The 8TB Red Plus 5640 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD from WD is built to handle the workloads of RAID-optimized NAS systems with up to 8 drive bays, including home offices and power users, small to medium businesses, and consumer and commercial NAS systems. This 8TB drive operates using a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, a 128MB cache, and a rotational speed of 5640 rpm, which all help to ensure uninterrupted data transfers with a rate of up to 185 MB/s. This drive also features high levels of reliability, with 600,000 load/unload cycles, < 1 in 1014 non-recoverable read errors per bits read, a workload rate of 180TB per year, dual-plane balance control technology, and a 1 million hours MTBF. WD's NASware helps increase system compatibility, allowing Red Pro drives to be more easily integrated with your existing network infrastructure, while noise and vibration protection is provided by Rotation Vibration (RV) sensors.

Western Digital's exclusive NASware technology fine tunes drive parameters to match NAS system workloads, which helps increase performance and reliability.

Since your NAS system is always on, a reliable drive is essential. WD Red Plus hard drives are designed for systems that operate 24/7, giving users the confidence of knowing they can reliably access their data.

Western Digital partners with a wide range of NAS system vendors for extensive testing to ensure compatibility with most NAS enclosures.

WD Red Plus drives are engineered to use less power (versus previous models) and run cooler, which reduces operating costs and helps reduce heat in thermally challenged NAS boxes.

Despite using less power, the drives have plenty of bandwidth to handle the mixed performance demands of multi-drive NAS systems.

Hard drives that are not properly balanced may cause excessive vibration and noise in multi-drive systems, which could reduce hard drive life span and degrade the performance over time. WD's enhanced dual-plane balance control technology significantly improves balance and increases overall drive performance and reliability.

Western Digital stands behind their NAS storage solutions with the assurance of a limited 3-year limited warranty and world-class support services for hassle-free data storage.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. can i know Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) of this item?

A: This # would come from WD itself and should be marked on the HDDs. The ECCN does allow exportation to Australia.

Q: 2. Will this work with Thunder3 RAID Station from AKiTiO ?

A: Yes, the WD 4TB Red B&H # WEWD40EFR is compatible with the Akitio Thunder3 Raid Station.

Q: 3. Why is it cheaper to purchase the drives separate than to buy the bundle of 8?

A: It depends on the scenario. Sometimes, the manufacturer offers a discount on 1 drive alone (1 per customer).

Q: 4. what is the Difference between Retail and OEM?

A: OEM hardware and software are packaged for distribution to companies who build systems. OEM come in packaging units and they don't come in a retail box, that allows the price to be cheaper. They're also for customers that know how to build and install the drives without needing support. So you don't get customer support from the manufacture or technical support.

Q: 5. Is this a Cmr or Smr drive?

A: This 4TB WD hard drive would be CMR.

Q: 6. What is the spin rate (RPM?)

A: This is a 5400RPM HDD.

Q: 7. Is this the CMR drive (WD40EFRX) in the box or the SMR drive (WD40EFAX) in the box? Review here says SMR drive but based on google search of the model number listed supposed to be the CMR drive. Thanks !!!

A: This drive is SMR. The Ultrastar line are all CMR. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1463047-REG/wd_wdbbur0040bnc_wrsn_ultrastar_4tb_3_5_drive.html

Q: 8. What's the manufacturer's warranty?

A: The Western Digital 4TB Red WD40EFRX drive includes a three year WD warranty.

Q: 9. What's the difference between the Red, Red Pro, and Retail Kit drives?

A: Red vs Red Pro: Basic diff Cost, RPM, Warranty, and application. Red should be for most home NAS setups with array of drives up to 8. Red Pro is geared more to small business/rack mounts, ect. If your setting up NAS with RAID, speed and Warranty should not be a big issue. prioritize cost and size.

Q: 10. So is this a WD100EFAX drive in the box or something else? WDBMMA0100HNC-WRSN isn't listed anywhere I can find!

A: I ordered on a few days ago for my NAS and received the WD101EFAX (air filled). I was hoping for the WD100EFAX (helium filled) because I have four of those already in my RAID array and four empty slots and I wanted them all to match. I guess it doesn't matter. From what I can tell, the only real difference is it runs a few degrees hotter due to the air filled design instead of helium. WD100EFAX 36C/97F vs WD101EFAX 41C/106F.
