Your reasoning is exactly why I bought the Nikon to keep the number of lenses I travel with to a minimum.The Nikon 18-300 is compact enough to air travel with. The lock is a nice touch when you are walking with it mounted to camera. It's slow for indoor and evening photography so I also take another lens with me (Sigma 18-35) which is very fast.I have been very satisfied with the clarity of the Nikon in daylight setting but I haven't printed anything larger than a 8 x 10.Good luck in your search.
