Building off the success of its predecessor, this iteration of the mega-zoom, Micro Four Thirds Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400mm f/4-6.3 II ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens from Panasonic features the ability to expand the zoom range when paired with the optional 1.4x and 2x teleconverters while shaving off more than a centimeter of length for a more compact form factor. The lens now offers macro capabilities, with a full-frame equivalent magnification of .5x that is expandable to 1x with the optional 2x teleconverter. The lens retains its Leica branding, with an optical design employing aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements to significantly reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range for a high degree of image clarity and sharpness. The POWER O.I.S. system also benefits image sharpness, minimizing the appearance of camera shake when shooting at longer focal lengths with its compatibility with Lumix G cameras' Dual I.S. function.

Operability has also improved with the introduction of a zoom limit switch on the lens body, improving the focus limiter function even further. The body's gapless construction that renders it dust- and moisture-resistant has an added level of freeze resistance, expanding the lens' field-readiness. And while its lightweight, compact form factor is suitable for handheld shooting, the 100-400mm f/4-6.3 also features a removable rotating tripod collar for fast switching between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations when working atop a monopod or tripod.

  • Telephoto zoom designed for Micro Four Thirds system cameras, this lens offers a 200-800mm full-frame equivalent focal length.
  • Compatibility with the optional 1.4x and 2x teleconverters pushes the 35mm equivalent lens focal length to 1120mm and 1600mm, respectively.
  • The minimum focusing distance is 4.3', which pairs with a 35mm equivalent maximum magnification of 0.5x to support working with close-up subjects. This magnification level is expandable to 1x when used with the optional 2x teleconverter lens.
  • Designed in collaboration with Leica according to the company's strict quality standards, the lens has an optimally arranged structure featuring one aspherical lens, two extra-low dispersion lenses, and one ultra extra-low dispersion lens to deliver clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy throughout the entirety of the zoom range and across all edges of the photo.
  • POWER O.I.S. mechanism helps to control camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. This system is also compatible with the Dual I.S. function in select Lumix G cameras, which more effectively minimizes the appearance of camera shake by using both sensor-shift and lens-shift type stabilization methods.
  • The on-body Zoom Limit Switch allows you to quickly constrain the zooming range of the lens to allow for improved autofocus performance and prevent over- and under-magnification.
  • Newly freeze-resistant, the lens body is resilient in outdoor and harsh environments, supported by its gapless, dust- and moisture-resistant construction.
  • A rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when working with selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.
  • A quick-shift, two-part rotating tripod collar permits quick switching between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations and keeps the lens controls in the same place once rotated for more intuitive handling.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. In the overview description it talks about an optional 2X teleconverter. Which one is it?

A: Panasonic has not yet released a compatible teleconverter for the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400mm f/4-6.3 II ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens.

A: No zoom controller is compatible with the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400mm f/4-6.3 II ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens on a tripod. This is because it is not a servo-motorized zoom lens.

Q: 3. Is this a rebadged Sigma Lens or Leica made any changes?

A: The Leica Vario-Elmar-SL 100-400mm f/5-6.3 Lens (L-Mount) is manufactured by Leica and not Sigma.

Q: 4. Due to negative reviews, how does this compare with Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400mm/F4.0-6.3 ASPH./Power O.I.S.?

A: The Leica Vario-Elmar-SL 100-400mm f/5-6.3 Lens (L-Mount) is a full frame L-mount lens. The Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400mm f/4-6.3 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. The Leica 100-400mm lens was purchased to go with my new Lumix G9II. My older long range combo, a Canon 60D (later 80D) and Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary lens was getting too heavy for these elderly muscles to hold steady, and the reach of the new equipment is almost as far and weighs 2 1/2 pounds less!

You can see in the pictures the quality of the glass. Another plus is the improved auto focusing and great image stabilization combined with the G9II. In situations where the Canon/Sigma needed at least a monopod, the Lumix/Leica can be hand-held. All of the included pictures where shot hand-held and are heavily cropped, straight-from-camera jpgs.

The zoom mechanism is stiffer than my other zooms. Although you can still shake it down, it won’t creep outward on its own while being carried vertically. I really like that. The zoom ring itself only needs a quarter turn for full travel, but I prefer pushing it in and out. The focus ring is perfectly smooth and the simplicity of attaching and removing the tripod foot can’t be better.

The only thing I didn’t like is the focal length switch. It sticks up and is too easily tripped accidentally. The lens hood is a little weird, too. Otherwise I love this lens. It’s giving me some great close-ups from such a lightweight rig.

I was delighted to receive from B&H a very good copy of the Mark II version of my most used lens, the Panasonic Leica DG 100-400. It is sharp wide open and zooms smoothly. Specular highlights are pleasing as is the OOF bokeh. My well-used Mark I version of the 100-400 was getting tired and seemed not able to keep up with my DC-G9M2 for BIF. This Mark II lens works excellently on the G9M2 and on my original DC-G9, too. (From another source I previously had purchased another Mark II, and returned it because my old lens was sharper wide open at 400mm and when stopped down to f7.1.)

I took delivery on one of the first first units of this lens and returned it after writing a two-star review due to the wonky zoom and locking controls which were very clearly going to irritate me every time I used the lens. After reading several glowing reviews between November and now, I decided to try another unit, hoping that the problems had been addressed. And it turns out that they have been. I received a second unit yesterday and the build and working quality are up to Panasonic's usual standards which are worthy of at least five-stars. I've only shot a few test photos, but it looks like this lens is going to give me what I want which is a super telephoto lens on my Lumix G9 II. Thanks Lumix, and thanks to the reviewers who weighed in on their positive experiences.

I've used this lens for a week now, using it together with a recently purchased DG-9 mark ii camera. The lens has proven to be very sharp at all focal lengths and operates flawlessly. I was concerned about some comments noting a stiff zoom ring, but this must have been addressed in this version, as it operates very smoothly. So far it's been very easy to take great photos using it in conjunction with the G-9 mark ii. It's an impressively compact configuration for such a long lens. Looking forward to a lot more use!

Paired with a G9 II, this lens is the reason I picked Micro 4/3. Very compact( for the focal range), solid build quality, sharp and contrasty pictures. IBIS is excellent as well and paired with the G9 II, it's buttery smooth.

Having compared this physically against the olympus 100-400, this is quite a bit more compact and feels much lighter to hold and use.

The images I have got out of it are very sharp. Highly recommend this lens.

After testing this lens for a couple of months, I find that there are no physical issues with the lens and that it is optically sharp throughout the focal range. The build quality is consistent with other Panasonic Leica lenses. Meaning it is very well made. The zoom ring issue has been fixed in this newer version of the lens.

I've used this lens for landscape, architecture, wildlife and macro photography and the image quality is excellent. Overall, this lens when paired with a G9M2 makes for a great long distance hiking setup. You can carry this all day long and not feel it the next day.

I picked up this lens to pair with my G9II. I have another micro four thirds 100-400mm lens that I use on my E-M1 MK3 and I’ve never been pleased with the image quality or sharpness. This Panasonic lens is sharper, faster at the short end and way lighter and easier to handle. The zoom ring is buttery smooth, and the image quality noticeably better on either body. Very pleased with this lens, well done Panasonic. If you’re looking for a long lens for micro four thirds, I would suggest this over its counterpart.
