The matte black CSR-2 Rear Rejection Shotgun Microphone from Sanken is used to capture audio in critical applications such as TV, film sound and more. This microphone features a back electret condenser with 3 capsules. It combines the long acoustic tube and rectangular capsule design of the Sanken CS-2 with the mid and low frequency side and rear rejection of the Sanken CS-3e. A switch allows you to turn off the mid and low frequency side and rear rejection capsule to obtain a wider and warmer sound image. The frequency range is 70 to 18kHz.

The CSR-2 is built with an XLR connector and is powered by +48V phantom power. Measuring about 10 inches in length and weighing 6 ounces this mic is a candidate for camera or boom pole mounting scenarios. A urethane wind screen and vinyl case is included.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can this be used with any matte box featuring a 114mm rear ?

A: We are only aware of this being compatible with Bright Tangerine Matte Boxes.

Q: 2. Hi, I just ordered this mic a couple weeks ago. So far it has not shown to turn on or record any audio, nor did I receive an instruction manual with it. I have plugged it into my canon 5d mark III and also a Zoom H5 recorder, and both have giving me no sound from the mic and some plug in noise. No levels are shown to record. I have not been able to find any troubleshooting pieces on line. Can you help me?

A: This microphone requires power you need to send it 48V

Q: 3. Will this work with the Tiffen 138mm Variable ND for Matte Boxes? (Product Number BH #TI138VNDMBM)

A: The Bright Tangerine Black Hole Mini Rubber Donut for Matte Boxes with 114mm Rear Opening (B&H# BRB12501077) is a rubber donut that is not designed to accept the insertion of any filters into it. That includes the VND filter in the Tiffen 138mm Variable ND in Matte Box-Mountable Rubber Donut for 143mm Openings (B&H# TI138VNDMBM). While it may be possible on a DIY basis to disassemble the parts and engineer a means by which to connect them, we cannot recommend nor endorse doing so. Just for the sake of clarity, the Tiffen 138mm Variable ND in Matte Box-Mountable Rubber Donut for 143mm Openings (B&H# TI138VNDMBM) includes both the rubber donut and the Tiffen ND filter within it. It is a one-piece unit that is designed as a replacement rubber donut for the rubber donut that would normally go with certain compatible matte boxes. (Please see the compatibility list at the end of the Tiffen product's Overview section.) As such, the VND incorporated into the Tifffen product is not designed to be removed and then installed in another donut such as the Bright Tangerine Black Hole Mini Rubber Donut for Matte Boxes with 114mm Rear Opening (B&H# BRB12501077).

Q: 4. I'm very fond of Sanken mics personally. Thus I wanted to ask how is the reach on this mic. Is there anything you guys could tell in that regards? I know it's not a shotgun mic, however it's Super Card.

A: It very similar to most of other shotgun mics (and it's a shotgun mic). Not as directional as Sennheiser 416, so I wouldn't recommend if you need to capture sounds outdoors very far away.

Q: 5. Can I simply attach this to a shoe mount on the FX3 and use it?

A: Yes. The CS-M1 will work with the FX3

Q: 6. Will this fit an Arri MMB-2 matte box?

A: If your MMB-2 has a 114mm opening then yes it will fit.

Q: 7. Can you use this on a lens without rails? Will it hold the misfit atom on a run and gun setup?

A: We're afraid not. Rubber Donuts are designed to block out light only when a matte box is being used on a rail system. They do not provide a secure connection.

Q: 8. Is this mic compatible to be used with a Denecke PS power supply? I'm having a problem, cause I just hear a loud hum noise and no transmitter signal. I tried it with other mics and transmitters, and I hear the same loud hum noise.

A: Yes, the Sanken CS-M1 can be used with the Denecke PS-1A or PS-2 which are both compatible 48V phantom power supplies. The Denecke PS-T is not compatible for use with the CS-M1 because it is a 12V "T-power" supply intended for use with older microphones that require lower voltage and the CS-M1 requires 48V phantom power.

Q: 9. Will this product fit a Tram TR50?

A: No it does not fit. The TR50 is rectangular and too wide. The Sanken is much narrower. It is recommended to use the Tram mic clips.

Q: 10. Does this have any latex in it?

A: Yes, the Sanken Rubber Mount for COS-11S Microphone RM-11 does contain latex.

I started out with borrowed Sennheiser shotguns, that were nice but had a destinct sweet spot that made switching between multiple sources a hassle. Then I bought a Rode ntg3 that was great but usually sounded just a bit farther away than it was. Just bought this Sanken and I have not put it down. It has the right amount of boost when aimed properly at the source without an ubnoxious sweet spot, great clarity and warmth, and the uniqe pattern on the tip gives it a natural compresion by favoring the mid frecuencies.

Thing is ridiculous. Used it for a narrative shoot next to the Great Falls in Paterson and I was extremely impressed by its rejection and reach. I've also used it for indoor dialogue. Performed flawlessly in both situations. Much better than a 416, yet cheaper than a CMIT-5 with similar performance (though it lacks that sparkle that the Schoeps has.)

I my typical work environment is usually sound mixing from indie short films to corporate shoots. I needed a decent upgrade and, dayumn, this mic was a great medium!! It captures VERY natural sound when it comes to dialogue. Picking up on sounds for field recording and ambience is a plus as well, even though it's a short shotgun it does carry across a pretty decent distance. Side and rear rejection isn't all too bad, better than what you'd get with an average under 1k mic. Nice and rugged, compact build. No disappointments here! Worth the investment, especially when you're looking to meet near other expensiv-O shotgun mic w/o your pocket hating your guts for overbearing it's limits ;)

I had one Sanken CS-2 and two Rhodes. The Sanken is so clear it does not mix well with the Rhodes so I bought a second. Best mic I have ever used. I use it as a second channel to give me redundancy.

I am completely blown away by the side / rear rejection this mic offers. I was also impressed with the reach and the very natural sound. A windscreen would have been nice, but I guess most of these will live in a blimp most of the time so it's an understandable packaging choice for Sanken. Have only used for several weeks so I can't speak to durability, but I can say I will hopefully be using this mic for years.

Went to NAB to compare mics, specifically. Listened to Sennheiser, Sanken, Shure and this was my favorite. Had for over a year, still love it.
