Loaded with an all-analog preamp and Class-D power amp, the Microtubes 500v2 from Darkglass Electronics is a 500W amplifier head sporting the potent Microtubes B3K Engine. Capable of delivering everything from soft and warm overdrive to massive modern distortion for a range of applications, the Microtubes 500v2 is an excellent choice for studio or stage.

Front-panel controls include active 6-band EQ, a Drive knob for controlling the distortion level, and a Blend knob for balancing clean and distorted signals. You can select between two overdrive voicings: B3K for aggressive, punchy bass, or VMT for a more neutral vintage tone with warmer mids. Further controls include compression (assignable to clean, B3K, or VMT tones), Tone for adjusting a variable low-pass filter, and switchable Active or Passive modes. I/O includes a 3-ohm speakON speaker output, a headphone output for silent practice, an aux input for playing along with or amplifying your favorite tracks, and an XLR output with three selectable cabinet emulations for DI applications.

With the dedicated push button, you can turn on or off the Microtubes Engine to add natural compression, organic harmonic enhancement, and saturation ranging from mild overdrive to high-gain bass rage. The Microtubes Engine operates before the clean section, allowing you to use the 6-band active EQ for additional tone shaping.

With special push-button switches, you can change from passive to active mode. If your bass is active it can have a hotter signal making the amp to distort early.

Using the desktop version of the Darkglass Suite allows you to select and use any of our available impulse responses from the provided library in addition to loading your own custom impulse responses. In addition, you can control the amplifier channel settings for the Super Intelligent Footswitch.

The compression knob controls the amount of dynamic compression added to the Microtubes Engine. The make up gain is adjusted automatically. The compression can be turn off or assigned using the Darkglass Suite for each mode separately (Clean, B3K, and VMT).

The Tone knob controls the high harmonic content of the Microtubes Engine via a variable low pass filter: crank it up for additional attack and definition or dim it down for a smoother sound, especially handy if already running bright clean EQ setting or cabinets with tweeters.

  • Bass: ±12 dB at 80 Hz
  • Mids control of ±12 dB at 250 and 500 Hz, as well as 1.5 and 3 kHz
  • Treble: ±12 dB at 5 kHz

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will these get hot?

A: Yes they get 500 watts hot

Q: 2. WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE BOX?

A: The Brother VC-500W Compact Color Label and Photo Printer includes: USB Cable, AC Adapter, Brother Label Roll (1" x 16.4'), Brother Cleaning Roll Cassette (2" x 6.5'), Limited 1-Year Warranty.

Q: 3. Will this work with the older model of this light?

A: The Hensel Integra Plus 500W/s Monolight with FREEMASK will work with older model lights but not for the Freemask function.

Q: 4. I want to connect four 8 ohm speakers to the S-501 and listen to them at the sametime.Am I correct in setting the impedence switch to high? Thanks.

A: No. Set the impedance switch to low. Note the instructions on the back panel.

Q: 5. What is the max power output when operated on v mount battery?

A: The GVM Pro SD500B Bi-Color LED Monolight (500W) can run on full power with V-mount batteries. The light uses two. Best is to use V mount batteries that are over 150mah. Two of them will not last much more than an hour as that light uses a lot of power.

Q: 6. does any soft box or beauty dish can go on it ?

A: If you purchase the correct speedring for your monolight strobe, then yes, you may use softboxes or beauty dishes with the Photogenic PLR500DRC Radio Solair 500W/s Monolight. As indicated under the Accessories tab, you may purchase the Photogenic Speed Ring with Back Plate for Photogenic Flash Heads, B&H # PHBPSRP, or the Photoflex SC-B9010SFR Speed Ring for Photogenic and Norman Monolights, B&H # PHSRODP. These work with most universal softboxes that require a speedring. For a beauty dish, I would recommend the dedicated Photogenic beauty dishes, or the Impact Beauty Dish Adapter for Photogenic and Norman Monolights Flash Heads, B&H # IMBDAPHO, and an Impact beauty dish.

Q: 7. I bought the recommended mogul base 500w/120V, but it doesn't fit. What bulb is supposed to go with it?

A: That's the bulb that I use. Not quite sure why yours doesn't fit. Is the bulb's base too large or too small?

Q: 8. Can this be powered with a Vmount battery or something like that?

A: The Mackie HM-4 4-Way Headphones Amplifier (B&H # MAHM4) would not be natively compatible with V-mount batteries. The combination below should work, but it has not been tested: SmallRig VB99 Pro Mini V-Mount Battery (BH # SM4292) Hawk-Woods D-Tap Male to DC 2.5mm (11.8""), B&H # HAPC12

Q: 9. does this monolight have hss?

A: Unfortunately, HSS is not available on this monolight.

Q: 10. Is there any way to remotely turn it on without having to touch the button on the ballast? Looking to use a few of these in an overhead grid.

A: The GVM Pro SD500B Bi-Color LED Monolight (500W) can work by remote in a few ways. One way is with the following wireless remote: B&H # GVMYK22 (https://bhpho.to/3z5cQYo). Next, the light supports DMX; therefore, it can be controlled by a control board and DMX cables. Another way is with Bluetooth (via an app).
