You choose what you need to hear and adjust as needed during performance. Singers, for example, need to control their own volume, but will also need to hear whatever instruments they rely on for a pitch reference. So, Input 1 might be an aux mix including only their vocal, or a mix of all vocals with their voice loudest; Input 2 could have a mix of guitar and keyboards, and Input 3 could be a mix of bass and kick drum.

If you play an instrument, you want to hear what you're playing loud and clear, so you don't wear out your fingers, and so that the subtleties of your playing matter. But you need to hear the vocals to keep you in touch with the structure (and the emotion) of the song; and you need to hear the drums, so you not only play in time, but groove well with the group.

If you're a drummer, you want to hear the drums well enough to have an accurate sense of your balance within your kit, and so you can feel the impact of your kick and snare. You need to hear the bass in order to function well as a rhythm section; you need to hear the vocals to help keep you oriented in the song structure; and you need the energy and rhythm of guitars and keyboards.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. When using ZOOM L-8 as an audio interface: can I record (in my computer) each input as a separate channel?

A: Yes. Each channel shows up in your audio software as inputs for a total of 12 (1-6 Mono, 7-8 Stereo, 9-10 Stereo & Main Mix). It also has 4 USB outputs for playback. I use mine with Logic Pro X to track instruments & vocals on the go since the board is USB bus powered.. NOTE: You will have to download drivers for Windows and MacOS.

Q: 2. hi, when using shotgun mic like MKE 600 or MKH 416 does it still need XLR cable to connect to P1 or you can just plug directly?

A: Plugging a microphone directly into an XLR input jack is never recommended. Remember that, by the principle of leverage, the force exerted on the connector will be proportional to the length of the mic. You can very quickly end up damaging the pins, or even the jack itself, and when phantom power is involved you also risk a short circuit if this happens. Always use a cable, even if it is a very short cable with low-profile connectors.

Q: 3. Can I output the audio using xlr or 1/4" trs to a speaker? I want to use this for DJ but not sure if it will work or not

A: You can connect the main outputs of this unit to active speakers, with a 1/4-inch TRS connection, with a cable such as the Pearstone PM Series 1/4" TRS Male to XLR Female Professional Interconnect Cable (15'), BH #PEPMTRSXF15. The mixer has many features aimed at people maing podcasts, but if you are planning to DJ and stream out to a computer, or to record your set on to an SD card, this would be a good option for you.

Q: 4. What is the model of compatible Kensington lock for the Zoom L8? Thanks!

A: As per Zoom Audio, the dimensions of the Kensington lock port on the back of the Zoom L8 is 9mm horizontal, 7.5mm vertical, depth is 9.5mm. In light of this, it would work just fine with a 5mm Kensington Lock.

Q: 5. Can you record to both the SD Card and the computer at the same time?

A: You can record to SD card and out to record on to a computer at the same time with this product.

Q: 6. is this device can power 12t microphone?

A: The Xvive Audio P1 Portable Phantom Power Supply with Rechargeable Battery supplies 12 or 48V of phantom power, but does not supply 12V of T power. Although phantom power will not generally damage a T-powered microphone, they use different circuitry and T-power microphones cannot be properly used with phantom power supplies. A recommended T-power product can be found in the Denecke Dcode PS-T Microphone Power Supply (BH #DEPST): https://bhpho.to/3vd9fT2

Q: 7. We have quite a few VocoPro SilentPa 900MHz recievers. Will the SilentPa receivers also work with this SilentSymphony transmitter since they both run at 900MHz or are the recievers not interchangable?

A: This is compatible with all SilentSymphony 900 MHz receivers.

Q: 8. Does this have a sound card such that you could use audio from the mixer in real time for a skype call or google meet?

A: Yes

Q: 9. Whether the output can be directly inserted into the camera Mic jack to shoot video?

A: The output of this portable phantom power pack can be connected to any mic level audio input with an XLR connector, including cameras, interfaces, and audio recorders.

Q: 10. Want to mount this to a camera cage/handle somehow; any cinch sort of harness or other creative solution, perhaps with 1/4 20 mounting screws?

A: You could use straps like the Pearstone 0.5 x 12" Touch Fastener Straps (Black, 10-Pack (B&H # PES051210B) to attach the Xvive Audio P1 Portable Phantom Power Supply. As another option to use a 1/4"-20 mounting screw, you can use the Impact Super Clamp with T-Handle (B&H # IMCC106T), which comes with an Impact Standard Stud for Super Clamp with 1/4"-20 Male Threads (B&H # IMSRP102).
