Spanning wide-angle to super telephoto, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR from Nikon is an ideal single-lens solution for photographing in a wide variety of situations. Designed for DX-format cameras, this 27-450mm equivalent zoom features an advanced optical design comprising both aspherical and extra-low dispersion glasses, which help to reduce aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range for notable clarity and sharpness. A Super Integrated Coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting when working in backlit or harsh lighting conditions. Benefitting the optics is a four stop-effective VR image stabilization system, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake in order to produce sharper handheld imagery. Additionally, a Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet autofocus performance.

All-in-one zoom spans wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths and is designed for Nikon F-mount DX-format cameras, where it provides a 27-450mm equivalent range.

Three aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.

Three extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.

A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by 4 stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.

Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this work w/ my D800? The other version was discontinued.

A: Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens works with the D800 but it is an apsc lens and the d800 is full frame, so the lens will crop the sensor of the D800. Less than half of the available megapixels will be used.

Q: 2. is this lens compatible with the Nikon 5100?

A: Yes. The D5100 is fully compatible with AF-S and G-series NIKKOR lenses.

Q: 3. Does this lens have a zoom lock? If so, at what setting?

A: Yes at 18. The lens I'd OK. I have used it almost daily for 6 months now. To me it seems to lack the sharpness of the old 18 to 200. I owned a 18-200 for 10 years and literally wore it out. I wanted more reach in the replacemen. The 300 end of the lens is good but 200 down is not as good in my opinion.

Q: 4. Is this lens compatible with the Nikon F-100?

A: No, it is not. The Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens is designed for use with Nikon DSLR cameras that use the smaller APS-C digital sensor. The Nikon F-100 35mm Film SLR camera is a film camera that uses full-frame 35mm film. Nikon DX lenses are not compatible for use with Nikon's 35mm film SLR cameras, and should not be used. The smaller imaging circle of the lens would not fully cover the larger 35mm film, and as such, there would be a large, dark circular vignette area on the negative where the smaller imaging circle on the DX lens blocks light from exposing the outer edge of your film. You also do not want to run the chance of damaging either the lens, the internal reflexing mirror, or both when attempting to use a DX lens on the 35mm film SLR camera.

Q: 5. I am shopping for an all in one lens to use in lieu of my current kit lenses (Nikkor 18-55mm and 55-200mm AF-S Dx VR) with my Nikon D5500 camera. I plan to use the lenses while traveling and expect to take a variety of shots while hiking around cities and in outdoor & mountainous terrain. which of the following lenses would be best, and why?Tamron 16-300mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD MACRO Lens for Nikon -vs-Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR -vs-Sigma 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM Contemporary Lens for Nikon F

A: Howard,Can only answer for the class of lens and the Nikon. Your reasoning is exactly why I bought the Nikon to keep the number of lenses I travel with to a minimum. The Nikon 18-300 is compact enough to air travel with. The lock is a nice touch when you are walking with it mounted to camera. It's slow for indoor and evening photography so I also take another lens with me (Sigma 18-35) which is very fast.I have been very satisfied with the clarity of the Nikon in daylight setting but I haven't printed anything larger than a 8 x 10.Good luck in your search.

Q: 6. Would this lens work with the 850D? If not, what would you suggest? I love this lens with my 7200

A: Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens is compatible with the D850 but since it is not full frame lens it will crop the sensor of the D850. Less than half of the available megapixels will be used. There isn't an option for the D850 with such a long range. I would recommend this Nikon 24-120 but the zoom is shorter. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/729948-USA/

Q: 7. Is it compatible with the Nikon D850?

A: Nikon AF-S 18-300 lens is compatible with the D850 but it will crop the sensor. Less than half of the available megapixels will be used. The angle of view will increase by 1.5x

Q: 8. will this be compatible with my d3200?

A: I believe it will, it works great with my D3300 and I love it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Q: 9. will it work on Nikon d 3500 S mount?

A: This lens is going to be compatible with the Nikon D3500.

Q: 10. How old is this lens?

A: Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens was announced in 2014.

I had the previous, heavier, version of this lens. It was a great lens but too heavy and bulky for a walk-around lens. Compared to it's predecessor, it is only slightly slower, letting in less light when fully zoomed and is missing the range finder display. According to KenRockwell.com it is just as good as the more expensive 2196 18-300mm lens without the weight. It takes very crisp photos and it about the same weight as the 18-200mm lens, thus being geared more towards it's intended purpose of being an all-in-one all-day walk around carry lens. For general use, landscape, gatherings, family, friends, events and travel, it does the job. It focuses quickly, zooms easily, has vibration reduction and is lightweight. I highly recommend this lens!

I’ve been look for a all around lens from landscaping to an extreme zoom lens but can’t afford the expensive glass that Nikon offers so I decided to try this lens out. I really didn’t want the 18-200mm zoom lens so I decided to go all in and give this extreme zoom a shot! And I find the photos that have come out with my D7200 camera plus this lens are incredible. I should’ve wasted my time purchasing other lenses but I learned my lesson and have stopped looking for better lenses for my camera this is it! The all purpose lens you’ll ever have to buy. Yes it’s heavy but it makes your camera fell expensive. Just go rent this lens and shoot everything and download the images and you can judge for yourselves. There are lens problems at 18 and 300 everything else is perfect

I purchased this lens to reduce the times I have to change lenses. It works well as a travel lens and I especially like the manual focus over-ride. The over-ride allows me to fine tune the focus in shallow depth-of-field situations.

Upgrading your lenses upgrades your Photography! If you can't afford that D850 (wish...wish) this lens will help you cut down on constant lens changes in the field. Well adapted lens for many shooting challenges. For the money, this is the best all-around lens under $1K.

This lens vs the Tamron 18-400mm to replace my older Tamron 16-300mm? Both had several reviews with good and bad points. I studied each and finally  went with the Nikon brand for my new Nikon D7500. This lens FEELS like a Nikon! Ive only had it a short time, but so far its been a great lens. I may miss the extra tele of the newer Tamron, but this lens hopefully will continue to greatly please me in its performance.

Lens has taken sharp photos. Fast focus using the 3D autofocus on my D7200. I have the NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6 for serious wildlife shots but this compact 18-300 is a great walk around lens capable of decent bird shots.

Awesome lens when you need to shoot both at short and long ranges quickly.

Paired with my D7500 it makes a great all around lens. It replaced a Sigma 18-250 - a decent lens but was a bit slower focusing than the native Nikkor lens. I also tried the Tamron 18-400 but 400mm freehand is not always friendly - and the Nikkor is lighter.
