Keep your important videos, photos, and other large files close at hand with the MiniPro RAID V4 16TB 2-Bay USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 Portable SSD and RAID Array from Oyen Digital. Inside the compact aluminum enclosure are two 8TB 2.5" solid-state drives, giving you 16TB of total storage that you can configure for RAID 0, 1, or JBOD modes. No additional software is required. Simply set the rear DIP switches for your desired mode, then format the drives on your computer.

The MiniPro RAID V4 connects to USB 3.2 Gen 2 compatible computers using its included cables, offering exceptionally fast performance while the silicone sleeve helps to protect it from impacts. No drivers are required for Windows, Mac, and Linux systems. Its rear panel also includes a convenient USB Hub, comprised of one 10 Gb/s USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port and a 5 Gb/s USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 port, which allows you to connect peripherals and daisy chain additional MiniPro RAID V4 enclosures. The installed drives are preformatted for exFAT for Windows and Mac and are set for JBOD mode, where the drives are recognized separately. You can power through the USB-C host port or use the included power adapter. USB-C and USB-A cables are included.

Doubling the speed of its predecessor, USB 3.2 Gen 2 features a maximum throughput of 10 Gb/s when used with compatible devices.

RAID 0 (Striping) combines data evenly across both drives simultaneously, dramatically increasing performance. RAID 0 will be viewed as one single storage unit. If one disk in the RAID system fails, all data stored on the installed disks will be lost.

RAID 1 (Mirroring) consists of two drives storing duplicate copies of the same data. In this mode, the data is simultaneously written to both drives. The speed of operation is slow in comparison to RAID 0, but if one drive fails, no data is lost. Simply replace the failed drive. The total capacity is equal to one drive. For example, if installing 2 x 1TB drives, the total capacity will be 1TB.

JBOD (Clear) is simply a collection of drives that are recognized as separate drives by the OS. JBOD provides no performance increase or redundancy. This is the default setting.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. If I buy 2TB model, then can I change 2TB HDs for HDds with more capacity, 10-16TB?

A: You can swap the drives on the OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual enclosure.

Q: 2. If one of the drives goes bad, will I be able to open the enclosure, replace the drive, and have the RAID rebuild the backup given I have it set to Raid 1?

A: Yes.

Q: 3. I want to use this as a storage drive and for backup of my photos on a Windows 8.1 pc with a capacity of 1.8 TB and only 620GB used now. Is this ready just to plug in and use? Easy to use?

A: You might need to change the RAID mode depending on your needs but the drive is easy to use.

Q: 4. What is the read/write speed?

A: 397 Read 389 Write via USB 3.1 using the AJA System Test.

Q: 5. Can the USB-A and USB-C hub connectors in the back both be used at the same time?? Or is it just one at a time??

A: The USB A and USB C ports labeled HUB on the back of the Oyen Digital MiniPro RAID V4 16TB 2-Bay USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 Portable SSD & RAID Array (2 x 8TB), B&H # OY2RV4SS16T, could be used at the same time. Keep in mind that these ports are just a USB hub so in order for you to use them, the USB C port labeled Main would need to be connected to the computer. You could then use the USB A or USB C ports for other USB Accessories. This would not allow you to use the drive between two computers at the same time.

Q: 6. Are the drives removable? (I want to mirror the drives and have a third copy in the safe as an archive.)

A: Not without completely disassembling the box. I would recommend and hot swap HD caddy like New Technology Voyager and mirroring software like Synchron.

Q: 7. What brand of hard drives are inside the glyph raid unit ?

A: Glyph Technologies do not publish the brand of drive they have installed.

Q: 8. Is Glyph going to offer a Thunderbolt 3 RIAD anytime soon?

A: Hi Dennis, you would have to query Glyph on this.

Q: 9. When these drives are full, will I be able to put new drives in and continue to use the enclosure for a new Raid?

A: Yes, you can install new drives and create a new RAID volume.

Q: 10. Can this be used to backup a synology nas?

A: As long as the total amount of data can fit on the OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual 36TB 2-Bay USB 3.2 Gen 2 RAID Array with 3-Port Hub (2 x 18TB), you can use it to backup the data from a NAS.
