A: Yes, the WD 6TB Elements Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive would work with Mac. You would have to format the hard drive first. This cane be done in disc utility.

A: According to the manufacturer all current versions are SMB 2 or newer.

Q: 5. Is it easy to reformat this for a mac? How long does it take?

A: Very easy should not take more than a few Minutes. Plug in the drive on a MAc, Open DIsk Utility. Choose your external drive from the left sidebar, and click Erase. Give your drive a name and select the file system you want from the Format drop-down. I suggest ExFat Click Erase, and the system will reformat your drive.

A: According to the manufacture, the Buffalo 8TB DriveStation Duo should work with larger drive sizes, but they have not tested it with any drives other than the ones that ship with the enclosure, so there is currently no hard line spec on larger drive capacity, and, they also have said that removing the origional drives may void the warranty, so while we believe you could use 18TB drives in this enclosure, it may not be the best enclosure for the job.

Q: 8. Does the drive have to be upright to use it or can I lay it sideways while in use?

A: The WD 16TB Elements Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive can work in either orientation.

Q: 9. does this hard drive support Linux?

A: With reformatting the WD 4TB Elements Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive can be used with Linux operating systems.

Q: 10. Do I need a backup replacement drive available in case one of the 4 drives fails so I can do a fast recovery to full operations? If so what would I order?

I have three (3) of these WD external backup drives, the oldest dating back nearly 8 years (it's a 6 TB unit). All are still in use, which speaks to the reliability of this brand. 5

If you need a thing that does the thing, then this is your thing. It's not flashy or fast or particularly durable (seeming). But it's an affordable drive that mounts and holds lots of data. I'm not sure how well I would trust keeping incredibly important footage on here long term or cutting off of it, but it's great for temporarily transferring footage to a client or being a redundant system. I've used other sizes for years and been fine with them. 5
