While it does look pretty stiff from the photos, mine have been sturdy but not stiff. Also, I haven't found the edges to be rough nor sharp. These are also pretty lightweight when empty. I would recommend making sure they are closed properly so no dust gets in. It's actually pretty easy to close, it's just that you have to be sure you line up the cover to close over to the back side of the case.
