Bring a natural and transparent sound to your varied stereo recording duties with this matched pair of VM-44 Classic mics from MILAB, two professional small-diaphragm condensers ideal for transient-rich sources like acoustic guitar, piano, and drums. With its finely tuned frequency response and discrete design, the VM-44 excels in the studio and on stage.

The cardioid pattern helps you stay focused on your intended sound sources, but the capsule can also be exchanged with optional omni and supercardioid alternatives (available separately). With the -12 dB pad, the VM-44 can handle up to 140 dB SPL, providing enough headroom for a wide range of acoustic or electric sources. This matched pair of VM-44 Classic mics includes two shockmounts, two foam windscreens, and a custom SKB 3i case for transport and storage.

The handmade, small-diaphragm condenser capsule in each of these VM-44 microphones is wonderfully transparent and handles fast transients and high-frequency content like few competitors. It has a beautifully straight frequency curve with a presence peak around 10 kHz, which makes the VM-44 ideal for almost any sound source, but especially for acoustic instruments where it absolutely shines.

If the cardioid pattern is not for you, the VM-44 supports several optional alternative mic capsules. Replace your cardioid capsule with the omni capsule for wider pickup, ideal for room mic duties on ensembles for example, or go even more directional with the supercardioid capsule, perfect for dialogue capture in TV and film when boom mounted. The capsule can be replaced in seconds by simply unscrewing the threaded element.

The VM-44 is just as home in a studio as on stage, and thanks to its small size it's easy to place exactly where you want it without being in the way. The natural sound and discreet appearance have made the VM-44 range very popular among TV studios around the world.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will these be better for indoor dialogue than an rode ntg 2 ?

A: Only in one regard. The NTG2 is a shotgun microphone, which means it is directional because it has an interference tube. Surfaces nearby (such as a ceiling several inches away) that reflect sound can defeat the interference tube, causing more background noise than expected to be recorded. For this reason, shotgun microphones are discouraged for indoor dialog. The C02 does not have an interference tube, so it does not have this problem. It is very directional, and it is a good fit for using on a boom for indoor dialog, even near sound-reflecting surfaces. That said, both the C02 and the NTG2 are a little weak in their ability to pick up the lowest and highest sound frequencies, but the NTG2 seems to be a little better in this regard.

Q: 2. Does this mic record to three tracks; the mid to one, and the stereo side to two? If not, how would one go about mixing dialogue with ambient sound in post?

A: It is only 2 tracks. The mono mic will pick up the dialog as any shotgun would straight ahead. Then the desired amount of side can be mixed in accordingly.

Q: 3. Can these take batteries, or is it phantom power only?

A: These small diaphragm condenser microphones require +48 volt phantom power, and do not have a battery power option.

Q: 4. How well would these work on a boom mount in a home studio, plugged directly into a Blackmagic Pocket 4K?

A: You could only plug 1 of these mics directly into the BMPC camera since it only has 1 xlr connection providing phantom power. You would also need an adapter cable to make that connection, BH #CACTF3MT3220. As long as the mic is within 3' of the person speaking, these would work fine.

Q: 5. which one of these Rycote shock mounts are best for Sennheiser MKH 50?

A: You can use the Rycote INV-7 InVision Microphone Suspension for Stand and Boompole Mounting (B&H # RYINV7) or Rycote InVision INV-HG mkIII Microphone Suspension - Lyre Shockmount (B&H # RYINVHGMKIII) with the Sennheiser MKH 50. The MKH 50 is 150mm long and the INV-6 accommodates mics that are less than 120mm long, so the INV-6 won't work. The INV-7 is for mics that are longer than 120mm and the INV-HG is also suitable for the MKH 50.

Q: 6. What shock mount would you recommend for these mics?

A: Here's one good option BH #AVSSM. Please note, if placing this on a boom pole, you would also need a 3/8'' to 5/8'' adapter like this B&H # AUADCOMBOS.

Q: 7. What is the distance between the two lyres? I've heard its 1 , but just wanted to confirm that before I buy one :)

A: Thank you very much for the quick responses :) I plan on using the INV6 with my Schoeps active bars! But I'm in the process of making my own PAS(Point At Stacks) active bars out of 20mm delrin and 3/8 stainless steel threaded rods as well, and just wanted to know the distance between the lyres so that I can make a super small PAS bar! I was going to make my smallest PAS bar about 1 1/4 long, so this will be perfect! And then I'm going to make a few at DINa/DIN/NOS spacing as well to use with my NBob SGC Clips(custom Schoeps SGC clips that are made from delrin and aluminum bases)! So this INV 6 will be absolutely perfect! So thanks again for the answers fellas ;)

Q: 8. What could I use for wind protection for this? Something like a rycote is preferred.

A: If being used on stereo bar for a Spaced Pair or ORTF setup, you could use two of the Rycote Baby Ball Gag's and their additional windjammers, B&H # RYBBG20 and BH #RYBBGWJ. If looking to do an XY inside of a blimp, the closest option we offer is the Rycote Stereo Cyclone Kit 1,B&H # RYCXYK1. However please note it is sized for a 3'' in length mic and the KSM are 5.75'' and may not fit properly.

Q: 9. what is the weight without the brass adapter?

A: Less than .25lbs.

Q: 10. The exact diameter and length of the mic isn't listed. I'm trying to find a foam screen for this mic. I'm aware the mic comes with a windscreen. Can anyone help me out?

A: The Zoom SSH-6 has a 1 diameter. It is also about 6 long. The Auray WSF-2216 (B&H # AUWSF2216) is currently the best available option. It is a bit longer than 6 , which means you will probably have to cut it slightly to fit the microphone.
