Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Could this rail be used with a bmpcc 4k, a tilta cage, and a v-mount battery and plate? I want to try taking videos using a 5:1 micro lens and I just wanted to know if I could use this rail system with my camera setup? If this rail wouldn't work for me, what rail would I need?

A: It would support that setup, but I'd recommend only using the BMPCC4K + cage, and positioning your v-mount battery and plate off rig, maybe rigging them up to the tripod rather than to the cage. If you need more strength, consider stacking two Manfrotto micrometric focusing rails instead: https://bhpho.to/3zwYevt

Q: 2. Does this come with an Oben (or Arca) quick release plate?

A: It is an Arca type plate made by Oben.

Q: 3. WHAT IS THE WEIGHT LOAD CAPACITY OF THE MACRO RAIL (not the weight of the rail)?

A: The load capacity of the Kirk LRP-3 Multipurpose Rail (7.5"), B&H # KILRP3, is 100 lb.

Q: 4. Can I mount this on my Manfrotto XPro 3-way head?

A: Since this rail has a 1/4-20 thread at the bottom, you can attach it to a head like a Manfrotto XPro 3 way head.

Q: 5. The top rail, which I think is for side to side movement, makes a clack sound for every turn of the knob. The sound happens for one way only.Is this normal? Is there a way to stop it?

A: The top rail is for forward/back movements and while I don't get the clack sound you mention it is definitely is not as smooth as the bottom rail which is for side to side movements. This is due to the different gear mechanisms used for each, I think it would be a better focusing rail if they had used the same gear on the top rail as the the bottom as it is butter smooth. What I did find with mine is that the end apps that hold the rails in position were loose and nothing on the tool they provide will tighten them.

Q: 6. How is this rail for focus stacking?

A: You set a manual focus and then take multiple pictures, each time turning the slider a few millimeters forward between pictures. This gives you a series of pictures each focused on a different plane. The rail ensures the series of frames has minimal differences in framing so all the pics line up. You then use stacking software e.g. Helicon or photoshop to stack the pics combining each in-focus plane creating one picture with increased depth of field. The rail works reasonably well for the price btw. There is some movement but for beginners in macro it works well.

Q: 7. Will this rail accommodate Manfrotto's 200PL quick release plates?

A: No, the 200PL quick release plate does not fit.

Q: 8. does the lower rail have a groove compatible with attaching to an Arca Swiss clamp?

A: Yes the lower rail on the Kirk FR3 Focusing Rail with Bag is Arca Swiss style. So, it can attach to an Arca Swiss style clamp.

Q: 9. This rail can be mounted on a common tripod screw?

A: Yes.

Q: 10. does this fit manfrotto MVH 502AH?

A: Not by design. The Kirk LRP-3 7.5" MPR uses the arca-swiss style dovetail/system. You will need to mount this to a Manfrotto 500-series plate in order for it to slide into the MVH502AH.
