The Canon EF mount Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Lens is a fast standard-length prime designed to achieve high optical performance through the incorporation of both three Special Low Dispersion glass elements and one molded glass aspherical element. These elements, coupled with an advanced optical design, work to minimize sagittal coma flare and chromatic aberrations in order to provide high image sharpness and clarity. The lens' large diameter and floating system also help to correct for vignetting to ensure maintained peripheral brightness. A Super Multi Coating has been applied to lens elements, too, to reduce flare and ghosting for higher contrast and color fidelity.

A Hyper Sonic AF Motor, along with an optimized AF algorithm, produces quiet, smooth, and fast autofocus performance that benefits this lens' use in a wide variety of situations. This AF motor also permits full-time manual focusing control for refined precision by simply turning the focus ring at any time.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens' is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.

This lens has been designed using an advanced optical structure to achieve both high resolution and sharpness along with an aesthetic out-of-focus quality for greater subject separation. A molded glass aspherical element corrects for sagittal coma flare and enables full use of the fast f/1.4 maximum aperture with maintained sharpness and clarity. This design also works to minimize vignetting, color blur, and other distortions help to produce natural and pleasing bokeh for selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques. By reducing these aberrations, this lens is also well-suited to astrophotography or other situations with point-light sources due to its ability to suppress blur near the edges of the frame.

Three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements have been incorporated within the lens design to correct for axial chromatic aberration throughout the entire focusing range. This helps to ensure maintained image sharpness, clarity, and contrast regardless of focus point or aperture setting.

In designing the lens with a large 85.4mm diameter, and placing the widest elements within the front group, greater peripheral brightness is more easily attained when working with larger apertures. This design also lends itself to minimizing vignetting throughout the aperture range for greater clarity and detail across the image frame.

A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.

By employing a floating system, the distance between glass elements is adjusted during focusing in order to limit the amount of lens movement required when shooting. This floating system helps to realize a minimum focusing distance of 1.3' with a maximum magnification of 1:5.6. Additionally, this design also contributes to high detail rendering capabilities throughout the entire focusing range.

The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.

  • A rounded nine-blade diaphragm helps to produce an attractive out-of-focus quality.
  • The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. The outside of the lens barrel is also engraved with the year of production.
  • The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability.
  • The included lens hood is fitted with a rubber connection for a secure fit.
  • This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. does this lens work on the Nikon D750?

A: Yes it does

Q: 2. My Canon Mark III and also My canon rebel T3i?

A: All Sigma DG lenses fit on all Canon Bodies with EF Bajonet.

Q: 3. Any reviews out there comparing this to the 55 1.8? I feel like for the same price, this lens has strong competition.

A: These are both excellent lenses where the decision comes down to you and your photography needs. In comparing the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Sony E vs the Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA Lens, we feel you will get a sharpness increase as compared to the Sony but at the price of increased bulk. Even so, the Sony/Zeiss is no slouch for it is an excellent lens that is a pleasure to use since it is not too big/heavy and it has a smooth turning focus ring. So as mentioned, we think it comes down to what is best for your photography. Did you need a fire-breathing hot-rod lens or a sublime sedan lens to get you where you want to go?

Q: 4. Will this lens work with my Canon T1i?

A: Yes, the lens will fit your camera and work fine. Because the lens is designed to be used with full-frame camera sensors, rather than the APS-C sensor on the T1i, it won't be a normal perspective (like what the human eye sees) but will instead be slightly telephoto - similar to a 75mm lens on a full-frame camera.

Q: 5. What would you suggest to buy for portrait shots and full body shots? The Sigma 35mm 1.4 or the Sigma 50mm 1.4? I want my object to be sharp and have a good bokeh in the background.

A: I'm only an amateur photographer, but my understanding is that an 80mm lens on a full frame sensor is the gold standard for portraits. So the 50mm 1.4 sigma should work for both portraits and full body shots and produce good bokeh.

Q: 6. Will this work on my 6D?

A: Yes. This lens will work on full frame cameras like the Canon 6D.

Q: 7. What adapter do I need to make this lens work with the Canon EOS R?

A: You will need the EF/EF-S to EOS R adapter, please click the link below to view; https://bhpho.to/2MENgLL

Q: 8. is this compatible with Nikon D60?

A: Yes. The lens is designed for Nikon's full frame cameras but will work perfectly well on your D60 which has the smaller DX sensor. However the lens will act like a 75 mm focal length lens (1.5 X 50 mm), which could serve as a perfect portrait lens. The lens is very sharp even when at full aperture and displays a wonderful bokeh.

Q: 9. Where to get the Sigma calibration dock?

A: Hi Viktor, sorry for the late reply here but I have done some research on the calibration dock as well and have found it to be more of a gimmick than actually useful. I would suggest to use the lens as is out of the box and if you find it front/back focusing at all, you can calibrate it in-camera and your problem (if there was any) would be solved. For what it's worth, I found that my Sigma 50mm 1.4 art was front focusing a bit on my D4 so I calibrated it, in camera to -4 and it's perfect. Hope this helps.

Q: 10. This lens is good for wedding photography ?

A: This is an excellent lens for wedding photography due to its fast autofocus and wide aperture.

This is by far the best lens I have used to date for Portraiture. I shoot newborns, children, and adults and love how crisp and clean these photos come out.

Using this on my Canon 5DSr gives me the most perfect sharpness at maximum resolution. Only paralleled by extremely high end manual focus lenses, this lens blows Canons own 50mm out of the water. The weighty and solid construction makes me feel like it will be in my camera case for a long time.

I got the lens for my wedding photography business. I mainly use the lens for head shots, portraits, beauty shots and getting ready shots. I love the wide aperture that is perfect for low light situations and the bokeh effect. It is affordable compared with the Canon L counterpart.

I decided on this lens over the Canon 1.2 based on various great reviews and comparisons I read. It is a little heavier than I expected and that's been my biggest adjustment with it. Sharpness and image quality however has been a vast improvement over my previous Canon 50mm 1.4 (da) so I'm pleased with that. We'll see how durable it is as I get further into shooting season.

I've never been impressed by my old Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens but saw no reason to pay the big bucks to upgrade to the L lens. Then I read an article about this lens and research images others were creating with it. I was intrigued. So I took the plunge and ordered one along with the USB Dock. I was concerned about focus speed and was pleasantly surprised to find zero problems in that area. This lens is well made, great color reproduction, great focus speed and works well in low light. This lens has not been off my camera since I unboxed!
