There is also room in for stuffing in snacks and extra layers, plus I carried a water bottle. Saying that, it is heavy packed with all that gear!

A: The main camera compartment (closest to your back) does not compress. It's about 7 inches thick (externally). The two front compartments further from your back will lay flat if nothing is in them and expand a bit if you stuff them full.
