Spanning a convenient 70-200mm equivalent focal length range, the redesigned Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 35-100mm f/2.8 POWER O.I.S. Lens from Panasonic is a telephoto zoom designed according to Leica's strict quality standards for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Working in conjunction with the versatile portrait-length to telephoto focal length range is a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture that benefits working in a variety of lighting conditions as well as affords notable control over depth of field. A pair of extra-low dispersion elements and one ultra extra-low dispersion element are featured within the optical design to reduce fringing and chromatic aberrations, and an anti-reflective coating inside the lens barrel has been added to the original Nano Surface Coating that has also been applied to suppress ghosting and flare even under strong light sources. Complementing the advanced optical design, this lens also features a POWER Optical Image Stabilizer, which is compatible with Dual I.S., and a linear autofocus motor that offers quick, quiet, and near silent focusing performance to suit video and stills applications. Additionally, this 35-100mm lens also sports a dust, splash, and freezeproof physical design to enable working in trying environmental conditions.

The Panasonic rep said it is good for video. Some people have hoped that it will remain 2.8 until ... mm NO. Does not work that way.

Q: 8. Is the smooth aperture changes so there are no sudden jumps in exposure compatible with the GH4 ? I got it to work on my GH5 by setting auto-exposure mode and blocked ISO and Shutter Speed, but it doesn't seem to work on my GH4.

A: The Panasonic GH4 when using some of the newer lenses, works better in an "M", or "P" mode.

Q: 9. Will all of automatic the features on this lens work with the JVC Gyls300? And is there a crop factor with this and the JVc?

A: Yes, this lens should work with the LS300's auto focus. The lens is meant to cover a Micro Four Thirds sensor, so it will have a 2x crop factor and be the 35mm equivalent of a 24-120mm lens.

Q: 10. Are the optics of this lens going to be on par with the 12-35mm 2.8 previous gen? That is an amazing lens, but the zoom on this thing is tempting cause 35mm isn't enough.

A: I have both lenses, and the new lens is a bit better. It's equally sharp, with better color rendition and does not cause sun flare to become green and purple blobs.

Been shooting Nikon equipment since the early 70's. Good Nikon equipment is great, but heavy. Lately I've been looking for a lighter camera without sacrificing flexability or Image quality. The Olympus Mirrorless camera came close to satisfying that objective, and the Leica / Panasonic F2.8 lens puts the combination over the top. It's macro capability will handle most field requirements. Greater macro capability results in greater weight. The 5:1 zoom provides very good image quality (hand held) across a very handy image range. Very low (to no) noise when shooting at ISO 1600. Quality at higher ISO values will depend on the image objectives.

I’ve been taking and making photos since the black and white film days. In those days i had to carry around a huge camera bag full of prime lenses. I wouldn’t dream of using a zoom lens, Not true nowadays! My wife just got this lens for me, it arrived today and I took a few snap shots around the yard and house.WOW! At 100% crop I could see my own reflection in my subjects eyes! I took some snaps of cherries on the try and at 100% crop could see the reflection of the sky and other trees close by! Mind you, these are just snap shots, not posed or planned studio shots, can you image what those will look like!

Magnificent lens on the micro four thirds lens. I began to use this the first day it came out in place of the 12-35 f2.8. For video, its incredible stabilization combines with in camera on GX8 stabilization to give a jitter free hand held video recording evem at maximum zoom. The extra length of the zoom range is a welcome addition and minimizes lens swapping.

Light, Sharp and powerful. As a wild filmmaker i can say that This Tool fits perfectly with mi Lumix GH6. The 2.8 range from 35 to 100 brought me back to Lumix long lenses. You can feel The sharpness Lumix style abd The Leica signature in every single take. It worth for me.

What makes this focus-by-wire lens so fabulous is how you can now activate a menu setting in the GH6 and G9 II which allows you to turn the focusing ring into a linear focus lens like a cine lens so you can have repeatable focus! Plus, you can assign various degree turns for quick or longer throw focus. I'll be reaching for this lens way more than my proper cinema lens!

Compliments my LUMIX Leica DG 12-35 quite well with my GH6 video setup. Good AF and IQ with no complaints.

I have been using this lens on a GH5 for about a year. The zoom range, coupled with the GH5 2x tele conv option, allows me to quickly adjust for unexpected photo opportunities. Panasonic's power-OIS makes up for the 2.8-4 max aperture. Image quality is exceptional. The lens is solid with smooth zoom and silent focus.

(Camera: Olympus EM1 mkii; Hoya HD UV filter) The lens arrived this afternoon, and the attached photos are examples of how it performed in the bright mid-afternoon sun. The lake photo was shot at 12mm f11and the flowers at 60mm f4. The lake photo had to be straightened; otherwise there are no corrections to the raw files, which I exported as jpegs. The lake photo is beautifully sharp corner to corner and side to side. The sun flare has only a mild color cast. The lens is very well-balanced on the camera, looks good and handles well. Before I ordered this lens I tried the new Olympus Pro 12-100 f2.8-4 (which I returned to the local store). I am accustomed to Panasonic lenses, specifically the GX 12-35 2.8 and the G 14-45 3.5-5.6. At f11 the Olympus had noticeable diffraction, and at 12mm wasdefinitelysofter than the Panny lenses, although it performed beautifully at wider apertures. Like the G and GX lenses, the sun flare was very brightly colored. The images from the Olympus lens were also softer (at 12mm) along the right side compared to the rest of the frame. This is my dream lens; I'm very, very happy!

This lens is what I would expect from anything bearing the Leica name. It's fast, focusing is consistent, and it delivers sharp images.

The feel is solid, with excellent haptics for the controls. It's not light, especially after a kit lens, but the weight is comfortable for anything but extended handheld use.

Other reviews have commented that the color palette skews very slightly red: I cannot confirm that yet but first impressions are that is correct. This is easy to offset (or exaggerate, depending on your style) in-camera with color profiles.

My one peeve is that the aperture narrows so quickly: by 20mm or so 4.0 is as wide as you can get. Bokeh from this lens is next to impossible. It's leaps and bounds above the kit lenses, though, and the OIS goes a long way toward offsetting the aperture shortcoming.

I would recommend this for any MFT shooter.
