Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. is this capable of recording true progressive files from the c100 when selecting pf25? or is the interlaced signal an issue?

A: Not in the current firmware (2.3.1).

Q: 2. If I HDMI input on Blackmagic DesignVideo Assist HDMI/6G-SDI Recorder. Can I receive sdi out?

A: Yes, but be sure you have Mini-DIN connectors/adaptors.

Q: 3. Are any of the video codex's supported by Prem Pro CS5?

A: The Pro Res codec can be downloaded for use in CS5 from Apple.

Q: 4. recording time on a sandisk 128 sdxc card in prores hq?

A: To get the correct answer, the video resolution and frame rate also must be factored in. Since people typically shoot in 1080p24, we will go with that timing. Shooting 108024p on a 128GB U3 SD Card, ProRes 422 HQ will record 40 minutes.

Q: 5. Will a 7D HDMI output be capable of recording 422 10 bit with this monitor?

A: The Blackmagic Design Video Assist will do 10-bit 4:2:2 video up to 1080p60 to high-speed U1 SDHC/XC memory cards using industry-standard Apple ProRes (HQ, 422, LT, or Proxy) or Avid DNxHD codecs. In other words, if it gets a video signal, it will record 10-bit 4:2:2.If you have the Canon 7D Mark II, you are in luck and will be able to do what you wish. However, if you have a Canon 7D you cannot use any external recording because it does not have a clean HDMI out like the 7D Mark II and the 5D Mark III.

Q: 6. I have HDMI compatibility problems with my older Nikons and I'm assuming no issue with the D7200. Has Video Assist been tested on a D7000 and a D5100?

A: Unfortunately this monitor is not out in the wild yet for testing. Blackmagic has stated that the Video Assist HDMI/6G-SDI Recorder and 5 Monitor allows you to record from professional cameras and camcorders, as well as popular DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. Do note that the Nikon D7000 as well as the D5100 do not output a native clean HDMI signal.

Q: 7. is it compatible with Blackmagic Production camera 4k?

A: This only records 1080P or lower, NOT 4K. So, IF the production camera can output HD over it's SDI, then you can use this to record HD footage, but NOT 4K.

Q: 8. What file format does this make? MP4?

A: This records ProRes or DNxHD files.

Q: 9. Hi, so would I be able to connect my c 100 ii through hdmi and then go out to a field monitor using sdi ?

A: I was told by Blackmagic support that this recorder will not do 3:2 pulldown from 59.94i, nor will it receive record start/stop trigger over HDMI from the handgrip. Unless Canon updates firmware with selectable framerates for HDMI output, this won't work well out of the box. And unless Blackmagic adds basic firmware features like the Atomos product line has had for years, this is just a fancy field monitor that can hold an extra SD card.

Q: 10. Does this unit have the capability of Zebra &/or focus peaking?

A: At this time the statuses that have been announced for the BM Video Assist are: Transport controls, recording status, histogram, audio level, timecode, battery status, and more. No mention of zebra or focus peaking. Perhaps they are part of the design. We will find out after it's release.
