A: This handle DOES need a battery if you're using it with a RED camera. It is a 14250 battery. My local Batteries and Bulbs store had them in stock for 12.00 USD each. You can also get them on Amazon.

A: This unit works like a charm on both the a6300 and a6500 (I have both). The cable that comes with the unit plugs into the camera's micro usb port and allows control of the record on/off function via the Tilta handles green start/stop button.
