Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I can't get the m4 to turn itself off when the computer shuts down. Has anyone got this to work? Every other usb device does this.

A: The MOTU M4 has a physical on/ff switch, so if your computer is sleeping it will remain on. In order to have it shut down with your computer, you may have to adjust settings in your computer to stop power being sent to USB when shut down.

Q: 2. Does this work with the new Apple Silicon M1 chip?

A: NO. MOTU products are not yet qualified for use with the new M1-powered Macs. The M2 and M4 bus-powered USB audio interfaces are compatible with macOS Big Sur as USB audio class compliant devices, allowing plug-and-play operation with no driver installation needed. A driver will soon be available that provides lower latency performance, loopback channels and Core Audio volume control under macOS Big Sur.

Q: 3. Can you apply EQ and then listen live using loop back with no latency?

A: Yes, you can. Round trip latency is just 2.5 ms, so while it is not no latency, it is about as fast as it can get in this class of interface.

Q: 4. Does this transmit both MIDI and audio over the USB-C cable, or do you have to use the 5-pin DINs?

A: MIDI over 5 pin only. USB is audio interface only.

Q: 5. hi, is there a way to connect a digital piano with 1/4 out to midi i/o? so i can connect 3 instruments at same time: microphone, guitar and piano

A: MIDI and Audio are two different types of signals, hence are not compatible. What you could do is get a multi-channel mixer to plug into the audio inputs. The only downside is everything will be recorded to one stereo file, as opposed to individual tracks for every instrument or source.

Q: 6. Is it USB 3.0?

A: No, this would have a USB Type-C Computer Interface.

Q: 7. Can this handle a low gain sensitive mic like EV RE20..without cloud lifter ?

A: While it does have enough gain for a mic of this nature, some users have reported noise when turning up the gain, so you may want to consider a fethead or cloud lifter anyway, for the headroom.

Q: 8. Will this work with Adobe Audition on a Mac?

A: Yes, you can use the MOTU M2 USB Audio-MIDI Interface with Adobe Audition on a Mac computer.

Q: 9. is it possible to listen to a microphone plugged into the left channel through both left and right sides of my headphones, or send one mic into both channels?

A: It is possible to monitor channel one through both sides of your headphones with this interface. The Input Monitor Mix button will send a mono input to both channel outputs. As well, if monitoring from a DAW, a mono channel in the DAW will playback in both ears.

Q: 10. Is the M4 compatible with Apple's M1 Computers?

A: Not yet compatible with M1 chips.
