 40/2, which I also have, feels totally different now. The 40/2 feels much inferior in the look/feel department compared to the 28/2.8 SE though optically they are on par.

Here's a short unboxing and first impression vid I did the other day:

https://youtu.be/SmdgxTLh_uc

The lens is lighter and little more compact than the 40/2. The glass is superb: fast AF speed, excellent OOF blurs, and no evidence of the nasty curvature issue that Nikon AF-S 28mm f/1.8G is notorious for. I feel this little guy can easily beat the AF-S 1.8 version unless you need to shoot at F1.8.

There are one shortcomings though-F16 is its minimal aperture so its doesn't completely render the classic sunstar that I want to obtain. But that's just my nit-nicking. Besides, how often do I need to obtain a complete sunstar in my shots?

Overall, it's definitely a winner. Make sure get the SE version because the regular version is the one you need to stay away (unless it costs much less).

If you're interested in getting a hood for it, I recommend Sensei Collapsible Rubber Lens Hood II (Standard, 52mm), which B&H also carries. Here's a little review I did for the hood:

Attached three test shots: 1) The Wall Shot; 2) The OOF Bokeh Shot; 3) The Sunstar Shot.

I picked up this lens as an introduction to Z mount lenses and immediately took it on a trip to the beach for a week. I brought along some F mount lenses too but this Z 28mm rarely left my camera. It was well suited for carrying around to capture scenic beach photos. As suggested in other reviews, the Sensei Wide-Angle Rubber Lens Hood (52mm) is a nice accessory for this lens as well.

Sharp lens. Focus fast. Very light. Great pair with my Z6ii. Use 52mm filter so it's small and light for me to carry a CPL and ND1000 filter with me all the time.
