The WD My Book Desktop is a great external drive to use as a back-up drive. I opted for the 16TB drive to allow room for future expansion and flexibility. The drive works seamless in the background as expected and does the job as expected. 5

It serves its purpose. Please make sure you back up all of your data. It's not a fast drive or intended for work, rather for the sake of saving your data in case anything happens. 5

Standing design is only good for a cheap case (convection), bad for stability. I destroyed one of these by tipping it from standing to laying flat accidentally, while in use. How fragile is that? I managed to get a replacement after shipping it to WD operations in Vietnam (register it on the WD support website with your receipt and request RMA). If you will be carrying this drive around or it won't be in a place that it can't get knocked down flat, do yourself a favour and buy a vertical enclosure instead of the standing one. 5

I have 3 of these (14TB) running as Time Machine targets for about 2.5 years. Time Machine takes a backup once an hour, rotating through the drives. I've never had any problems. I do wish they had an activity light, though. Note: In order to be used with Time Machine, these MUST be formatted as HFS+ (NOT Fat32 or ExFat). Only takes a few minutes. 5

You can open it with bare hands and unscrew the drive with torx screws. Inside is a WD White label drive. You can put another drive in the enclosure only if you flash the firmware. Short circuit the winbond chip on pins 1 and 2 (1 marked with a dot) while powering it on to get into flash mode, there is a flash tool and firmware on the internet. You can actually edit the firmware with a hex editor and change the manufacturer, product name, ids etc, good fun. 5
