The XENYX QX1204USB gets its name from the legendary, high-headroom XENYX mic preamps, which have been praised by audio engineers all over the world. These state-of-the-art mic pres represent a major step in the evolution of audio technology, and they can easily hold their own, even when compared to the most expensive stand-alone mic preamps. XENYX preamps offer a staggering 130 dB of dynamic range, with a bandwidth that extends from below 10 Hz to well above 200 kHz.

Compression essentially limits the dynamic range of a signal, lowering the level of loud sounds and turning up softer sounds, to achieve sonic balance. But applying compression is a delicate art that many novice, and even intermediate, sound techs find challenging. Behringer's "one-knob" compression is available on all mono channels and is easy to operate, even for entry-level users. With this one knob, you can easily dial in the perfect amount of compression for instruments and vocals, creating powerful mixes with punch and clarity. This is indeed a rare feature for products in this class, but standard on the XENYX QX1204USB mixer.

The British consoles of the 1960s and '70s changed the sound of rock and roll. Without them, the British Invasion might not have happened. Those legendary mixing desks soon became the envy of engineers and producers all over the world. The channel EQ on the XENYX mixers is based on that very same circuitry, allowing you to imbue signals with incredible warmth and detailed musical character. Even when applied generously, these equalizers exhibit sweet forgiveness and superb audio quality.

There was a time when the recording process called for lots and lots of expensive gear, which meant the average musician had to buy time at a recording studio, and that time was pricey indeed. But modern technology has put personal recording well within the reach of virtually anyone with access to a computer. How do you get all that music flying around your brain into your computer? That's where the XENYX 1204USB mixer comes in. Thanks to the included bidirectional stereo USB audio interface, you can connect directly to your PC or Mac computer via a single USB cable. Now any signal source you connect to the mixer can be recorded directly to your hard drive.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this a good Mixer for the Shure SM7B? I recently bought this mic and I understand it needs a lot of Pre amp gain, at least 60+db.

A: While this can used with the SM7B, it is highly recommended to purchase a signal booster to add additional gain to the mic before the mixer. An example would be the CloudLifter B&H # CLCL1.

Q: 2. Can you adjust the volume between playback coming from your computer, and the input coming from your mic? Most audio interfaces have an input/playback knob where you can adjust and hear varying levels of the track playing on your computer, and what's coming out of your microphone.

A: Yep. Every channel is individually adjustable for volume including anything coming in from the computer or mic.

Q: 3. How stable is the USB connection? Can you use it during gigs?

A: I have not heard any complaints about stability of the connection itself. I have heard about some of the most recent Windows OS updates not being compatible with this mixer. Another small mixer with a usb connection that is known for its reliability would be B&H part # MAPROFX12V2.

Q: 4. is the main stereo mix transmitted to computer, via USB includes any applied effects?

A: Yes anything applied to the main stereo mix is going to be transmitted through the USB connection to a computer

Q: 5. Is this rack mountable?

A: Yes, and it comes with the rack mouning hardware.

Q: 6. I have an sm57 with very low output. Will this be enough to drive it? The 2i2, m-track and ur22 were not. Thanks.

A: The Yamaha MG10XU should work fine with an SM 57. Its hard to tell as I cant see how you have hooked things up and what is going on. But you should have no problem with that mixer and the 57. The first thing to check is phantom power off as that is a dynamic mic. The next thing to do is bring up the mic pre level to almost 12 oclock. Before you even touch the fader. Its the white knob that says gain. Make sure the switch is in mic and not line and the 20-dB pad is not engaged. Also make sure the main volume on the mixer is up.

Q: 7. Will this mixer power high impedance headphones such as the sennheiser hd650's ?

A: The headphone output on the Yamaha MG10XU will cater to headphones with a nominal impedance of 40 ohms. Because the HD650's are 300 ohms, the use of an external headphone amplifier will be beneficial and recommended.

Q: 8. Is this rack mountable ?

A: Yes, the Yamaha MG20XU 20-Input Mixer with Built-In FX & 2-In/2-Out USB Interface is able to be rack mounted. The rackmount kit comes in the box with purchase.

Q: 9. Can I use a dynamic and a condenser mic at the same time? Does it give individual phantom power?

A: The Yamaha Yamaha MG10XU can provide phantom power to channels 1-4 together, but phantom power cannot be toggled on/off for an individual channel. This would not pose a hazard to most dynamic microphones, although with vintage or ribbon mics you would want to be cautious.

Q: 10. This mixer records with Mac?

A: "USB Works with Windows, Mac and iOS" - from the product description
