The XIO 9010DEC-4AUD-1U Composite to SDI Converter Audio Embedding for XIO Series Frames is a modular expansion board that fits the 1RU height version of the XIO frame. It converts analog composite video in the NTSC or PAL standard to SDI and features two SD-SDI outputs. In addition, this model will embed two channels of analog audio in the SDI stream.

Q: 1. Can I use this device to get stereo audio output from my Panasonic TV HDMI output? I have no other way to hook the audio from my TV to my stereo system. I've tried optical DACs that say they will work but they don't.

A: The HDMI jack on the TV is very likely an input, not an output. It is intended to connect FROM a cable box, DVD player etc. TO your TV and not the other way around. Your television probably has analog audio out jacks (red and white), an optical digital output and maybe a coax digital output (orange). Your owners manual will identify the input and output jacks and they should be labeled HDMI 1 in or audio out or similar wording. The red/white should almost certainly connect your TV to the amp or better, connect one of the cable box outputs to the amp.

Q: 2. What is the part number for a replacement 5v power supply?

Q: 3. what happen if just only audio input without video input. Could audio input Embed to SDI output without video?

A: With no SDI Video input, an output will be generated but you will not have control over the resolution and rate.

Q: 4. has anyone powered this unit with USB power instead of plugging it into the wall? Does it need to be plugged into the wall?

A: Hi Mark. The unit requires a 5 volt DC source at 2 amps. Any power supply of 5 volts DC with at least a 2 amp rating will power the unit. So, if you have a USB power supply of 5 volts that can supply the amp rating it should work. Please be aware of the polarity of the power supply you are using. And no, I have not tried powering the unit from a USB port or power supply, but it is a good question.

Q: 5. I would like to derive audio wordclock from HDMI. My ADC will accept AES as wordclock. Can I use this with CONVMBHS24K6G "HDMI to SDI 6G Mini Converter" to embed silent audio (perhaps from unconnected analog inputs?) and then extract the silence to use as wordclock with this device?

A: I'm not sure if it is necessary to feed silent audio but you certainly can. If there is no audio on an SDI track the AES audio out will be silent.

Q: 6. I see there are mini switches on this, what numbers to do you have on?

A: Hi Maria -Assuming that you want Analog audio out, leave all the DIP switches off. If you want digital audio out (AES) the switch positions are silkscreened on the unit. Just a note: Some Blackmagic mini converters use one switch for processing on or off which you'll need in the on position for the unit to work. This doesn't apply to this one (SDI to Audio) but to some of the others available in this product line.

Q: 7. Anyone use this on the newer samsungs with the stupid junction box? Every other converter I've tried wont work with it so I'd rather know before wasting time and money.

Q: 8. What is the latency between the SDI video and analogue audio?

A: According to Blackmagic Design, the Mini Converter SDI to HDMI has a delay of less than a single line of video, except when it needs to convert PsF to P, which will take one frame. The Analog to SDI has a four line delay.

Q: 10. Does this work with HDMI 24p input?

A: No, it needs a HDMI 30i signal.

We recently updated master control and our new system has embedded audio, but sometimes you need to take a source that's not embedded and this converter takes the hassle out of embedding the audio, it's easy to use and does a great job. 5

We recently upgraded our church video system to HD. New cameras, switcher, projectors, network and displays We needed a way to embed audio from our main audio console into the network which feeds 20 displays in rooms and lobby locations. This little box was the problem solver. Took it out of the box, plugged it in between the switcher output and the first splitter, and we had clean audio at all locations. I did have to call Blackmagic support regarding DIP switch settings. All the diagrams show the switches in the UP position for ON and in the DOWN position for OFF. However, the actual DIP switch is the reverse of that. However, in our case, we didn't have to make any switch settings, it worked out of the box. 5

This product works right out of the box, exactly as described. We use this when connecting a couple of cameras and a laptop to a switcher. The audio feed goes into the Blackmagic converter, and the output of the video switcher goes into the converter as well. In this configuration the Blackmagic passes the switched video and the incoming audio. It works well. One little gripe: the underneath side of the converter shows the dip switch selection, but the actual dip switches on the side are upside down from the selection diagram. But it does work! Excellent price for such a problem-solver! 5
